In vitro models of blood-brain barrier set by co-culturing primary pericytes, astrocytes and brain capillary endothelial cells
2010
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is formed by brain capillary endothelial cells (BCECs) under the effects of the brain microenvironment. BCECs are sealed together by tight junctions (TJs) [2]. We previously found that occludin, one of the main TJ components, is correctly localized at the cell periphery only if BCECs are co-cultured with neurons/astrocytes [1-2]. Moreover, pericytes induce PLA2 protein expression through activation of PKCalpha and the MAPK/ERK cascade in immortalized GP8.3 endothelial cells [3]. In the present work, we analyzed the effects of pericytes and/or astrocytes on survival and differentiation of primary endothelial cells, in the presence of a serum-free medium. To test…

INTRACRANICAL HEMANGIOPERICYTOMA: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF LITERATURE
2013
PURPOSE: We present a case of intracranical hemangiopericytoma (HPC) in a patient with migraine (male, 49 years old), who also presented mental confusion and partial left sensorimotor syndrome. We will also provide some elements regarding the international classification of this rare and highly vascularized mesenchymal tumor, and will consider possible differential diagnosis with other more common extra-axial masses. METHODS: After a preliminary examination in ER, patient underwent to head CT examination and was then transferred to the neurosurgical unit. The day after a brain MR examination was performed using advanced techniques too (PWI, and MRS); before surgery also functional MR imagin…
Relationship between authors’ keywords in journal papers and indexing terms in databases ISOC, IME and ICYT
2005
The keywords provided by authors in their scientific articles and the descriptors assigned to those articles in various databases are analysed to find out the role played by these keywords during the indexing process. In order to do that, 108 periodical publications proportionally distributed between Social Sciences and Humanities (36 journals), Science and Technology (36) and Medical and Health Sciences (36) were selected. Ten articles were selected from each of the 108 journals from different years, so that we worked altogether on 1080 articles meeting two conditions: including keywords and being indexed in the databases ISOC, ICYT or IME. Then, we proceeded to draw a comparison between t…
Developmental and tumoral vascularization is regulated by G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2
2012
Tumor vessel dysfunction is a pivotal event in cancer progression. Using an in vivo neovascularization model, we identified G protein–coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) as a key angiogenesis regulator. An impaired angiogenic response involving immature vessels was observed in mice hemizygous for Grk2 or in animals with endothelium-specific Grk2 silencing. ECs isolated from these animals displayed intrinsic alterations in migration, TGF-β signaling, and formation of tubular networks. Remarkably, an altered pattern of vessel growth and maturation was detected in postnatal retinas from endothelium-specific Grk2 knockout animals. Mouse embryos with systemic or endothelium-selective Grk2 ablation …
Primary intra and extradural solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma of thoracic spine with paravertebral intrathoracic spread: Case report and rev…
2020
Abstract Solitary fibrous tumors/hemangiopericytomas (SFTs/HPCs), constitute 1% of all CNS tumors. Spinal SFTs/HPCs are extremely rare. To date, few retrospective studies and case reports of primary spinal SFTs/HPCs have been published in the literature. We report clinical and radiological presentation, surgical treatment, and post-operative outcome at three years follow-up of a rare case of primary spinal intra and extradural SFT/HPC of thoracic spine with dumbbell shaped paravertebral intrathoracic spread and multidirectional erosion of the bone. A 73-year-old female presented with progressive lower limbs weakness and hypoesthesia below the rib cage. MRI showed an irregular isointense T5-…
