NANOCOATING ANTIBATTERICI PER L’INCLUSIONE SOCIALE DEI NON VEDENTI IN AMBITO MUSEALE

2021

The research and experimentation activity has been carried on in the frame of the Master for Expert on Nanotechnology for Cultural Heritage, held at the University of Palermo, year 2020-2021. The project aims to verify the performance over time and the bio-receptivity of the antibacterial treatments developed by the company SenseFulDesign srl, a Sicilian start-up, which produces tactile maps and reproductions of monuments with antibacterial properties, in order to promote the social inclusion of the blind. This experimentation involved the multi-parametric evaluation of two different antibacterial nanocoating, which were applied on three different types of substrates used for the realizatio…

Biological characteristics of three Brachyuran crab species in the Lagoon of Elbibane, South-Eastern Tunisia

2016

This study is a first contribution to the knowledge of the biology of three crab species, Carcinus aestuarii, Eriphia verrucosa and Pachygrapsus marmoratus, occurring in the intertidal zone of Elbibane lagoon, south-eastern Tunisia. A total of 1264 individuals from the three brachyuran species were collected monthly from April 2010 until March 2011 and their reproduction and growth parameters were determined. The seasonal distribution of carapace width showed for the three species that males have always a greater size than females. The length-weight relationship showed in the three species a negative allometry in males, and in non-ovigerous females. The von Bertalanffy growth model (VBGF) p…

Food partitioning between Serranus scriba and Scorpaena porcus (Perciformes) on the infralittoral ground of the South Tyrrhenian Sea.

1993

Food preferences of Scorpaena porcus and Serranus scriba were investigated from the stomach contents of fish caught with trammel nets in the Gulf of Palermo (Tyrrhenian Sea). Decapoda Natantia and Decapoda Brachyura were the main preferred prey in the diet of S. porcus whereas Decapoda Natantia, Decapoda Galatheidae and Pisces were the preferred prey for S. scriba. These results and the values of the index of overlapping alimentary requirements suggested competition for food resources between the two species. A more precise investigation, at species level, of the food remains of the most abundant taxon (Crustacea Decapoda) made it possible to demonstrate that the trophic niche overlap betwe…

Intrinsic bioremediation potential of a chronically polluted marine coastal area.

2015

A microbiological survey of the Priolo Bay (eastern coast of Sicily, Ionian Sea), a chronically polluted marine coastal area, was carried out in order to discern its intrinsic bioremediation potential. Microbiological analysis, 16S rDNA-based DGGE fingerprinting and PLFAs analysis were performed on seawater and sediment samples from six stations on two transects. Higher diversity and variability among stations was detected by DGGE in sediment than in water samples although seawater revealed higher diversity of culturable hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. The most polluted sediment hosted higher total bacterial diversity and higher abundance and diversity of culturable HC degraders. Alkane- an…

BIODEGRADAZIONE DEGLI IDROCARBURI: DALLE COMUNITÀ MICROBICHE MARINE AI SISTEMI READY TO USE PER IL BIORISANAMENTO

Crude oil is one of the major hazardous pollutants. A promising technology for the treatment of contaminated sites is based on biodegradation of oil pollutants by microbial populations. Several microorganisms are known to use hydrocarbons as carbon sources. In the marine environment, obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (BIC) have been defined as being ecologically important for the aerobic removal of hydrocarbons. Recent advances in microbial ecology make it possible to combine molecular and culture-dependent approaches to identify bacterial community at environmental sites. In this thesis a microbiological survey of the Priolo Bay (eastern coast of Sicily, Ionian Sea), a chronically poll…

ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS OF LINEZOLID THROUGH CATALYZED HENRY REACTION

2013

Linezolid 1 is an antibacterial oxazolidinone approved by FDA in 2000 for the treatment of fastidious bacterial infections.1 The asymmetric synthesis of Linezolid-like molecules make use of the chiral pool approach, through the so-called Manninen reaction.2 This strategy requires the use of BuLi, low temperature and a long elaboration of the acetamide chain. Curiously, the only catalyzed approach toward the asymmetrical synthesis of Linezolid was just recently reported, and belongs to the use of proline-derived catalysts in aldol reactions as the key step.3 This procedure is quite interesting except for the low yield. Here we report a new synthesis of Linezolid, based on a Cu(II)-catalyzed …

Essential oil composition and antibacterial activity of Anthemis mixta L. and Anthemis tomentosa L. (Asteraceae)

2012

In the present study the chemical composition of the essential oils from aerial parts and roots of Anthemis mixta L. and A. tomentosa L. was evaluated by GC and GC-MS, and their antibacterial activity tested against ten bacterial species. Hexadecanoic acid (15.2%) was recognized as the main constituent of A. mixta, together with τ-cadinol (6.7%), while in both aerial parts and roots of A. tomentosa nonacosane (21.9% and 20.7%), heptacosane (8.1% and 6.0%), hexadecanoic acid (8.1% and 27.1%) and hexahydrofarnesylacetone (6.8% and 5.5%) prevailed. The oils from aerial parts of both species showed a good activity against Gram-positive bacteria. These results suggest that the plants could be po…

Metodo per la preparazione di nanocompositi antibatterici

2019
