Testing Three Theories of Cognitive Dysfunction in Problem Alcohol Use
2014
- Objectives : many hypotheses concerning the cognitive functions affected by chronic alcoholism have been advanced. The aim of this study was to test cognitive performance in a sample of alcoholics and to examine results comparing three different models: the frontal lobe hypothesis, the lateralization hypothesis and the diffuse brain hypothesis. - Methods : 51 patients who refer to alcoholism service have been included in this study. Cognitive functions were assessed by trained psychologist with a specific neuropsychological battery. -Results : our results show a ranking of impairment degrees in different cognitive functions and different influence of clinical features. In our sample the f…
Cognitive impairment associated with chronic lead exposure in adults
2018
Abstract Lead (Pb) exposure interferes with many biochemical events present in cells of the central nervous system (neurons and astrocytes) and it can produce a wide spectrum of alterations including cognitive impairment. The review summarizes the main cognitive alterations induced by chronic Pb exposure in adults/older individuals. We have focused on the current state of knowledge concerning the most vulnerable brain areas to Pb exposure that accompanied by the long-lasting neurological effects of Pb in cognitive functions. We tried to correlate the cognitive deficits induced by Pb exposure in animal models during adulthood with those reported in humans. The great interest in whether expos…

Physical activity and exercise in mild cognitive impairment and dementia::an umbrella review of intervention and observational studies
2020
Objectives:\ud \ud The aim of this umbrella review was to determine the effect of physical activity/exercise on improving cognitive and noncognitive outcomes in people with MCI (mild cognitive impairment) and dementia.\ud \ud Design:\ud \ud Umbrella review of systematic reviews (SR), with or without meta-analyses (MAs), of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies.\ud \ud Settings and Participants:\ud \ud People with MCI or dementia, confirmed through validated assessment measures. Any form of physical activity/exercise was included. As controls, we included participants not following any prespecified physical activity/exercise intervention or following the same standard…
Cognitive Impairment in Multiple Sclerosis Is Reflected by Increased Susceptibility to the Sound-Induced Flash Illusion
2019
Objective: To determine whether the performance of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients in the sound-induced flash illusion (SiFi), a multisensory perceptual illusion, would reflect their cognitive impairment. Methods: We performed the SiFi task as well as an extensive neuropsychological testing in 95 subjects [39 patients with relapse-remitting MS (RRMS), 16 subjects with progressive multiple sclerosis (PMS) and 40 healthy control subjects (HC)].Results: MS patients reported more frequently the multisensory SiFi than HC. In contrast, there were no group differences in the control conditions. Essentially, patients with progressive type of MS continued to perceive the illusion at stimulus onset a…
