Pollution models and inverse distance weighting: some critical remarks

2013

International audience; When evaluating the impact of pollution, measurements from remote stations are often weighted by the inverse of distance raised to some nonnegative power (IDW). This is derived from Shepard's method of spatial interpolation (1968). The paper discusses the arbitrary character of the exponent of distance and the problem of monitoring stations that are close to the reference point. From elementary laws of physics, it is determined which exponent of distance should be chosen (or its upper bound) depending on the form of pollution encountered, such as radiant pollution (including radioactivity and sound), air pollution (plumes, puffs, and motionless clouds by using the cl…

Survey of midwives' knowledge of caries prevention in perinatal care.

2014

Purpose To assess midwives' knowledge about oral health and early caries prevention during perinatal care for mothers and babies. Study design and methods A survey developed by the investigators was conducted among midwives to assess their knowledge about caries etiology, their attitude toward their role in early caries prevention, and prophylactic measures recommended during pregnancy, and after birth, for their babies. Self-administered questionnaires were sent to 180 midwives in hospitals and 323 midwives from a midwives' association in Hesse, Germany. Results Response rates were 46% (83/180) and 56% (181/323); a total of 264 questionnaires were evaluated. Most midwives were familiar wit…

[Current developments and perspectives on the diagnosis and treatment of urinary incontinence and genital prolapse in women].

2012

As a key area of gynaecology, urogynaecology has undergone impressive changes in the past few years. Together with the high prevalence of functional pelvic floor disorders, modern anaesthesia procedures and the introduction of new, innovative minimally invasive operation techniques have led to a dramatic increase in the number of operations for incontinence and prolapses. The increasingly subtle diagnostic options, such as, e. g., 2D and 3D sonography of the pelvic floor provide unambiguous findings and facilitate decision making. Tension-free vaginal slings in retro-pubic, trans-obturator or single-incision techniques show a high success rate with few complications and have almost complete…

Time-lapse technology: evaluation of embryo quality and new markers for embryo selection

2012

Current methods of embryo evaluation rely mainly on static observations of the embryo´s morphology. These observations are inevitably restricted to specific times and, considering that the development of the embryo is a dynamic process, several critical stages in between observations may go unnoticed. These methods are also very subjective, and variations between embryologists may affect critical decisions that will, in turn, affect the overall success of the IVF clinics. On the other hand, an increased number of multiple pregnancies calls for a reduction in the number of embryos transferred, making the selection procedure even more challenging for the embryologist. Therefore, new markers t…

Experiences and attitudes of midwives during the birth of a pregnant woman with COVID-19 infection: A qualitative study

2021

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the most important threats to global health. Midwives are at the core of the response to the pandemic. Women still need midwifery support and care. The work of midwives is acknowledged as emotionally demanding, and their welfare may be compromised by a range of workplace and personal stress factors. Aim To investigate the experiences and attitudes of midwives who have provided pregnancy and childbirth care to women with a confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection. Methods A qualitative phenomenological study was carried out in two Spanish tertiary hospitals. Fourteen midwives were recruited by purposive sampling technique. Data wer…

Stress management strategies and quality of life in undergraduate nursing and midwifery students in Poland: A pilot study

2022

Abstract Aim To establish the level of the quality of life (QOL) and its determinants in nursing and midwifery students, evaluate stress management strategies and find the correlation between the frequency of specific strategies and the QOL. Design Diagnostic survey. Methods The study was conducted in June 2019. Two hundred thirty‐four undergraduate students were examined with the use of Mini‐Cope Inventory of Stress Management Measurement (Mini‐Cope) and World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument Brief Form. Results The average QOL of the respondents was found as good (4.06 ± 0.73). The students graded their QOL in the social relationship domain the highest (15.98 ± 2.97) and the…

Einfluß der Proliferationsrate auf den Krankheitsverlauf von nodalnegativen Mammakarzinomen

1995

In 250 patients with node-negative breast cancer and no systemic adjuvant therapy the impact on the prognosis of the variables age, histological tumour type, tumour size, histological grade, receptor status and localisation of the tumour within the breast, was studied. Patients were followed over a mean period of 60 (range 7-164) months. In a subset of 124 cases additional examination of the growth fraction rate, detected by immunohistochemical determination of antibody Ki-67 and semiquantitative measurement of the stained tumour cell nuclei was performed. In 43 cases, measurement of S-phase fraction by flow cytometry was also performed. By univariate analysis, the histological tumour type …

Wind speed spatial estimation for energy planning in Sicily: introduction and statistical analysis

2008

Abstract The exploitation of the renewable energy sources plays a key role for achieving the CO 2 emissions reduction targets established by the Kyoto Protocol, as well as for facing the shortage of world fossil fuels reserves. In countries like Italy, with an high potential in terms of wind power generation, an efficient energy planning based on renewables is a very complex task. It encompasses many aspects: the resource availability assessment, the compliance with environmental and legislative constraints and last, but not least, the technical aspects linked to the safe integration to the grid of the intermittent power generated by the wind farms. This paper is the first part of a study a…

2021

Cel pracy. Celem badania była (1) ocena stopnia przygotowania studentów pielęgniarstwa i położnictwa do egzaminu typu OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination), (2) poznanie opinii studentów na temat egzaminowania w formie OSCE i (3) poznanie emocji towarzyszących egzaminowi.Materiał i metody. Zbadano 160 (53,33%) studentów kierunku pielęgniarstwo oraz 140 (46,67%) studentów kierunku położnictwo z 5 uczelni medycznych. Zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego i technikę ankietowania. Wykorzystano ankietę własną.Wyniki. Studenci najlepiej zostali przygotowani z zakresu wykonywania zabiegów higieniczno–pielęgnacyjnych (M=4,22, SD=0,85) a najsłabiej do wykonywania zabiegów na przewodz…

Zirkadiane Serotonin- und Melatonin-Serumspiegel bei Anorexia-nervosa-Patientinnen im Vergleich zu normal-menstruierenden Frauen

1996

Day and night rhythms of melatonin and serotonin were measured in four female anorexia nervosa patients and for comparison in a control group with normal 28-day menstrual cycle. In the anorexia nervosa group the levels of gonadotropins and sexual steroids were distinctly lowered. In the LHRH test the hormonal profile showed pubertal to prepubertal patterns of secretion with an only moderate increase of LH and distinct shifting of the LH/FSH ratio in direction of FSH. For both groups the 24-hour profiles of melatonin and serotonin showed a normal cycle, i.e. melatonin had its maximum by night, whereas serotonin in contrast displayed its highest values by day. However, in the group of patient…
