A strategy for the identification of building structures under base excitations

2008

In this paper the evolution of a time domain dynamic identification technique based on a statistical moment approach is presented. This technique is usable in the case of structures under base random excitations in the linear state and in the non linear one. By applying Itoˆ stochastic calculus special algebraic equations can be obtained depending on the statistical moments of the response of the system to be identified. Such equations can be used for the dynamic identification of the mechanical parameters and of the input. The above equations, differently from many techniques in the literature, show the possibility to obtain the identification of the dissipation characteristics independent…

Dissimilarity Measures for the Identification of Earthquake Focal Mechanisms

2013

This work presents a study about dissimilarity measures for seismic signals, and their relation to clustering in the particular problem of the identification of earthquake focal mechanisms, i.e. the physical phenomena which have generated an earthquake. Starting from the assumption that waveform similarity implies similarity in the focal parameters, important details about them can be determined by studying waveforms related to the wave field produced by earthquakes and recorded by a seismic network. Focal mechanisms identification is currently investigated by clustering of seismic events, using mainly cross-correlation dissimilarity in conjunction with hierarchical clustering algorithm. By…

Speeding up the Consensus Clustering methodology for microarray data analysis

2010

Abstract Background The inference of the number of clusters in a dataset, a fundamental problem in Statistics, Data Analysis and Classification, is usually addressed via internal validation measures. The stated problem is quite difficult, in particular for microarrays, since the inferred prediction must be sensible enough to capture the inherent biological structure in a dataset, e.g., functionally related genes. Despite the rich literature present in that area, the identification of an internal validation measure that is both fast and precise has proved to be elusive. In order to partially fill this gap, we propose a speed-up of Consensus (Consensus Clustering), a methodology whose purpose…

“SAGOME” IN SICILY: SUBJECTS, FUNCTIONS, TECHNIQUES AND THE CASE STUDY OF NICOSIA

2016

This article analyzes the iconographic subjects, the practical functions and the compositional techniques of a particular form of artistic representation that was popular between the 18th and 19th centuries: these are the painted “sagome” (cut-outs) found in Sicily. Particular attention is paid to a series of six paintings, unknown until now, executed on shaped wooden panels and painted on both sides, which are stored in the library of the Convent of the Capuchin Friars Minor of Nicosia (Enna).

Vibration-based identification of mechanical properties of orthotropic arbitrarily shaped plates: Numerical and experimental assessment

2018

Abstract An innovative procedure is introduced for the identification of the mechanical parameters of orthotropic plates of arbitrary shape, under various boundary conditions, based on vibration data. The method employs a combination of a convenient Rayleigh-Ritz approach and Particle-Swarm Optimization to estimate elastic constants of the orthotropic material in a straightforward manner, without requiring computationally demanding iterative Finite Element analyses. Specifically, the pb-2 Rayleigh-Ritz procedure is extended and applied to deal with orthotropic plates, simplifying the approach to more easily treat generic plate shapes, taking advantage of the Green's theorem. The method is t…

A New Mathematical Approach for Faults Identification and Location in Distribution Systems

2009

The paper presents a new methodology for fault identification and location in electrical distribution systems, based on the use of a lumped parameter representation of the faulted line and on a matrix approach. Utilities are quite interested in such items, since the new required quality standards put severe constraints on faults management and clearance.

Reduced Complexity Models in the Identifi cation of Dynamical Networks: links with sparsi cation problems.

2009

In many applicative scenarios it is important to derive information about the topology and the internal connections of more dynamical systems interacting together. Examples can be found in fields as diverse as Economics, Neuroscience and Biochemistry. The paper deals with the problem of deriving a descriptive model of a network, collecting the node outputs as time series with no use of a priori insight on the topology. We cast the problem as the optimization of a cost function operating a trade-off between accuracy and complexity in the final model. We address the problem of reducing the complexity by fixing a certain degree of sparsity, and trying to find the solution that ``better'' satis…

Advanced Motion Control in Induction Motor Systems - Modelling, Analysis and Control

Using a unified notation, this thesis collects and discusses the most important steps and issues in the design of estimation and control algorithms for induction motors. It contains many estimation and control algorithms. Their stability is analyzed and their performance is illustrated by simulations and experiments on the same induction motor. An intense and challenging collective research effort is carefully documented and analyzed, with the aim of providing and clarifying the basic intuition and tools required in the analysis and design of nonlinear feedback control algorithms. This material should be of specific interest to engineers who are engaged in the design of control algorithms f…

Robust and Model Predictive Control applied to DC/DC converters and Shunt Active Filters
