Identification and cell lineage of individual neural precursors in the Drosophila CNS.

The Drosophila CNS is complex enough to serve as a model for many of the molecular, cellular and developmental functions of the vertebrate CNS, yet simple enough for single-cell analysis. Recent advances have provided molecular markers that allow most Drosophila CNS precursors to be uniquely identified, as well as methods for determining the complete cell lineage of each precursor. A detailed understanding of wild-type neurogenesis, combined with existing molecular genetic techniques, should provide insight into the fundamental mechanisms that generate neuronal and glial diversity.

Computational identification of chemical compounds with potential anti-Chagas activity using a classification tree

Chagas disease is endemic to 21 Latin American countries and is a great public health problem in that region. Current chemotherapy remains unsatisfactory; consequently the need to search for new drugs persists. Here we present a new approach to identify novel compounds with potential anti-chagasic action. A large dataset of 584 compounds, obtained from the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, was selected to develop the computational model. Dragon software was used to calculate the molecular descriptors and WEKA software to obtain the classification tree. Conservation Work on an Ancient Sicilian Processional Banner: Preliminary Analyses and in Situ Restoration

Abstract Before carrying out the conservation work on the gilded wooden frame of the processional banner coming from Tusa, Sicily, some preliminary diagnostic analyses were conducted in order to identify materials that made up the wooden frame. After a micro-sampling phase, a thin section of the wooden support allowed to identify the timber as linden wood (basswood). The X-Ray Fluorescence analysis confirmed the presence of a thin layer of primer made of plaster and animal glue covered with a red bolus primer, used for the gilding process. The restoration was carried out during the opening hours of the museum, allowing visitors to be informed on the restoration phases.

The ability to predict new chemical entity performance using in vivo animal models has been under investigation for more than two decades. Pharmaceutical companies use their own strategies to make decisions on the most appropriate formulation starting early in development. In this paper the biopharmaceutical decision trees available in four EFPIA partners (Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol Meyers Squibb and Janssen) were discussed by 7 companies of which 4 had no decision tree currently defined.
