This chapter gives an overview of four different approaches to social pathologies, which are present in contemporary critical social theory, and analyses their social-ontological commitments. The different approaches can be divided into two camps. The ‘thin sense’ of social pathology focuses on social wrongs, and the socially caused and pervasive suffering of individuals. The ‘thick sense’ of social pathology, in turn, claims that society is its own entity, or a whole, which can be ill. ‘The will to not be empowered (according to your rules)’: Resistance in Finnish participatory social policy

Participation has increasingly become a means and an end for successful and ‘empowering’ social policy. Building on previous governmentality critiques of participatory initiatives, this article investigates practices of resistance in the context of Finnish participatory social policy. I adopt a Foucauldian counter-conducts approach as my lens to study critical speech as a form of resistance in initiatives that invite marginalised people as ‘experts-by-experience’ in social welfare organisations. Tarkastelemme seuraavassa suomalaisien sosiaalityön tutkimuksen tilaaja suuntaa tehtyjen väitöskirjatutkimusten valossa. Sosiaalityön tutkimus on vakiintunut suomalaisessa yliopistollisen tutkimuksen järjestelmässä 1990-Iuvun puolivälistä, samalla kun sosiaalityön oppiala kehittyi nk. yleisestä sosiaalipolitiikasta erillisiksi ja itsenäiseksi kokonaisuudekseen. This dissertation examines the impact that the materiality of institutions has on patients and staff. Fieldwork has been carried out at five district psychiatric centres (Distriktspsykiatriske sentra, DPS) that were originally built as tuberculosis institutions. The patients’ and employees’ experiences of being present in the physical and social space of these institutions has been examined, interpreted and reflected upon. The paper provides knowledge about the significance institutions’ materiality and inner life has on the informants, and how the informants influence the materiality. Tämä pro gradu-työ käsittelee utopian kykyä tulla edelleen poliittisesti uskottavaksi kategoriaksi. Työ jakautuu neljään päälukuun. Ensimmäisessä luvussa tarkastelen utopioiden historiaa kiinnittäen erityisesti huomiota utopioiden luonteen muuttumiseen tilallisista ajallisiksi utopioiksi. Klassisten utopistien (Platon, More, Campanella, jne.) utopiat keskittyivät lähinnä tilan järjestämiseen. Luonteeltaan nämä utopiat olivatkin hyvin staattisia.
