Limbal stem cells as a potential source of pancreatic beta cells
2009
BACKGROUND/RATIONAL Beta cell replacement therapy represents an alternative approach to conventional insulin regimen for the management of type 1 diabetes. Stem cells theoretically represent a suitable and renewable source of surrogate beta cells. Recently, it has been demonstrated that corneal epithelium contains stem cells in the basal layer of the limbus. Our aim was to isolate and characterize limbal stem cells (LSCs) from adult corneal-limbal biopsies, and to assess their capability to differentiate into insulin-producing cells. METHODS 2-3 mm2 biopsies were obtained from limbus and central cornea of four patients undergoing surgery for ocular diseases not involving conjuctive or corne…

A polynomial algorithm solving a special class of hybrid optimal control problems
2006
Hybrid optimal control problems are, in general, difficult to solve. A current research goal is to isolate those problems that lead to tractable solutions [5]. In this paper, we identify a special class of hybrid optimal control problems which are easy to solve. We do this by using a paradigm borrowed from the Operations Research field. As main result, we present a solution algorithm that converges to the exact solution in polynomial time. Our approach consists in approximating the hybrid optimal control problem via an integer-linear programming reformulation. The integer-linear programming problem is a Set-covering one with a totally unimodular constraint matrix and therefore solving the S…
A robust calibration methodology for an On-Board Diagnostic car system
2006
New car models are now by law equipped with on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems aimed at monitoring the state of health of strategic components that ensure low levels of polluting exhaust emissions. During development phases, for each new car model, the OBD system must be finely calibrated. This article presents a robust calibration methodology taking into account sources of variability mainly due to production process, operating, and environmental conditions. The methodology enables us to evaluate the false alarm and failure to detect risks intrinsically related to the adopted calibration. An application concerning an upstream oxygen sensor monitored by the OBD is presented.
Guarding, guiding, gate opening: Prison officer work in a Norwegian welfare context
2017
Anne A is a prison officer, and for years, she has been working behind the walls—in low-security and high-security wings, with remand and sentenced prisoners. She says: We are there fifty per cent in order to keep an eye on them, to ensure that they stay here [in prison]. The other fifty per cent we are trying to help them. They may be drug users or have other problems, and it’s just as much our duty to help them as to watch them. And when we help, this contributes to security just as much as a locked door or an alarm.
Decentralized Synchronization for Zigbee wireless sensor networks in Multi-Hop Topology
2010
Abstract The most effective solution for energy saving in low-rate wireless sensor networks is maintaining each node in a doze state as long as possible. In order to guarantee network connectivity, the intervals at which the network sensors are turned on and off have to be coordinated. We analyze the Zigbee MAC performance in sensor networks deployed in multi-hop topologies. For this networks, critical inefficiencies can arise due to transmissions performed by hidden nodes. We evaluate the impact of different synchronization schemes on the network performance, both in terms of network capacity and in terms of energy consumption. We show how the synchronization function can be opportunistica…
Ūdeņraža mikrobioloģiska producēšana, izmantojot Enterobacter aerogenes, un uzkrāšana AB5 tipa sakausējumā
2017
Nosakot LaNi…
Women as Key Agents in Sustainable Entrepreneurship: A Gender Multigroup Analysis of the SEO-Performance Relationship

Literature points out that the effect of sustainable entrepreneurship on firm performance may be contingent on internal factors, such as top manager characteristics. This paper proposes that the gender of a firm&rsquo
CEO gender and SMEs innovativeness: evidence for Spanish businesses
2021
AbstractThis paper analyses the role of gender of the chief executive officer (CEO) on the propensity to introduce innovations using a sample of 1405 Spanish small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). We examine whether there are significant differences between female- and male-led businesses in terms of their propensity to innovate, and whether these differences may be explained by factors related to the attributes of the CEO concerning risk tolerance, self-confidence, education level and cooperative behaviour. In particular, this study tests if the linkages between these managerial attributes and the propensity to innovate are influenced by the gender of the CEO. Using a multivariate pro…
