Hyperbranched Polyglycerols with Elevated Molecular Weights: A Facile Two-Step Synthesis Protocol Based on Polyglycerol Macroinitiators

2009

Hyperbranched polyglycerol (PG) is established as one of the few hyperbranched polymers that offer the possibility to control molecular weight up to Mn = 6000 g/mol. This work introduces a facile 2-step strategy that relies on the use of a low molecular weight PG (Mn = 500 and 1000 g/mol) as a macroinitiator for the slow addition of glycidol, permitting to overcome previous limitations concerning molecular weights and molecular weight control. A systematic investigation of the effect of the degree of deprotonation on the control of the polymerization reaction has been carried out. A series of hyperbranched PGs with molecular weights up to Mn = 24000 g/mol has been obtained under fully contr…

Synthesis, characterization and properties of functional star and dendritic block copolymers of ethylene oxide and glycidol with oligoglycidol branch…

2009

Abstract Well-defined, four-arm star block copolymers of ethylene oxide and glycidol were prepared via controlled anionic polymerization using protected glycidol. The length of the poly(ethylene oxide) block was varied from DP = 10 to 50, while the length of the short polyglycidol block remained nearly constant, at DP = 4–6. Star block copolymers with hydroxyl groups at the ends of the arms after conversion to the corresponding alkoxides were used as multifunctional macroinitiators for the sequential polymerization of ethylene oxide and protected glycidol. After deprotection, the branched block copolymers of ethylene oxide and glycidol had narrow molar mass distributions and multiple hydrox…

Plasma levels of benperidol, prolactin, and homovanillic acid after intravenous versus two different kinds of oral application of the neuroleptic in …

2009

Plasma levels of prolactin (PRL) and the butyrophenone neuroleptic benperidol (BPD) were closely followed 0 to 48 h after acute application of 6 mg BPD as intravenous injection, orally as liquid, and orally as tablets in 12 schizophrenic patients using a partially randomized cross over design. Drug concentrations showed application specific pharmacokinetic behavior with complete elimination within 48 h. All three applications led to a biphasic PRL response with pronounced initial plasma PRL peaks returning to baseline levels within 48 h. The results suggest that after acute neuroleptic challenge BPD plasma levels as low as 2-3 ng/ml can be sufficient for complete depletion of pituitary PRL …

Acceptance of noninvasive computed tomography coronary angiography: for a patient-friendly medicine.

2014

PURPOSE: This study was done to evaluate the psychological state and anxiety of patients undergoing computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA), and assess their acceptance and satisfaction compared to invasive conventional coronary angiography (CCA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 442 consecutive patients (282 male; mean age 57.7 ± 9.5 years) who underwent CTCA for suspected or known coronary artery disease were evaluated with the Endler Multimodality Anxiety Scales (EMAS) before and after the scan, and a questionnaire administered after the scan. Among the 442 patients, 181 had a history of CCA. Two radiologists assessed the image quality of CTCA. RESULTS: Anxiety was more intense …

Antiaggressive and motor effects of haloperidol show different temporal patterns in the development of tolerance.

1993

Abstract The study of the temporal course of tolerance development was used as a means to separate different aspects of the action of haloperidol on social behavior. Agonistic behavior was studied in isolated male mice that confronted standard opponents (anosmic and grouped conspecifics) in a neutral area. The aggressive and motor behaviors of the experimental animals were evaluated 30 min or 24 h either after a single injection of haloperidol (0.4 mg/kg) or following the last of a series of 15 or 30 injections. When animals were evaluated 30 min after the haloperidol injection, no tolerance to the antiaggressive effects was evident. The action on immobility, on the contrary, showed a clear…

Improving diagnostic accuracy of MDCT coronary angiography in patients with mild heart rhythm irregularities using ECG editing

2006

OBJECTIVE. The objective of our study was to compare diagnostic accuracy of MDCT coronary angiography in a population of patients with mild heart rhythm irregularities before and after editing the ECG. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Thirty-eight patients who underwent MDCT coronary angiography and conventional coronary angiography were enrolled in the study. The inclusion criterion was the presence of mild heart rhythm irregularities (i.e., premature beats; atrial fibrillation; mistriggering; or low heart rate, defined as 40 beats per minute or less) during the scan. All patients underwent MDCT with the following parameters: 16 detectors; collimation, 0.75 mm; gantry rotation time, 375 msec; 120 kV;…

Copolymerization Kinetics of Glycidol and Ethylene Oxide, Propylene Oxide, and 1,2-Butylene Oxide: From Hyperbranched to Multiarm Star Topology

2016

Copolymerization of established epoxide monomers with glycidol (G) is a key reaction to prepare branched or hyperbranched polyethers. The kinetics of the multibranching anionic ring-opening copolymerization of glycidol (a cyclic latent AB2 monomer) with ethylene oxide (EO), propylene oxide (PO), and 1,2-butylene oxide (BO; cyclic latent AB monomers), respectively, in dimethyl sulfoxide was studied. Online 1H NMR spectroscopy was employed for in situ monitoring of the individual monomer consumption during the entire course of the statistical copolymerization. Varying the counterion, both the cesium alkoxide and potassium alkoxide initiated copolymerization were studied and compared. From the…

Language ideologies in the Romanian Banat : analysis of interviews and academic writings among the Hungarians and Germans

2009

This is an introduction to a compilation of six articles on language ideologies in the Romanian Banat. My dissertation was initiated by fieldwork in the area, resulting to a database of interviews among the Hungarian and German inhabitants. This data is compared to intellectual writings. With regards to researcher position, I identify myself as a traveler in the area and as a foreign scholar. The analytical framework of this study draws from the study of Language Ideologies and Conversation Analysis. Here, language ideologies are broadly defined as metalinguistic discourse or talk about language. In the analysis of interviews, conversation analysis is used, in order to analyze the emergent c…

Effect of Injectable or Inhalational Anesthetics and of Neuroleptic, Neuroleptanalgesic, and Sedative Agents on Tumor Blood Flow

1988

Among other parameters, varying blood flow values may be responsible for tumor-to-tumor variabilities in the radiobiologically hypoxic cell fraction of experimental rodent tumors. To test whether changes in tumor blood flow may be caused by anesthetic agents often used in radiobiology, the effect of injectable and inhalational anesthetics and of neuroleptic, neuroleptanalgesic, and sedative agents on blood flow in subcutaneous DS-carcinosarcomas implanted in Sprague-Dawley rats has been investigated using the 85Kr clearance technique. In conscious rats, 20-100 min after animal instrumentation mean blood flow is 0.62 +/- 0.17 ml/g/min (mean +/- SD) in 0.75 +/- 0.15 g tumors at a mean arteria…
