Honour, Masculinity and Corporality in the Officer Corps of Early Eighteenth-Century Sweden

2010

Military honour and physical commitment to serve king and fatherland played a central role in the ideals of the army of Charles XII of Sweden. These ideals were formed within a culture in which the role of the warrior, dictated by a code of honour, was constantly challenged. My main empirical primary sources consist of the archivale records of the Swedish Diet, which included Placement Committee records from the Diet of 1723. An honourable man had the right to a livelihood and a respectable position in society. My aim is to show that, in order to obtain such a position, a military man had to present himself as someone who had offered his body in the service of his king and country. An appea…

Classical and humanist works in the libraries of early modern Finland between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries

2009

This article examines the presence of classical, humanist and neo-humanist works in the libraries of the Magnus Ducatus of Finland between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. In this period, Sweden went from being a member of a Scandinavian union dominated by Denmark to an imperial power administering large areas of north-central Europe, only to be subsequently demoted to the role of a regional player increasingly tossed about by her neighbours, especially Russia. Despite economic, political, religious and cultural turbulence, international trends seem to have reached the Magnus Ducatus Finlandiae, both through Finns studying at key centres of learning and culture, and through reading b…

Translating the Classics into the vernacular in sixteenth-century Italy

2015

Whilst early- and mid-fifteenth-century Italian humanism had concentrated on ambitious new translations from Greek into Latin, rather neglecting the vernacular, the sixteenth century is characterized by a proliferation of vernacular works in all fields and, especially from the 1530s on, intense activity in translating classical works into Italian. This article discusses some material features of the original and translated publications under consideration, but especially explores linguistic choices and translation techniques used by three translators in a variety of classical texts: Antonio Brucioli (1487–1566), who translated among other things the texts discussed here, the Rhetorica ad He…

Generic revision of Cypricercinae McKenzie, 1971 (Crustacea, Ostracoda), with the description of three new genera and one new species and a phylogene…

2009

The Cypricercinae are one of the most speciose subfamilies of non-marine ostracods, with more than 170 described species, mostly from the tropics. Although the identity of the subfamily as such is clear, because of the presence of unifying characters such as the Triebel’s loop in the attachment of the caudal ramus, the supra-specific taxonomy of this group has long been confused because of lack of good generic and tribal characters. Here, the generic characters of the Cypricercinae are revised. Eleven genera are retained in this subfamily, including three new genera: Bradleytriebella n. gen., Nealecypris n. gen. and Pseudostrandesia n. gen. Tanycypris siamensis n. sp. is described from Thai…

Molecular analysis of the dominant lactic acid bacteria of chickpea liquid starters and doughs and propagation of chickpea sourdoughs with selected W…

2020

Abstract Fermented chickpea liquid is used as a leavening agent in chickpea bread production. In the present study, traditional chickpea liquid starter and dough samples were collected from bakeries in Turkey and microbiologically investigated. Culture-independent analysis for microbiota diversity, performed by MiSeq Illumina, identified Clostridium perfringens as major group in all samples, while Weissella spp. Dominated LAB community. A culture-dependent methodology was applied and 141 isolates were confirmed to be members of the LAB group based on 16s rRNA gene sequence analysis. In particular, 11 different LAB species were identified confirming the high frequency of isolation of weissel…
