Coronary heart disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in older adults, despite improved survival and declining mortality. Prevalence in and impact of heart disease on elderly people, increasing risk factors, and the underlying physiologic changes of aging are briefly reviewed. High prevalence of clinical and subclinical heart disease provides a basis for considering opportunities for prevention and follow-up. This article focuses on recently developed noninvasive techniques, such as cardiac multislice CT and cardiac MR imaging.

Histamine produces concentration-dependent contractions of lung parenchyma strips obtained from normal and sensitized guinea-pigs. The responsiveness of the sensitized lung strips to histamine was significantly increased compared to normal tissues. Clemizole (0.1 microM) was equally effective as an H1-antagonist in normal (dose-ratio 9.12) and sensitized (dose-ratio 9.77) tissues. The concentration-response curves to histamine were displaced to the left by cimetidine (0.1 microM to 0.1 mM) with similar dose-ratios in normal and sensitized tissues. Severe stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is usually treated by the implant of artificial sphincter positioned around bulbar urethra. AdVance sling is a functional, non-obstructive, anti-incontinence device that showed good results especially for mild and moderate SUI. We present our experience with AdVance sling in 7 patients with severe SUI unfit for artificial sphincter. Our results, after a follow-up of more than 6 months, showed a continence rate of 28% and an improvement rate of 43%, while 2 patients did not show any benefit.
