New insights into the composition of historical remedies and pharmaceutical formulations: the identification of natural resins and balsams by gas chr…

2020

AbstractThe present paper reports one of the first studies on the identification of natural resins and balsams in modern era drug formulations. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to investigate the composition of ancient remedies and pharmaceutical formulations coming from the Spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala in Rome, founded at the end of the seventeenth century by the Discalced Carmelites. The obtained results highlight the presence of complex mixtures containing resinaceous and lipidic-based compounds. Thanks to the detection of characteristic markers, it was possible to identify several natural resins, such as guaiacum resin, ladano resin and scamm…

Identification of new viruses specific to the honey bee mite Varroa destructor

2019

AbstractLarge-scale colony losses among managed Western honey bees have become a serious threat to the beekeeping industry in the last decade. There are multiple factors contributing to these losses but the impact of Varroa destructor parasitism is by far the most important, along with the contribution of some pathogenic viruses vectored by the mite. So far, more than 20 viruses have been identified infecting the honey bee, most of them RNA viruses. They may be maintained either as covert infections or causing severe symptomatic infections, compromising the viability of the colony. In silico analysis of available transcriptomic data obtained from mites collected in the USA and Europe as wel…

Identification of highly effective antitrypanosomal compounds in essential oils from the Apiaceae family

2018

The Apiaceae family encompasses aromatic plants of economic importance employed in foodstuffs, beverages, perfumery, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Apiaceae are rich sources of essential oils because of the wealth of secretory structures (ducts and vittae) they are endowed with. The Apiaceae essential oils are available on an industrial level because of the wide cultivation and disposability of the bulky material from which they are extracted as well as their relatively cheap price. In the fight against protozoal infections, essential oils may represent new therapeutic options. In the present work, we focused on a panel of nine Apiaceae species (Siler montamon, Sison amomum, Echinophora spi…

Drosophila as a Model System for the Identification of Pharmacological Therapies in Neurodegenerative Diseases

2019

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) constitute a very important problem in our current society, as they are usually associated with the aging process. NDs are devastating disorders that lead to severe disabilities and ultimately to death and have a considerable impact on human health. Although intense efforts are being made to shed light on the pathophysiology underlying these diseases, an important concern is that NDs are incurable and existing therapies are only directed to relieve their symptoms or delay the progression of the disease. Therefore, the development of new therapeutic approaches against NDs is urgent and challenging. In such a scenario, Drosophila is a very valuable model organ…

Force/Torque-Sensorless Joint Stiffness Estimation in Articulated Soft Robots

2022

Currently, the access to the knowledge of stiffness values is typically constrained to a-priori identified models or datasheet information, which either do not usually take into ac- count the full range of possible stiffness values or need extensive experiments. This work tackles the challenge of stiffness estimation in articulated soft manipulators, and it proposes an innovative solution adding value to the previous research by removing the necessity for force/torque sensors and generalizing to multi-degree- of-freedom robots. Built upon the theory of unknown input-state observers and recursive least-square algorithms, the solution is independent of the actuator model parameters and its in…

Historical and Contemporary Background

2016

The second chapter provides a brief historical background of fundamental motivation by focussing on two main themes given in chronological order. The first adopts a historical approach, identifying several theoretical traditions and influential theorists who have worked on the idea of fundamental motivation. This brief overview includes ideas preceding the rise of evolutionary theory and the subsequent emergence of such contemporary theoretical traditions as psychoanalysis, behaviourism and humanistic psychology. The second theme centres on the identification of the most recent contemporary contributions that are quite similar to the main ideas of this book. The concluding section comments …

From point to area: Upscaling approaches for Late Quaternary archaeological and environmental data

2014

Abstract The study of past socio-environmental systems integrates a variety of terrestrial archives. To understand regional or continental socio-environmental interactions proxy data from local archives need to be transferred to larger spatial scales. System properties like spatial heterogeneity, historical and spatial contingency, nonlinearity, scale dependency or emergence make generalizations from local observations to larger scales difficult. As these are common properties of natural and social systems, the development of an interdisciplinary upscaling framework for socio-environmental systems remains a challenge. For example, the integration of social and environmental data is often hi…

Neutron-Induced Effects on a Self-Refresh DRAM

2022

International audience; The field of radiation effects in electronics research includes unknowns for every new device, node size, and technical development. In this study, static and dynamic test methods were used to define the response of a self-refresh DRAM under neutron irradiation. The neutron-induced effects were investigated and characterised by event cross sections, soft-error rate, and bitmaps evaluations, leading to an identification of permanent and temporary stuck cells, single-bit upsets, and block errors. Block errors were identified in different patterns with dependency in the addressing order, leading to up to two thousand faulty words per event, representing a real threat fr…

Leaf and stem anatomy in eight Hypericum species (Clusiaceae).

2013

Abstract - Foliar micromorphology, epicuticular wax morphology and anatomical features of leaves and stem, particularly secondary xylem, were examined with light microscopy, general and histochemical staining and scanning electron microscopy in eight Hypericum species. Outer tegument tissue and type of secondary xylem are determining characteristics. Secondary xylem is ring-porous in H. perforatum, H. perfoliatum, H. tetrapterum, H. triquetrifolium, H. androsaemum and H. hircinum. In H. aegypticum and H. pubescens xylem is diffuse-porous, which is considered to be a more primitive type. These characteristics may be considered an additional criterion for species identification.
