Optimization of the Mix-Design System for the Sub-ballast Railroad
2017
Bituminous sub-ballast is an alternative solution to the unbound granular sub-ballast used in the railway track due to several benefits that it can provide. Indeed, it contributes to maintain the moisture content in the subgrade unchanged during all year. This decreases the subgrade deterioration process. Moreover, the presence of bituminous sub-ballast can also reduce vertical stiffness variations on the track; it can have a positive effect in the maintenance needs at transition sections (bridge-embankment) and in the attenuation of the vibrations induced by the rail traffic. Despite the importance of the presence of the bituminous sub-ballast to conceive the construction and/or rehabilita…
High Performance Bi-Block Sleeper for Improvement the Performances of Ballasted Railway Track
2012
Abstract This article focuses on the performance of an innovative railway sleeper, recently patented in Italy and called “HP-BB” (High Performance Bi-Block sleeper), under different efficiency conditions of the ballast. The research is carried out through a comparative assessment of traditional mono- and bi-block sleepers, evaluating the lateral resistance of the single sleeper thought as independent of the other constituents of the track.
A New High-Efficiency Procedure for Aggregate Gradation Determination of the Railway Ballast by Means Image Recognition Method
2013
Abstract The mechanical characteristics of the railway superstructure are related to the properties of the ballast, and especially to the particle size distribution of its grains. Under the constant stress-strain of carriages, the ballast can deteriorate over time, and consequently it should properly be monitored for safety reasons. The equipment which currently monitors the railway superstructure (like the Italian diagnostic train Archimede) do not make any “quantitative” evaluation of the ballast. The aim of this paper is therefore to propose a new methodology for extracting railway ballast particle size distribution by means of the image processing technique. The procedure has been teste…
Digital image analysis technique for measuring railway track defects and ballast gradation
2018
Abstract In order to guarantee safety and driving comfort and to maintain an efficient railway infrastructure, the first step is to carefully monitor the track geometry and wear level of the materials constituting the superstructure. To that end diagnostic trains are widely used on main lines, in that they can detect several geometric track parameters and rail wear, but under no circumstances they can yet detect ballast gradation. Due to the practical implications for the planning of maintenance operations on the railway network, this article presents a “DIP” digital image processing technique for measuring the transverse profile and corrugations of the rails as well as ballast gradation. T…
De la régionalisation à la concurrence régulée. Analyse économique et juridique de la future organisation du transport ferroviaire régional de voyage…
2006
This paper deals with the introduction of competition for the market in French regional passenger railways. Following a double approach through economics and law, it discusses the proposals for a European regulation on public passenger transport services. In a first part, the paper explains the interest and limits of competition for the market concerning French regional rail services. After analyzing the German and Swedish cases, it proposes a way of introducing competition for the market in France. In a second part, structural reforms needed ex ante are analyzed: open access to stations, rolling stock availability and future of rail employees. For each reform, the theoretical analysis is f…
Increased Stability of Rubber-Modified Asphalt Mixtures to Swelling, Expansion and Rebound Effect during Post-Compaction
2017
The application of bituminous mixtures modified with rubber from scrap-tires require attention and care during mixing and compaction. Rubber modifies the properties because it reacts in the internal structure of bitumen at high temperatures changing the performance of the mixture (interaction process of solvents with binder-rubber aggregate). The main change is the increasing of the viscosity and elasticity of the binder due to the larger sizes of the rubber particles by dry process but, this positive effect is counteracted by short mixing times, compared to wet technology, and due to the transport processes, curing time and post-compaction of the mixtures. Therefore, negative effects as sw…

Transcutaneous transfer energy system designing for electronic pills
2015
Abstract This paper proposes a system capable of transcutaneous electric power delivery by means of a non-guided electromagnetic field, suitable for electronic pill technology to be continually powered without the limitations imposed by batteries. This system consists of a Class-E power oscillator, with a crystal-based feedback network to compensate automatically for changes in the operational frequency, multi-turn spiral coupled coils and a power recovery circuit providing a stable output voltage. The synthesis procedure is based on designing equations for optimizing the link efficiency. The proposed transcutaneous transfer energy system aims at transferring 100 mW and providing a stable 3…
Experimental analysis of a thermoactive underground railway station
2022
Little is known about the real energy potential of thermoactive underground infrastructures, such as railway stations, that can act as a heating/cooling provider for the built environment. This study presents the results of thermomechanical full-scale in situ testing and numerical analysis of a thermoactive underground train station. The thermal performance and related geostructural impact of a portion of the new underground energy infrastructure (UEI) installed at the Lancy-Bachet train station in Geneva (Switzerland) are analyzed. Heating and cooling tests simulating real operative geothermal conditions are considered. Particular attention is given to ((i) the monitored wall-tunnel hydrot…
