Is There a Paradox of Adaptation in Immigrant Children and Youth across Europe?: A Literature Review
2018
This review examines how well children of immigrants in Europe are doing in terms of educational, psychological, and behavioral outcomes. Based on theory and research in developmental, social and acculturation psychology fields, we explore the immigrant paradox (e.g., first-generation immigrant children show better adaptation in comparison to their native and second-generation counterparts) and migration morbidity (e.g., immigrants display less favorable outcomes than natives) in 102 studies conducted in 14 European countries. We conclude that theoretical assumptions of developmental (e.g., promoting context in families, schools, neighborhoods), social (e.g., intercultural behaviors and att…
Turning Migration Disadvantage into Educational Advantage. Autobiographies of Successful Students with an Immigrant Background
2018
The article focuses on unexpected pathways of successful students with an immigrant background, in order to investigate the implication of this phenomenon from a theoretical, methodological and empirical point of view. After a review of the main sociological studies on “immigrant optimism” towards educational success, I will reflect on biographical approach, particularly suitable to study this topic. A on-going research project based on the collection of educational autobiographies of successful immigrant-origin students, attending upper secondary schools in Northern Italy, is presented. Then, the story of Destiny, a 16 years-old girl with Moroccan origin, is used as a case study to explore…
El derecho penal de la imigración en Italia: un ejemplo de derecho penal del medio (Immigration Criminal Law in Italy: an example of the Criminal Law…
2015
Immigration Criminal Law should be more appropriately called “Criminal Law of the Irregular Immigrant”, since it shows to essentially be based on the criminalization of mere subjective “status”, rather than offensive managements of legal goods. Indeed, behind the protective shelter of an apparent balance between the need to legally protect human rights and the interest in controlling the migratory flow, the system of incriminations in this sector seems to be deeply imbalanced towards the punishment of types of perpetrators who are socially dangerous. It is namely a matter of model of criminal law very similar to the well known standard of “ Criminal Law of the Enemy”. The inspiring “ratio” …
Centros de internamiento de extranjeros. Principales denuncias y novedades legislativas
2014
Circumventing deadlock through venue-shopping: Why there is more than just talk in US immigration politics in times of economic crisis
2016
This article addresses the question of how the financial and economic crisis that hit the US in the late 2000s impacted immigration policies. We find that the crisis has not significantly changed dynamics. Instead, it has highlighted and aggravated persisting trends. Drawing on Kingdon’s multiple streams model and combining it with the notion of two-level games, we find that while the policy stream and the problem stream would call for both restrictive and liberalising changes, the political stream impedes change: The fact that Congress has been divided for a long time over Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) impedes any restrictive or liberalising changes. With problems resulting from c…
A survey on planning, expectations and factors influencing the stabilization process of migrating people in Palermo, Western Sicily
2010
Background. Europe constitutes a major pole of attraction for the migratory fluxes. The migrating population is made up of many different individuals, carrying different projects of life and expectations. The consistence of the phenomena, in few decades, will be responsible for deep changes in the demographic structure of the European population. The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to draw an identikit of migrating people and to evaluate those factors which may be considered important to positively influence the process of stabilization. Moreover, the research tried to evaluate the differences among those migrating people who have recently arrived, still considering this countr…
Giuseppina Terranova and Other Gruesome Stories: Cases of Female Italian-American murderers in the press from the 1890s to the 1910s
2019
Immigrant women during the period of mass migration received little public attention. However, when some of them became protagonists in sensational murder cases, they burst into the public sphere. Analyzing the representation of Josephine Terranova and other female Italian-American murderers in both the yellow press and the Italian-American press shows how some of these invisible women were able to assert themselves in the public sphere and achieve a degree of agency despite their tragic circumstances. These women, represented as degenerate and genetically inferior in the early coverage of their cases and trials, were, over time, essentially rehabilitated in the press as “proper” American s…
Immigration, decision making and teenagers. An exploratory research in Palermo.
2017
For immigrant teenagers, especially newcomers, inclusion in school represents an additional challenge to the already complex transition from childhood to adolescence. The article proposes an exploratory research piloted in Palermo in 2016/2017 on a sample of 200 immigrant teenagers from non-European countries who are already included in the Italian school system. The aim of the research is to describe and to identify four areas: linguistic, communicative and relational difficulties, the role of training in immigrant country, reflections on their school path, decision making.
