Novel Penicillin-Type Analogues Bearing a Variable Substituted 2-Azetidinone Ring at Position 6: Synthesis and Biological Evaluation

2015

The synthesis and the biological activity of novel semi-synthetic β-lactam compounds containing an azetidinone moiety joined to the amino-nitrogen of the (+)-6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) as new antibacterial agents is reported. The synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against a panel of Gram positive and Gram negative pathogens and environmental bacteria. Tested compounds displayed good antimicrobial activity against all tested Gram positive bacteria and for Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis antimicrobial activity resulted higher than that of the reference antibiotic. Additionally, in vitro cytotoxic screening was also carried …

Competitive inhibition of three novel bacteria isolated from faeces of breast milk-fed infants against selected enteropathogens.

2013

Numerousin vitroandin vivostudies conducted using different probiotic micro-organisms have demonstrated their ability to interfere with the growth and virulence of a variety of enteropathogens. The reported beneficial effects of the use of probiotics to complement antibiotic therapy or prevent diarrhoea or gastrointestinal infection in infants have increased in recent years. In the present study, we demonstrated the capacity of supernatants obtained from three novel probiotics (Lactobacillus paracaseiCNCM I-4034,Bifidobacterium breveCNCM I-4035 andLactobacillus rhamnosusCNCM I-4036) isolated from the faeces of breastfed infants to inhibit the growth of enterotoxigenic and enteropathogenic (…

Drug resistances in salmonella isolates from animal foods, Italy 1998–2000

2002

We investigated the distribution of serotypes and patterns of drug resistance of 206 strains of salmonella isolated in southern Italy in the years 1998–2000 from raw food of animal origin, faeces of food animals and animal feed. To improve knowledge of mobile genetic elements carrying the resistance genes, some molecular features were also investigated within isolates resistant to three or more antibiotics. A high proportion of isolates, 52.2% and 37.7%, respectively, belonging to both Typhimurium and other serotypes of animal origin, proved to be multidrug resistant. The DT104 complex specific multidrug pattern of resistance was quite infrequent among isolates other than Typhimurium, but r…

Chemical Composition and in Vitro Antimicrobial and Mutagenic Activities of Seven Lamiaceae Essential Oils

2009

Deeper knowledge of the potentiality of aromatic plants can provide results of economic importance for food and pharmacological industry. The essential oils of seven Lamiaceae species were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and assayed for their antibacterial, antifungal and mutagenic activities. Monoterpenes in the oils ranged between 82.47% (hyssop oil) and 97.48% (thyme oil), being mainly represented by oxygenated compounds. The antibacterial activity was evaluated against six pathogenic and five non-pathogenic bacterial strains. Oregano and thyme oils showed the strongest antibacterial activity against the pathogenic ones. The antifungal activity was evaluated against six …

Inhibition of foodborne pathogen bacteria by essential oils extracted from citrus fruits cultivated in Sicily

2012

Abstract The antagonistic activity of the essential oils (EOs) extracted by hydrodistillation from the fruit peel of several citrus genotypes (pummelo, grapefruit, orange, kumquat, mandarin and lemon) was evaluated against foodborne pathogen bacteria (43 strains of Listeria monocytogenes , 35 strains of Staphylococcus aureus and 14 strains of Salmonella enterica ). Five commercial EOs were used for comparison. Most of the EOs were more effective against the Gram-positive bacteria rather than Salmonella . EOs of lemon genotypes 14 and 15 showed the best results in terms of number of strains inhibited and width of the inhibition zone. The most susceptible strain of each species ( L. monocytog…

Evaluation of silver-infused polylactide films for inactivation of Salmonella and feline calicivirus in vitro and on fresh-cut vegetables

2012

There is a growing trend to develop packaging materials with an active role in guarantying that the quality and safety characteristics of packaged products will remain or improve from preparation throughout shelf-life. In the present study, 0.001-1.0 wt.% silver ions were satisfactorily incorporated into polylactide (PLA) films by a solvent casting technique. Silver migration from the films was measured by voltamperometry and then correlated with its antimicrobial efficacy against Salmonella enterica and feline calicivirus (FCV), a human norovirus surrogate, by using the Japanese industrial standard (JIS Z 2801). The PLA-silver films showed strong antibacterial and antiviral activity in vit…

This article offers an interpretation of the possible meanings present in the ancient altar-piece or reredos of Saint James the Apostle in Algemesí [province of Valen…

Antibacterial and antitumoral activities of new organotin(IV)-Schiff bases derivatives

2018

This preliminary report shows eight complexes of triorganotin(IV): Ph3SnOH and (CH3)3SnOH with four chelating imines on new synthesis. Of these ligands, two are salen-like (four coordination sites, two imidic, two phenoxidic) [1], one is a tetradentate pyrrole derivative [2] while the fourth, a vita- min B6 derivative, is pentadentate [3]. Ligands have been characterized by means of FT-IR, UV-Vis, Fluorescence, 1H- and 13C-NMR, LC-MS ESI triple quadrupole; complexes by means FT-IR, 1H- and 119Sn-NMR, LC-MS ESI, using the isotopic distribution pattern as a discriminant [4]. Geometry and nature of coordination complexes have been also evaluated using the 119Sn chemical shifts. Solid-state syn…
