Plasticity in Photoperiodism : Drosophila montana Females Have a Life-Long Ability to Switch From Reproduction to Diapause
2022
Photoperiodic reproductive diapause is an essential part of female life cycle in several insect species living on high latitudes, where overwintering in reproductive stage involves high risks for survival and progeny production. The sensitive period (SP), during which photoperiodic cues can trigger the switch from direct development to diapause, can last from a few hours or days after emergence to the entire life span of females. Moreover, in some species, sexually mature females can enter post-reproductive diapause as a response to decreasing day length and/or temperature. We studied the duration of SP for diapause induction and the females’ ability to enter post-reproductive diapause at s…
Force transmission and interactions between synergistic muscles
2023
The classical view of muscles as independent motors has been challenged over the past decades. An alternative view has emerged in which muscles are not isolated but embedded in a three-dimensional connective tissue network that links them to adjacent muscles and other non-muscular structures in the body. Animal studies showing that the forces measured at the distal and proximal ends of a muscle are not equal have provided undisputable evidence that these connective tissue linkages are strong enough to serve as an extra pathway for muscular force transmission. In this historical review, we first introduce the terminology and anatomy related to these pathways of muscle force transmission and …
The impact of children’s socioemotional development on parenting styles: the moderating effect of social withdrawal
2020
This study focused on associations between children’s socioemotional development (prosocial behaviour, internalizing and externalizing problems) and parenting styles (affection, behavioural control, and psychological control), and the moderating role of children’s social withdrawal (as a temperamental characteristic) in these associations. Children’s socioemotional development (n = 314) were rated by teachers at three-time points (grades 1–3). Parents completed questionnaires measuring their parenting styles at the same three-time points. The level of social withdrawal was obtained at the end of kindergarten from teachers’ reports. Panel analysis showed that prosocial behaviour was associat…

From places to platforms : Examining the transformation of servicescapes
2022
Place represents one of the underlying elements of the marketing mix. However, due to ongoing digitalisation, places have undergone substantial changes in recent years. With the transition from physical shopping environments towards intangible Internet spaces and digital platforms, how places affect consumer behaviour and how consumers use places are rapidly changing. This transition challenges the existing conceptualisation of place as a physical environment. In the online environment, consumers can no longer rely on physical and tangible cues to complement their shopping experience. Instead, they have to learn the logic of technological platforms and the rules of interaction in digital sp…

In this article, we apply critical discourse analysis and ethnography to examine conceptionsand experiences of inclusive interaction and language use in the context of eldercare in aretirement home. Our data consist of interviews with residents, nurses and managers intwo bilingual eldercare units, as well as ethnographic observations of communication andlanguage use in these units. Our analysis focuses especially on language ideologies andmetalinguistic aspects of inclusive language in the context of eldercare. On the basis of ouranalysis, we suggest that four elements are particularly central to elderly-centric language: 1)the quality, quantity and tone of interaction; 2) the practices of …
Singing is what we do (together) - redefining "together" : A comparative study
2021
This article discusses the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on singing with children in schools by providing a descriptive analysis of a comparative look at children's experiences of their singing habits and emotional well-being during the first Covid-19 lockdown. Covid-19 has established itself as (for now) an ever-present variable in our daily lives. This paper offers a descriptive analysis of a comparative study of the Covid-19 lockdown(s) influence on children's singing habits and emotional well-being in Italy, Austria, and Finland. A survey was carried out on children and young people aged 10-20 from Austria, Finland, and Italy on how the Coronavirus lockdown has impacted thei…
