Attitudes : Tendencies and Variations
2018
This chapter presents an overview of religiosity and attitudes to religious diversity in media and other public spaces based on a cross-Scandinavian survey conducted in 2015. Although Scandinavians in general have a weak personal connection to religion, Christianity still holds a privileged position as an expression of cultural identity. Scandinavians express support for equal rights to practice religion, but also doubtfulness towards public expressions of religion. More than one-fourth of respondents discuss news about religion and religious extremism regularly. There is a widespread sentiment that Islam is a threat to the national culture, even though most respondents state that they oppo…
Transformative direction of innovation and measurement of uncaptured GDP in the digital economy
2017
The Internet has dramatically changed business dynamics and our daily lives by providing extraordinary services and welfare never anticipated before. However, productivity in industrialized countries has confronted an apparent decline. The ICT advanced firms and countries are suffering with low marginal productivity of their ICT investments. This reveals the two-faced nature of ICT and productivity paradox in the digital economy. With the progression of technology and transition from commodity- oriented to information society, the consumers’ preferences are believed to be shifted beyond economic value. The digitization has promoted the free and un- monetized consumption of digital goods and…
Domain Specific Case Tool for ICT-Enabled Service Design
2014
One major problem in service design is the limited availability of information gathered during the development process. In particular, information on end-user requirements is difficult for designers, developers, and maintainers to access. Here, we provide a mechanism that supports the gathering and modeling of various types of information throughout the service and software development life cycle. As various existing tools focus on a particular part of the life cycle, essential information is not available, or it is more difficult to obtain in later stages. The linkage between information collected in the different stages is often lost. The implemented tool support enables the modeling of r…
Intergenerational fitness effects of the early life environment in a wild rodent
2019
The early life environment can have profound, long‐lasting effects on an individual's fitness. For example, early life quality might (a) positively associate with fitness (a silver spoon effect), (b) stimulate a predictive adaptive response (by adjusting the phenotype to the quality of the environment to maximize fitness) or (c) be obscured by subsequent plasticity. Potentially, the effects of the early life environment can persist beyond one generation, though the intergenerational plasticity on fitness traits of a subsequent generation is unclear. To study both intra‐ and intergenerational effects of the early life environment, we exposed a first generation of bank voles to two early life…
Early life of fathers affects offspring fitness in a wild rodent
2019
Intergenerational fitness effects on offspring due to the early life of the parent are well studied from the standpoint of the maternal environment, but intergenerational effects owing to the paternal early life environment are often overlooked. Nonetheless, recent laboratory studies in mammals and ecologically relevant studies in invertebrates predict that paternal effects can have a major impact on the offspring's phenotype. These non‐genetic, environment‐dependent paternal effects provide a mechanism for fathers to transmit environmental information to their offspring, and could allow rapid adaptation. We used the bank vole Myodes glareolus, a wild rodent species with no paternal care, t…

Specialised English Lexicography. A Contrastive Analysis of two Monolingual Medical Dictionaries
2020
Today information tends to be increasingly specialised. Moreover, English is the language of most scientific literature worldwide. Within this framework, English dictionaries are very important reference tools which help improve exchange among members of a given professional community. Of the different specialised languages, the medical one perhaps undergoes the fastest changes parallel to the continuous and rapid advances in medical sciences. However, research on medical lexicography seems to lack studies on monolingual medical dictionaries – especially from a comparative synchronic and diachronic point of view. This paper intends to offer a contrastive analysis of some features of two of …
