Clay-biosurfactant materials as functional drug delivery systems: Slowing down effect in the in vitro release of cinnamic acid

2017

Abstract The main objectives of the present paper were the preparation and characterization of new surfactant-modified clays and the evaluation of their potential applicability as drug delivery systems for the oral administration of the cinnamic acid (CA) drug. The organoclays (OC) were prepared by loading different amounts of the biocompatible nonionic polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate surfactant (Tween20) onto K10 montmorillonite (Mt) clay and characterized through the construction of the adsorption isotherms by means of the spectrophotometric method. The performance of the prepared material was verified by gathering the adsorption isotherms of the cinnamic acid onto the Mt/Tween20 org…

Identification of Novel Wsf1 Mutations in a Sicilian Child with Wolfram Syndrome

2014

Wolfram Syndrome (WS) is a rare hereditary disease with autosomal recessive inheritance with incomplete penetrance. It is characterized by diabetes mellitus associated with progressive optic atrophy. The diagnosis is essentially clinical and mutation analysis is used to confirm the diagnosis. In the present study we describe the clinical and molecular features of a diabetic child carrying two novel WFS1 mutations. The Sicilian proband and his non-affected family were studied. Ophthalmologic examination included: visual acuity determination and funduscopy, optical coherent tomography, retinal fluorangiography, perimetry and electroretinogram. Molecular methods: automatic sequencing of PCR am…

Role of anthropometric factors, self-perception, and diet on weight misperception among young adolescents: a cross-sectional study

2018

Adolescence overweight and obesity have increased considerably, and the misperception of their weight status could reduce the efficiency of intervention programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence rate of misperception and to assess the relationship between weight perception and anthropometric parameters, self-perception, physical activity, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. A total of 1643 young adolescents (11–16 years old) were surveyed in a cross-sectional investigation during two scholastic years (period October–May of 2012–2013 and 2013–2014) in 15 secondary schools of Sicily, southern Italy. Data on demographic information, anthropometric characteristics (bio…

Congenital hypothyroidism: A 2020-2021 consensus guidelines update-An ENDO-European Reference Network initiative endorsed by the European Society for…

2021

Background: An ENDO-European Reference Network (ERN) initiative was launched that was endorsed by the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and the European Society for Endocrinology with 22 participants from the ENDO-ERN and the two societies. The aim was to update the practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of congenital hypothyroidism (CH). A systematic literature search was conducted to identify key articles on neonatal screening, diagnosis, and management of primary and central CH. The evidence-based guidelines were graded with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation system, describing both the strength of recommendations and the quali…

Disease management of type 2 diabetes: a follow-up analysis in a sanitary district of Sicily

2011

AIM:The aim of this paper was to analyze the Disease management of type 2 diabetes in a sanitary district of the Sicily Region (Italy). METHODS: In a population of 9 698 subjects, we selected patients with known type 2 diabetes: a cohort of 385 subjects, (206 women and 179 men) following up for one year. Prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the analyzed population was 3.97%. A great lot of cohort was on a diet. RESULTS: After one year, a per cent reduction of obese and overweight subjects was observed. No differences were observed for Body Mass Index (BMI) at the beginning and at the end of the study. After one year, through educational meetings with the doctor, a significant increase of knowle…

An agile process modelling approach for BIM projects

2016

International audience; In the domain of Building Information Modelling (BIM), the open standardisation of methods for product and process modelling is undertaken by the buildingSMART association. Currently, buildingSMART recommends the use of Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) for creating process models in Information Delivery Manuals (IDMs). This paper argues that BPMN is closely linked to the waterfall nature of today’s BIM projects, leading to a number of issues including long project durations, lack of stakeholder involvement, and disconnect of processes and data. Subject-oriented Business Process Management (S-BPM) is introduced as an alternative modelling approach for IDMs, …
