Vascular risk factors in Alzheimer’s disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment: population data from the Zabùt Aging Project
Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in older adults, accounting for about 60% of cases. However, autopsy studies suggested that mixed dementia, with vascular and neurodegenerative AD pathology, accounts for nearly 20% of dementia cases. Aims: Aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between isolated or clustered Vascular Risk Factors (VRFs)/diseases and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or AD. The study was conducted using a Sicilian population-based cohort dataset collected in low-educated, rural subjects, the Zabùt Aging Project (ZAP). The effect-modification by age, sex, education, genetic factor (APOE4 allele carrier), undernutrition,…

Being in the Past and Perform the Future in a Virtual World: VR Applications to Assess and Enhance Episodic and Prospective Memory in Normal and Path…
2020
The process of aging commonly features a gradual deterioration in cognitive performance and, in particular, the decline of memory. Despite the increased longevity of the world's population, the prevalence of neurodegenerative conditions, such as dementia, continues to be a major burden on public health, and consequently, the latest research has been focused on memory and aging. Currently, the failure of episodic and Prospective memory (PM) is one of the main complaints in the elderly, considered among the early symptoms of dementia. It is therefore increasingly important to define more clearly the boundaries between normal and pathological aging. Recently, researchers have begun to build an…
Accessible On-Line Floor Plans
2015
Better access to on-line information graphics is a pressing need for people who are blind or have severe vision impairment. We present a new model for accessible presentation of on-line information graphics and demonstrate its use for presenting floor plans. While floor plans are increasingly provided on-line, people who are blind are at best provided with only a high-level textual description. This makes it difficult for them to understand the spatial arrangement of the objects on the floor plan. Our new approach provides users with significantly better access to such plans. The users can automatically generate an accessible version of a floor plan from an on-line floor plan image quickly …
Translational Research in Neuroimmunology: Cognition
2021
Cognitive impairment affects up to 70% of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). It may already be present in the early stages of disease and impedes with a patient’s ability to maintain employment, take part in activities of daily life, and fully participate in society. Similar to the clinical heterogeneity of MS, there is great variability in cognitive symptoms among patients. Given the impact of such deficits on everyday functioning, an increasing interest in diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment has arisen. This chapter aims to present an overview of those cognitive domains most commonly affected in MS, common approaches to assess the respective cognitive functions as well as …

Validity of the Play Assessment for Group Settings: An evaluation of differential item functioning between children with specific language impairment…
2011
Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity evidence based on internal structure of the Play Assessment for Group Settings (PAGS). Methods: The study was conducted in day care centres by comparing observations of the free play performance of two groups of children: those with specific language impairments (SLIs) (n = 55) and those with typical language development (n = 55). The participating children were 3 to 6.5 years of age. Data were subjected to many-faceted Rasch analyses and differential item functioning analysis was conducted to identify possible group-specific items in the PAGS. The effect of differentially functioning items on mean play performance measurements b…
