Crítica de la economía biopolítica : dimensiones políticas del pensamiento médico / Criticism of the biopolitical Economics: political dimensions of …

2017

Textual and pictorial components in the focus: paratext in translated graphic novels

2018

Summary In spite of manifold textual-pictorial make-up and remarkably varied meaning making function, paratext is one of the neglected research topics around graphic novels (graphic narrative in general). Even more so, this goes for translated graphic novels. Distinguishing between carrier media of paratext (front and back covers, blurbs) and forms of information (introduction, imprint, appendix), this study starts from describing most characteristic components of graphic novels’ paratext. Different from many articles on graphic narrative, this contribution is not only based on English, French and German, but also on Slavic (Czech, Polish, Serbian) source and target texts. All source texts …

Henrik Wergeland's Bouquet: Fredrika Bremer, Sentimentality and Nationalism inJan van Huysum's Flower Piece

2015

Henrik Wergeland's poem Jan van Huysums Blomsterstykke (1840) is often characterized as a key work of Norwegian and Nordic romanticism. Where previous criticism has primarily focused on the poem's ekphrastic dimension, this reading will draw attention to how it employs many forms and genres, at the same time examining neglected thematic strands in the poem. A key lead to the poem's generic placement is provided by its oft-overlooked front-page, paratextual dedication to the Swedish novelist Fredrika Bremer. It will be argued that works by Bremer, such as Hemmet, not only provide some precedent for the ekphrastic dimension of Wergeland's poem, but more importantly reveal the latter text's un…

Autobiographical Ecocritical Practices and Academic Environmental Life Writing: John Elder, Ian Marshall, and Catriona Mortimer-Sandilands

2011

As ecocriticism emerged as a distinct discourse in literary and cultural studies in North America and in Great Britain in the late 1980s and early 1990s, many scholars working in this burgeoning field were compelled to reconsider the viability of contemporary critical and theoretical frameworks and tried to establish new analytical paradigms that would be appropriate for ‘the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment’ (Glotfelty xviii). In a 1994 proposal for the future direction of the increasingly interdisciplinary and institutionalized field, influential first-generation ecocritic Scott Slovic urged his peers to practice narrative scholarship, that is, to …
