Analysis of 7Be and 210Pb concentration and 7Be/210Pb activity ratio in ground level air in Palermo (Italy)

A series of measurements of particulate samples collected on paper filters in Palermo (Italy) during 1995–2005 has been performed to detect 210Pb air activity concentration and, along with previous similar data on 7Be, to evaluate their activity ratio. Average values for the daily activity concentrations of 7Be and 210Pb are found to be 4.7 and 0.6 mBq/m3 , respectively, 9.8 being the average activity ratio. Data confirm a seasonal behavior for both radionuclides. A correlation between 7Be and 210Pb air activity concentrations seems to exist, despite their different origins. Critical issues in the PD testing methodology for XLPE-insulated MV cables: An experimental case

This paper describes some critical issues arising during the partial discharge (PD) testing of a 500m delivery length of an XLPE-insulated MV cable. At first, conventional PD measurements were performed on the whole length by using a standard acquisition system; PDs activity was detected, but the system allowed the operator to localize the PDs only on a length of 70 m. A visual inspection of this section highlighted the presence of an excoriation in the outer sheet. Aiming at a more accurate pin-pointing of the defect, more measurements were carried out in the proximity of the outer defect using a portable PD detection system. Non-Linearity Extremum in Niobium Doped Potassium Tantalate

We report non-linear dielectric measurements in the KTaO 3 :Nb system (x Nb ≤ 0.05). The non-linear susceptibility diverges at low temperatures and reaches maximum values in the intermediate range (0.0075 ≤ x Nb ≤ 0.02). To account for this extremum non linearity, we propose a model of temperature dependent clusters which fits with a number of experimental reports. We also suggest that this model may be applied to the related compounds SrTiO 3 :Ca and KTaO 3 :Na.

Phase transitions in Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-(Sr0.7Bi0.2)TiO3-PbTiO3 solid solutions

ABSTRACTIncreasing of Sr0.7Bi0.2TiO3 concentration in Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-Sr0.7Bi0.2TiO3 solid solutions causes increasing of Bi/Na relation and vacancies in the A-site of perovskite structure. In temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity, such a change of composition is reflected by transforming of the frequency-dependent shoulder into a maximum characteristic for relaxor ferroelectrics and diminishing of the frequency-independent maximum characteristic for Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3. Dielectric properties of potassium–sodium niobate ceramics at low frequencies

ABSTRACTA study of the effects of ageing history on the electrical properties of lead-free ferroelectric ceramics of (K0.5Na0.5)(Nb1−xSbx)O3 + 0.5 mol% MnO2 and (K0.5Na0.5)(Nb1−xTax)O3 + 0.5 mol%MnO2 for x = 0.05 is reported. The samples after storage at a constant temperature have been subject to infra-low-frequency electric field and radiation. Differences of the photoelectric response between the two examined compounds were found and the restoration of polarisation in the aged ceramic materials by cycles of applied field is discussed.

The ${JV}$ -Characteristic of Intermediate Band Solar Cells With Overlapping Absorption Coefficients

An analytic expression for the $\textit {JV}$ -characteristic of intermediate band (IB) solar cells with overlapping absorption coefficients is derived. The characteristic contains six voltage-independent parameters that are calculated from material properties, cell properties, and external conditions. Combined with exponential functions containing the cell voltage, these describe the full $\textit {JV}$ -characteristic. Expressions are also derived for the short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage. The model represents a major simplification compared with the existing model for this type of devices. An Analytic Approach to the Modeling of Multijunction Solar Cells

Analytic expressions for the $JV$ -characteristics of three types of multijunction configurations are derived. From these, expressions for the short-circuit current, open-circuit voltage, and voltage at the maximum power point are found for multiterminal devices, and for series-connected tandem stacks. For voltage-matched devices, expressions for the optimal ratio of the number of bottom cells to the number of top cells are established. Luminescent coupling is incorporated throughout the article. Radiation hardness studies of CdTe and for the SIXS particle detector on-board the BepiColombo spacecraft

Abstract We report of the radiation hardness measurements that were performed in the developing work of a particle detector on-board ESA's forthcoming BepiColombo spacecraft. Two different high- Z semiconductor compounds, cadmium telluride (CdTe) and mercuric iodide (HgI 2 ), were irradiated with 22 MeV protons in four steps to attain the estimated total dose of 10 12 p / cm 2 for the mission time. The performance of the detectors was studied before and after every irradiation with radioactive 55 Fe source Mn K α 5.9 keV emission line. Broadband microwave emission spectrum associated with kinetic instabilities in minimum-B ECR plasmas

Plasmas of electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRISs) are prone to kinetic instabilities due to the resonant heating mechanism resulting in anisotropic electron velocity distribution. Frequently observed periodic oscillations of extracted ion beam current in the case of high plasma heating power and/or strong magnetic field have been proven to be caused by cyclotrontype instabilities leading to a notable reduction and temporal variation of highly charged ion production. Time resolved measurements of hydrogen ion energy distributions in a pulsed 2.45 GHz microwave plasma

A plasma diagnostic study of the Ion Energy Distribution Functions (IEDFs) of H+, H+2H2+, and H+3H3+ ions in a 2.45 GHz hydrogen plasma reactor called TIPS is presented. The measurements are conducted by using a Plasma Ion Mass Spectrometer with an energy sector and a quadrupole detector from HIDEN Analytical Limited in order to select an ion species and to measure its energy distribution. The reactor is operated in the pulsed mode at 100 Hz with a duty cycle of 10% (1 ms pulse width). The IEDFs of H+, H+2H2+, and H+3H3+ are obtained each 5 μs with 1 μs time resolution throughout the entire pulse.
