Endemic hepatitis C virus infection in a Sicilian town: Further evidence for iatrogenic transmission
2002
The prevalence of and risk factors for HCV and HBV infections in the general population and the predictive value of ALT screening in identifying anti-HCV positive subjects have been evaluated in a small Sicilian town. A random 1:4 sampling from the census of the general population was performed. Anti-HCV, HCV-RNA, HCV genotype, HBsAg, and anti-HBc were tested. The linkage between HCV infection and potential risk factors was evaluated by multiple logistic regression analysis. Among 721 subjects studied, 75 (10.4%) were anti-HCV positive. The HCV infection rate increased from 0.4% in subjects 10–29 years of age to 34% in those > 60 years of age. Among the 75 anti-HCV positive subjects, 66.7% …
An outbreak of HBV and HCV infection in a paediatric oncology ward: Epidemiological investigations and prevention of further spread
2003
Hospital-acquired hepatitis B (HBV) and C virus (HCV) infections continue to occur despite increased awareness of this problem among the medical community. One hundred six patients were infected in a haematology oncology ward for children, over the time period 1996 to 2000. Serum samples from 45 such patients and 3 from infected medical personnel were used for nucleic acid amplification. HBV core, as well as HCV core and hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) nucleotide sequences, were analysed by phylogenetic tree analysis, in order to characterise the epidemiological pattern of viral transmission on the ward. Samples from 32 patients were positive for HBV-DNA or HCV-RNA by PCR. Ten patients were p…
Coincidence of a high-fluence blazar outburst with a PeV-energy neutrino event
2016
The discovery of extraterrestrial very-high-energy neutrinos by the IceCube collaboration has launched a quest for the identification of their astrophysical sources. Gamma-ray blazars have been predicted to yield a cumulative neutrino signal exceeding the atmospheric background above energies of 100 TeV, assuming that both the neutrinos and the gamma-ray photons are produced by accelerated protons in relativistic jets. Since the background spectrum falls steeply with increasing energy, the individual events with the clearest signature of being of an extraterrestrial origin are those at PeV energies. Inside the large positional-uncertainty fields of the first two PeV neutrinos detected by Ic…

High-brilliance double-stage soft x-ray laser pumped by multiple pulses applied in grazing incidence
2014
A new compact scheme for a double-stage seeded x-ray laser is demonstrated. This laser is offering greatly improved beam quality and brilliance making it a useful tool for applications.
Multinucleon transfer reactions: an overview of recent results
2012
Large acceptance magnetic spectrometers, such as PRISMA installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, gave a further boost to the renewed interest for multinucleon transfer reactions in the last decade. The large solid angles of these devices and the high resolving powers of their detection systems allowed to investigate the transfer process around and well below the Coulomb barrier and to perform nuclear structure studies in several mass regions of the nuclide chart when coupled with large γ-ray arrays such as CLARA. Selected results obtained with the PRISMA-CLARA set-up in odd argon isotopes populated by using the multinucleon transfer process and in sub- barrier transfer measurements are…
Decline in hospitalization rates for herpes zoster in Italy (2003-2018): reduction in the burden of disease or changing of hospitalization criteria?
2022
Background: Herpes Zoster (HZ) is a very demanding disease caused by the reactivation of latent Varicella Zoster Virus. The main aim of this study was to estimate the burden of the HZ hospitalizations in Italy from 2003 to 2018 evaluating temporal trends. Methods: Retrospective population-based study analyzing Hospital Discharge Records. Hospitalization records reporting the ICD-9 CM 053.X code in the principal diagnosis or in any of the five secondary diagnoses were considered as cases. Trends of hospitalization rates have been evaluated by Joinpoint analyses. Results: Overall, 99,036 patients were hospitalized with HZ in the 16-year period of the study, and 83,720 (84.5%) of these patient…
An Efficient Algorithm for Helly Property Recognition in a Linear Hypergraph
2001
International audience; In this article we characterize bipartite graphs whose associated neighborhood hypergraphs have the Helly property. We examine incidence graphs both hypergraphs and linear hypergraphs and we give a polynomial algorithm to recognize if a linear hypergraph has the Helly property.
Kariesa izplatība, kas novērtēta ar ICDAS II (starptautiskā kariesa noteikšanas un novērtēšanas sistēma), pirmsskolas vecuma bērniem Latvijā
2019
Ievads Zobu kariess ir plaši izplatīta multifaktoriāla slimība, kas ietekmē visu populāciju, tomēr pieejami maz datu par zobu kariesa prevalenci Latvijas populācijā. Šis šķērsgriezuma pētījums tika veikts 2018.gadā Rīgas apkaimē, lai novērtētu kariesa prevalenci pirmsskolas vecuma bērniem. Šī pilotpētījuma galvenie mērķi bija, pirmkārt, izpētīt kariesa prevalenci starp 2-6 gadus veciem bērniem Latvijas bērnudārzā, pielietojot ICDAS II; otrkārt, salīdzināt ICDAS II kritērijus ar DMF indeksu, lai izvērtētu kariesa prevalenci. Metodes Kopumā tika izmeklēti 176 Latvijas bērnudārza bērni vecumā no 2 līdz 6 gadiem. Zobu kariesu izvērtēja, lietojot ICDAS II kritērijus. Bērni tika iedalīti 2 gadu, …
What drives the higher incidence of psychosis in London compared to Palermo?
2016
Background: Incidence of psychosis seems to be lower in Italy than in other European countries (Tansella et al. 1991; Lasalvia et al. 2012, Tarricone et al. 2012); however there are no studies comparing the incidence of psychotic disorder in Northern and Southern Europe. Methods: Incidence and socio-demographic data on all psychotic patients presenting for the first time to the mental health services of Palermo were collected over a period of three years. Palermo incidence rates were compared to South London rates obtained from the AESOP study (Kirkbride et al 2006). South London rates were reanalyzed excluding people aged 16-17 years and substance related psychoses. Second generation migra…
