Of whales and men: Caitríona O’Reilly’s septentrional voyage in “The Sea Cabinet” (2006)
2021
International audience; The title-poem of Caitríona O’Reilly’s second collection – The Sea Cabinet – is a sequence of five ekphrastic pieces paying tribute to the city of Hull’s past as a major whaling port. As she perambulates through the galleries of the Maritime Museum, the Irish poetess is inspired by all the paraphernalia on display: skeletons of various species of whales, whaler’s tools but also journals, logbooks, paintings, illustrations and hundreds of examples of the folk art and mythemes of the whaler. From one poem to the next, O’Reilly depicts the northernness of the Arctic Ocean as eery but bewitching otherness, focusing on illustrations of Captain Graville’s whaling ship ice-…

'L’Iris illyrica'
2013
Growth and biomass partitioning of Arbutus unedo, Laurus nobilis, Phillyrea angustifolia and Rhamnus alaternus seedlings under water deficit
2013
Water scarcity in the Mediterranean areas is very common and the selection of drought tolerant species is a priority for landscaping purposes in the Mediterranean areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of water deficit on growth and biomass partitioning of Arbutus unedo, Laurus nobilis, Phillyrea angustifolia and Rhamnus alaternus. Seventy-two seedlings per species were grown in the greenhouse in 4-liter pots and three water regimes were imposed starting on 6 April and until 9 June, 2010. One-third of the plants was well irrigated to maintain soil water content in the 25-35% range (CTR); a second group of plants was deficit-irrigated to maintain soil water content in …
A Hybrid Cavitand Made by Capping Permethylated α-Cyclodextrin with Cyclotriveratrylene
2012
A hybrid C 3 -symmetric cavitand 1, in which permethylated α-cyclodextrin (PM α-CDX) is capped with cyclotriveratrylene (CTV), has been prepared in 8 % yield by intramolecular cyclization of a vanillyl alcohol derivative attached to the primary rim of the CDX platform. The reaction proceeds diastereoselectively (dr ≈ 6:1), the chirality of the α-glucopyranosyl units controlling the chirality of the CTV component. Interestingly, in polar solvents, 1 shows self-complexation properties as the primary methoxy groups of the CDX component are directed towards the CTV cavity.

Caitrìona O’Reilly : From ecopoetry to ontopoetics
2022
Caitrìona O'Reilly's poetry is remarkable for its attention to the natural world, to fauna, flora, the four elements and landscapes; for its keen sense of nature's superior and mysterious beauty ("Atlantic", "Octopus", "Six Landscapes", "Bee on Agastache") but also fragility ("Polar", "Iceland"). Without question, it can be described as "ecopoetry". I will explore the fundamentals of O’Reilly’s "eco-conscious" and scholarly work, and show how, in her work, "ecopoetry" amounts to "ontopoetics", which is to be understood as "poetics of being". The natural world captured poetically by Caitrìona O'Reilly is a "perceived" world, i.e. a world seen, observed, felt, touched, heard by a subject. The…
Volatile compounds of fresh fruits of Phillyrea latifolia L.
2004
The volatiles constituents of fresh fruits of Phillyrea latifolia were submitted to investigation by GC-MS. The plants grows wild in different zones of the mediterranean region and its leaves and fruits are used as astringent, diuretic and anti-inflammatory. The volatiles were sampled by solid-phase microextraction (SPME), with a 100 mm polydimethylsiloxane fibre a 50 °C for 1 h. The headspace main components of fresh fruits of Phillyrea latifolia included limonene, β-cariophillene, eremophilene, α-muurolene, β -eudesmol e spatulenol.
Edukacja historyczna: Polska – Europa – świat.Jak przedstawiać historię Polski, by Europa i świat chciały ją poznawać?
2020
This publication has been prepared by a group of doctoral studens at the Institute of History of the University of Opole, as a result of discussions on the prospects for the development of historical education in Poland, Europe and the world, undertaken during the course: Historical education: Poland – Europe – the World. The result of these considerations is this article, which proposes some possibilities of presenting the history of Poland in an objective manner, at the same time one that may arouse interest outside Poland. The content of the article is a proposal to promote prominent figures associated with Poland over the cen- turies, people of different sexes, professions and fields of…
