A rigorous and efficient full-wave analysis of uniform bends in rectangular waveguide under arbitrary incidence
2003
In this paper, a rigorous full-wave analysis of uniform bends in rectangular waveguides is performed. An accurate and efficient method-of-moments solution combined with the generalized-admittance-matrix (GAM) formulation is proposed in order to achieve a full-wave characterization of the analyzed structures. This full-wave modal solution turns out to be necessary for modeling complex microwave devices involving an arbitrary number of discontinuities between curved and straight waveguides, where all the modes of the involved guides are excited. The key feature of the presented method lies in the GAM representation of single and cascaded curved E- and H-plane uniform bends, which allows the c…
Elastic scattering studies of 16C at 50 MeV/A on proton and deuteron targets with the CHIMERA multidetector at INFN-LNS
2012
At the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania (Italy), light radioactive ion beams have been produced through the In Flight Fragmentation method, using 18O and 13C at 55 MeV/A as primary beams impinging on a 9Be production target. Elastic scattering angular distributions of 16C+p and 16C+d at 50 MeV/A, 10Be+p at 56 MeV/A and 13B+d at 52 MeV/A systems were measured by using the CHIMERA (Charge Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array) multidetector and kinematical coincidence technique. The experimental data are fitted by using the optical model. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
Incidence of mandibular osteoradionecrosis (MORN) after intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) versus 3D conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT): A systemat…
2022
Background: Analyze the incidence of MORN after head and neck radiotherapy by two novel irradiation techniques. 3DCRT and IMRT and compare the success rates of distinct authors. Material and Methods: An electronic search in Pubmed (MEDLINE), Ovid. Google Scholar and Cochrane Library (Wiley). databases was conducted with the key words Radiotherapy, Conformal[Mesh] OR Radiotherapy. Intensity-Modulated[Mesh]) AND Osteoradionecrosis[Mesh] for all databases. The inclusion criteria randomized controlled trials (RCT), as well as prospective and retrospective cohort studies published in English; MORN patients treated with 3D-CRT y IMRT. Results: 27 articles were selected from 194 initially found. 1…
Incidence of Diabetes Following Ramipril or Rosiglitazone Withdrawal
2011
OBJECTIVE To examine the impact of withdrawing rosiglitazone and ramipril medication on diabetes incidence after closeout of the Diabetes REduction Assessment with ramipril and rosiglitazone Medication (DREAM) trial. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The 3,366 DREAM subjects at trial end who had not developed diabetes while taking double-blind study medication were transferred to single-blind placebo for 2 to 3 months before undergoing an oral glucose tolerance test. Glycemic status was analyzed for the trial plus washout period and for the washout period alone. RESULTS Following median (interquartile range) 71 (63–86) days drug withdrawal, overall glycemic status remained modestly improved in t…
Visit-to-visit blood pressure variability and renal outcomes: results from ONTARGET and TRANSCEND trials.
2020
AIMS There is conflicting evidence on whether in treated hypertensive patients the risk of renal outcomes is associated with visit-to-visit SBP variability. Furthermore, limited evidence is available on how important is SBP variability for prediction of renal outcomes compared with on-treatment mean SBP. We addressed these issues in 28 790 participants of the Ongoing Treatment Alone and in combination with Ramipril Global End point Trial and Telmisartan Randomized Assessment Study in ace iNtolerant Subjects with Cardiovascular Disease trials. METHODS AND RESULTS SBP variability was expressed as the coefficient of variation of the mean with which it showed no relationship. SBP variability an…
Rektummelanome – Stellenwert der modernen Therapie
2008
Rectal melanoma is a rare disease. There is much controversy concerning cause, incidence and treatment of the disease and the spreading of recurrence. In this article, we discuss actual aspects of diagnostic, therapy and prognosis on the basis of our series of seven patients as well as a literature review. The surgical therapy in the form of local tumour excision with a disease-free margin of up to 1-2 cm is the initial therapeutic modality of choice. Large tumours that obviously could not be removed in sano should be treated with a multimodal concept. Such tumours should be treated by a combination of neoadjuvant radiation and chemotherapy for down-staging with subsequent local excision (L…
Socio-Demographic Factors Involved in a Low-Incidence Phase of SARS-CoV-2 Spread in Sicily, Italy
2021
Background: The present study analysed SARS-CoV-2 cases observed in Sicily and investigated social determinants that could have an impact on the virus spread. Methods: SARS-CoV-2 cases observed among Sicilian residents between the 1 February 2020 and 15 October 2020 have been included in the analyses. Age, sex, date of infection detection, residency, clinical outcomes, and exposure route have been evaluated. Each case has been linked to the census section of residency and its socio-demographic data. Results: A total of 10,114 patients (202.3 cases per 100,000 residents
Measuring the Regional Incidence of Taxes and Public Expenditure: The Available Methodology and its Limitations
2014
This article reviews the basic methodology used to estimate the regional incidence of taxes and public expenditure, which we call the fiscal incidence approach, and compares it with the cash flow approach, which measures tax revenues and expenditures in terms of the associated monetary cash flows. In this context, it considers critically the particular version of the cash flow approach used in Spain. The article also looks at the different ways in which economists have tried to decompose fiscal balances into a structural or distributive component and a cyclical component, and critically reviews present practices.
Cancer incidence and mortality trends from 2003 to 2014 in Italy.
2019
Objective: To evaluate short-term (2003–2014) cancer incidence and mortality trends in Italy. Methods: Italian Cancer Registries data, available in the AIRTUM database, from 17 out of 20 regions were used. The number of incident cases and deaths were estimated for those registries and those years with incomplete information. Age-standardized rates, overall and stratified by geographic area, region, sex, cancer site, and major age group, were computed. Time trends were expressed as annual percent change of rates. Results: In Italy, among males, incidence rates for all cancers showed during 2003–2014, a significant decrease (−0.9%/year), with stronger reductions in the northwest (−1.3%/year) …
Survival of 86,690 patients with thyroid cancer: A population-based study in 29 European countries from EUROCARE-5
2017
Background: Incidence rates of thyroid cancer (TC) increased in several countries during the last 30 years, while mortality rates remained unchanged, raising important questions for treatment and follow-up of TC patients. This study updates population-based estimates of relative survival (RS) after TC diagnosis in Europe by sex, country, age, period and histology. Methods: Data from 87 cancer registries in 29 countries were extracted from the EUROCARE-5 dataset. One-and 5-year RS were estimated using the cohort approach for 86,690 adult TC patients diagnosed in 2000-2007 and followed-up to 12/31/2008. RS trends in 1999-2007 and 10-year RS in 2005-2007 were estimated using the period approach…
