From Databases to Ontologies

2009

This chapter introduces the UML profile for OWL as an essential instrument for bridging the gap between the legacy relational databases and OWL ontologies. We address one of the long-standing relational database design problems where initial conceptual model (a semantically clear domain conceptualization ontology) gets “lost” during conversion into the normalized database schema. The problem is that such “loss” makes database inaccessible for direct query by domain experts familiar with the conceptual model only. This problem can be avoided by exporting the database into RDF according to the original conceptual model (OWL ontology) and formulating semantically clear queries in SPARQL over t…

Applications of Ontologies in Knowledge Management Systems

2014

Abstract Enterprises are realizing that their core asset in 21st century is knowledge. In an organization knowledge resides in databases, knowledge bases, filing cabinets and peoples' head. Organizational knowledge is distributed in nature and its poor management causes repetition of activities across the enterprise. To get true benefits from this asset, it is important for an organization to “know what they know”. That’s why many organizations are investing a lot in managing their knowledge. Artificial intelligence techniques have a huge contribution in organizational knowledge management. In this article we are reviewing the applications of ontologies in knowledge management realm

On the definition of generic multi-layered ontologies for urban applications

2000

Cooperation of information systems is essential for providing decision support for urban management applications. This involves sharing data across collections of the heterogeneous information systems that are used to manage large urban infrastructures. The objective of this work is to define a spatial ontology to describe key features of urban applications, providing a foundation for semantic reconciliation among heterogeneous spatial information sources. We propose a multi-layered ontologies definition framework consisting of ontology layers which are composed of a generic functional structure and one or more domain ontologies. The functional structure embodies general ontological concept…

Do we need metamodels AND ontologies for engineering platforms?

2006

In this paper we show how the joint use of metamodeling and ontologies allows to describe domain knowledge for a complex domain. Ontologies are used as stabilized descriptions of a business domain while metamodels allow a fine description of the domain (to be constructed in the initial phases of modeling). We propose to use an ontology for early categorization, i.e., as a "natural" complement of the formal system that is induced by the metamodel.

On marrying ontological and metamodeling technical spaces

2007

In software engineering, the use of models and metamodeling approaches (e.g., MDA with MOF/UML) for purposes such as software design or software validation is an established practice. Ontologies constitute domain models formalized using expressive logic languages for class definitions and rules. Hence, when seen from an abstract point of view, the two paradigms and their various technological spaces seem closely related. However, in the state-of-the-art research and practice the two technologies are just beginning to converge and the relationship between the two is still under exploration. In this paper, we give an outline of current ontology technologies, such as the Semantic Web standards…
