Solidarity as a weapon : the International Red Aid, an organization of defense in face of repression of the communist movement (1918-1934)

2022

In the aftermath of the First World War, a major anticommunist and repressive wave swept across the European continent, following the smashing of attempts to export the Bolshevik revolutionary breath from Russia. In this context, the Communist International founded, at its 4th Congress in 1922, the International Red Aid (IRA), a auxiliary organization specifically charged with helping revolutionary militants who were victims of repression. Its French section, which was created the following year, organized material, moral and legal support for the accused and prisoners, while at the same time carrying out the political struggle for amnesty. IRA is also one of the main actors of the practica…

An invasive species may be better than none: invasive signal and native noble crayfish have similar community effects

2014

14 pages; International audience; Human activities have resulted in the decline of native crayfish and promoted the spread of invasive crayfish species in European fresh waters, threatening ecosystem structure and functioning. We compared effects of native noble crayfish (Astacus astacus), invasive signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) and of the absence of crayfish on leaf litter breakdown and invertebrate prey density and biomass in stream ecosystems. In microcosm experiments, invertebrate shredder density was significantly reduced by crayfish presence but similarly affected by the two crayfish species. While crayfish did not directly influence leaf litter breakdown, their presence r…

Data from: Plant – herbivorous beetle networks: molecular characterization of trophic ecology within a threatened steppic environment

2015

DNA barcoding facilitates many evolutionary and ecological studies, including the examination of the dietary diversity of herbivores. In this study, we present a survey of ecological associations between herbivorous beetles and host plants from seriously threatened European steppic grasslands. We determined host plants for the majority (65%) of steppic leaf beetles (55 species) and weevils (59) known from central Europe using two barcodes (trnL and rbcL) and two sequencing strategies (Sanger for mono/oligophagous species and Illumina for polyphagous taxa). To better understand the ecological associations between steppic beetles and their host plants, we tested the hypothesis that leaf beetl…

Greenhouse gas from moving bed based integrated fixed film activated sludge membrane bioreactors

2016

The present paper reports the results of a nitrous oxide production investigation in a moving bed based integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) membrane bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant designed in accordance with the UCT layout for biological phosphorous removal. Samples of gas and liquid were collected in order to measure the gaseous, as well as the dissolved concentration of N2O. Furthermore, the gas flow rate from each reactor was measured and the gas flux was estimated. The results confirmed that the anoxic reactor represents the main source of nitrous oxide production. A significant production of N2O was, however, also found in the anaerobic reactor, thus indicating a probable occur…

New bundle branch block after coronary artery bypass grafting— evaluation by CK-MB isoenzyme analysis and transoesophageal echocardiography

1990

Twelve patients with a new complete bundle branch block after coronary artery bypass grafting underwent transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE). The results of TEE were compared with the pre-operative ventriculography, CK-MB isoenzyme time-release curves and clinical course. In eight patients with transient right bundle branch block or bifascicular block, low CK-MB activities and an uncomplicated postoperative course, transoesophageal echocardiography showed no new segmental wall motion abnormalities apart from a paradoxical septal movement in five. A persistent right or left bundle branch block was associated with either elevated isoenzyme activities, transoesophageal echocardiographic evi…

Oral manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease

2017

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, have important extraintestinal manifestations, notably in the oral cavity. These oral manifestations can constitute important clinical clues in the diagnosis and management of IBD, and include changes at the immune and bacterial levels. Aphthous ulcers, pyostomatitis vegetans, cobblestoning and gingivitis are important oral findings frequently observed in IBD patients. Their presentations vary considerably and might be well diagnosed and distinguished from other oral lesions. Infections, drug side effects, deficiencies in some nutrients and many other diseases involved with oral manifestations should also b…
