Altered processing of sensory stimuli in patients with migraine.

Migraine is a cyclic disorder, in which functional and morphological brain changes fluctuate over time, culminating periodically in an attack. In the migrainous brain, temporal processing of external stimuli and sequential recruitment of neuronal networks are often dysfunctional. These changes reflect complex CNS dysfunction patterns. Assessment of multimodal evoked potentials and nociceptive reflex responses can reveal altered patterns of the brain's electrophysiological activity, thereby aiding our understanding of the pathophysiology of migraine. The Achilles tendon (AT) is the strongest tendon in humans, yet it often suffers from injury. The mechanical properties of the AT afford efficient movement, power amplification and power attenuation during locomotor tasks. The properties and the unique structure of the AT as a common tendon for three muscles have been studied frequently in humans using in vivo methods since 1990's. The Patellofemoral Arthroplasty: The Great Solution, the Great Problem

Unfortunately, many orthopedic surgeons believe that the definite solution for eliminating anterior knee pain in a young patient with multiple operations is the patellofemoral prosthesis (“The Great Solution”). But, they fail to ask themselves the most important question; what is causing the pain? When a patellofemoral prosthesis is implanted in these young patients without finding out the cause of the pain, a more serious problem could be created with a worse solution (“The Great Problem”). The cases we present spotlight this abuse.

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF BOUTONNEUSE FEVER IN WESTERN SICILY

The distribution and prevalence of spotted fever group rickettsial infection in the ixodid dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus were found to occur at a rate of 19.7% with variation related to geographic and sociooccupational factors. A higher rate of infection was demonstrated in ticks removed from dogs associated with documented cases of boutonneuse fever. The results fit into available clinical and seroepidemiologic data on Rickettsia conorii infection in western Sicily.

Autumn herbicides, an efficient chemical tool against ergot of grasses

Maktheshim Agan France analyzed 14 weeding trials, carried out in 2011-2012, to identify the indirect effect of weeding on the development of ergot. Field trials were set up on straw cereals (rye, wheat and triticale), with a contamination of ergot sclerotia and artificial infestation of grassy weeds susceptible to sulfonylureas. Two herbicides: isoproturon and chlortoluron, used alone or followed by a sulfonylurea, were compared to untreated control. All the assessments show that herbicides decreased the amount of sclerotia and even more the alkaloid content in harvest.
