Cognitive effects of labeled addictolytic medications
2017
Abstract Introduction Alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drug usage is pervasive throughout the world, and abuse of these substances is a major contributor to the global disease burden. Many pharmacotherapies have been developed over the last 50 years to target addictive disorders. While the efficacy of these pharmacotherapies is largely recognized, their cognitive impact is less known. However, all substance abuse disorders are known to promote cognitive disorders like executive dysfunction and memory impairment. These impairments are critical for the maintenance of addictive behaviors and impede cognitive behavioral therapies that are regularly administered in association with pharmacotherapie…
Opioid tolerance and dependence -- do they matter?
2004
The use of opioids has long been accepted as the standard of care in patients with cancer and acute pain. Opioids can further be used effectively in specific subgroups of patients with chronic nonmalignant pain states. While the development of tolerance and physical dependence are known effects of opioids in cancer and noncancer pain populations, these patients can not be regarded as addicted. However, long-term therapy with short-acting opioids predisposes to tolerance and addiction. Recent research has confirmed the important role of psychopathologic and psychosocial conditions as predictors of failed opioid effectiveness in a significant number of noncancer pain subgroups. The clinical p…
Effect of drugs of abuse on social behaviour: a review of animal models.
2015
Social behaviour is disturbed in many substance abuse and psychiatric disorders. Given the consensus that social behaviours of lower mammals may help to understand some human emotional reactions, the aim of the present work was to provide an up-to-date review of studies on the changes in social behaviour induced by drugs of abuse. Various animal models have been used to study the relationship between drugs of abuse and social behaviour. Herein, we describe the effects of different substances of abuse on the three most commonly used animal models of social behaviour: the social play test, the social interaction test and the resident-intruder paradigm. The first is the most widely used test t…
Patterns of sympathetic responses induced by different stress tasks.
2008
Stress tasks are used to induce sympathetic nervous system (SNS) arousal. However, the efficacy and the patterns of SNS activation have not been systematically compared between different tasks. Therefore, we analyzed SNS activation during the following stress tasks: Presentation of negative, positive, and – as a control – neutral affective pictures, Color-Word interference test (CWT), mental arithmetic under time limit, singing a song aloud, and giving a spontaneous talk. We examined 11 healthy subjects and recorded the following SNS parameters: Activation of emotional sweating by quantitative sudometry, skin vasoconstriction by laser-Doppler flowmetry, heart rate by ECG, blood pressure by …

Late Breaking Abstract - Efficacy of CSJ117 on allergen-induced asthmatic responses in mild atopic asthma patients
2020
Introduction: CSJ117 is a potent neutralizing antibody fragment against human Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), formulated as a PulmoSol™ engineered powder in hard capsules for delivery to the lungs via dry powder inhaler. Methods: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 28 mild, atopic asthmatics meeting elibility criteria were randomized to receive 4mg CSJ117 (n = 15) or placebo (n = 13) inhaled daily for 12 weeks. Allergen inhalation challenge (AIC) was conducted at screening, day 42 and day 84. The primary efficacy variable was the late asthmatic response (LAR), measured 3 to 7 hours after AIC at day 84. Other outcomes included the early asthmatic response (EAR) measured with…
Long-term outcome after urinary diversion using the ileocecal segment in children and adolescents: Complications of the efferent segment.
2016
Long-term outcomes are of special concern in children after urinary diversion. In a single institution study we evaluated retrospectively the long-term outcomes of urinary diversion in children, in whom the ileocecal segment had been used, in respect to complications of the efferent segment. The Mainz pouch was used in 107 children for continent urinary diversion. Indications were neurogenic bladder (53%, 57/107), exstrophy-epispadias complex (25%, 27/107), malignancy (13%, 14/107), and others (9%, 9/107). Continent cutaneous diversion was performed in 95 patients, and 12 patients received bladder augmentation/substitution with a continent cutaneous stoma. As efferent segment, we used the in…
Prospective comparison of CT angiography of the legs with intraarterial digital subtraction angiography.
1996
The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of CT angiography (CTA) with a single spiral acquisition for the diagnosis of arterial stenoses and occlusion in patients with peripheral vascular occlusive disease. In a prospective study, intraarterial digital subtraction angiography and i.v. CTA from the groin to the lower calves were performed on 50 patients with vascular occlusive disease. Maximum-intensity-projection images in multiple views were produced. The accuracy of CTA with and without analysis of the axial scans was determined with digital subtraction angiography as the standard. The sensitivities of CTA were 100% for the diagnosis of femoral artery occlusion, 100% for the dete…
Effect of CYP1A1 Gene Polymorphisms on Estrogen Metabolism and Bone Density
2004
UNLABELLED: In this study, we evaluated the effect of polymorphisms of the CYP1A1 gene, linked to hormone-related cancers, on estrogen metabolism and BMD. We found that variants carrying the A allele (CA and AA) for the C4887A polymorphism have a significantly higher degree of estrogen catabolism and lower femoral BMD. INTRODUCTION: Polymorphisms of the CYP1A1 gene, one of the key enzymes that metabolize estrogen, have been linked with hormone-related cancers. We investigated the impact of these polymorphisms on estrogen metabolism and BMD, which is another hormone-dependent health issue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred seventy postmenopausal women (mean age, 63.5 +/- 0.6 years) particip…
