Effect of bone loss on the fracture resistance of narrow dental implants after implantoplasty. An in vitro study

2021

Background Implantoplasty (IP) involves polishing of the exposed surface of implants affected by peri-implantitis (PI). A study was made to determine whether the degree of bone loss influences the fracture resistance of implants with or without IP. Material and Methods An in vitro study was carried out on 32 narrow (3.5 mm) dental implants with a rough surface and external hexagonal connection. Implantoplasty was performed in half of the implants of the sample. Both the IP and control implants were divided into two subgroups according to the amount of bone loss (3 mm or 7.5 mm). Standardized radiographic assessment of implant width was performed using specific software. The main outcome var…

Clinical virology of cytomegalovirus infection following hematopoietic transplantation

2010

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes significant morbidity and mortality in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients. The incidence of early CMV disease has been dramatically reduced by use of preemptive therapeutic strategies. Nevertheless, a trend toward a later appearance of CMV disease is being increasingly recognized. Currently, quantitative real-time PCR assays are the first-line choice for monitoring active CMV infection. However, no threshold DNAemia levels for triggering the initiation of preemptive therapy have been clinically validated in large studies. Although more time limited than universal prophylaxis, preemptive therapy strategies may also result in over treatment. Combined viro…

P046 Deconstructing HLA-C mismatch in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

2016

Contrary to other HLA loci, allele vs antigen mismatches in HLA-C appear to differentially impact HSCT outcome. Aim of this study was to investigate the independent role of other factors characterizing a patient’s HLA-C non-shared allele, in HSCT outcome as well as their distribution in allele vs antigen mismatched cases. 288 9/10 HLA-C mismatched unrelated transplant pairs, were additionally genotyped by sequence based typing for rs9264942(C/T) and rs67384697(ins/del), which are considered surrogate markers of HLA-C expression levels. A proxy MFI model as previously described (Petersdorf et al., Blood 2014), was also implemented in the analysis. All patient non-shared alleles were characte…

Dyslipidemia management with medical nutrition therapy: current status and perspectives

2013

In Italy, patients with dyslipidennia account for 15-20% of the adult population with major healthcare and socio-economic impact. According to the ESC/EAS guidelines for the management of dyslipidemias, desirable cholesterol and triglyceride levels can be achieved with a synergy between drug treatment and adequate diet therapy. However, what diets should be adopted? In this review article, different types of dietary treatments are compared, with a special focus on diet education. The new scientific frontier of nutrigenetics is also discussed.

Enhancement of cranial nerves in Lyme neuroborreliosis: incidence and correlation with clinical symptoms and prognosis

2022

Abstract Purpose Symptoms of cranial neuritis are a common presentation of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB). Imaging studies are scarce and report contradictory low prevalence of enhancement compared to clinical studies of cranial neuropathy. We hypothesized that MRI enhancement of cranial nerves in LNB is underreported, and aimed to assess the prevalence and clinical impact of cranial nerve enhancement in early LNB. Methods In this prospective, longitudinal cohort study, 69 patients with acute LNB were examined with MRI of the brain. Enhancement of cranial nerves III–XII was rated. MRI enhancement was correlated to clinical findings of neuropathy in the acute phase and after 6 months. Results T…

Nieru audzēju gadījumi Latvijā laika posmā no 1990.-2015. gadam

2017

Nieru šūnu karcinoma sastāda 80-85% [Michael B atkins et al, 2016] no visām nieru malignitātēm, neskatoties uz diagnostikas priekšrocībam aptuveni 20-30% gadījumos pacientam tiek atklāta metastātiskā slimība [Athar U, et al 2008].

2013

[EN] According to Prosecutor¿s Office of the Minor, the accusation interposed by mothers and/or fathers victims by theirs children, along 2007 were 2603, in 2008 amounted 4.211, in 2009 there were 5.209 and in 2010 there were 8.000 accusations. Suede this worrying increase, the principal aim of our article is to check the scientific international and national documentation, from 1957 until the year 2010 that analyses the phenomenon of the adolescent violence against parents, to achieve an approximation to its keys that there allows us the comprehension and analysis of this serious familiar problem. For it we will analyse: (a) the importance of this crime by means of criminological mediators…

A Cross-Sectional Study on the Prevalence and Incidence of Pressure Ulcers in an Italian University Hospital-Umbria Region

2020

Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence and incidence of pressure ulcers (PUs) in patients hospitalized in a University Hospital in central Italy. Methods: We carried out a prevalence and incidence study on PUs and an additional prevalence estimate of PUs was also produced ten days after the first assessment. All data were explored by descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test and a multivariate analysis. Results: The prevalence of pressure ulcers was of 6,5%, while it increased to 9,9% at the second assessment ten days after the first measurement. Prevalence was statistically significant and increased with the age of inpatients (p=0,004) and was correlated to …

Moderate ovarian stimulation does not increase the incidence of human embryo chromosomal abnormalities in in vitro fertilization cycles.

2012

A high chromosomal abnormalities rate has been observed in human embryos derived from in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. The real incidence in natural cycles has been poorly studied, so whether this frequency may be induced by external factors, such as use of gonadotropins for ovarian stimulation, remains unknown. We conducted a prospective cohort study in a University-affiliated private infertility clinic with a comparison between unstimulated and stimulated ovarian cycles in the same women. Preimplantation genetic screening by fluorescence in situ hybridization was performed in all viable d 3 embryos. The primary objective was to compare the incidence of embryo chromosomal abnormaliti…

The impact of cigarette smoking on the health of descendants

2012

This paper presents a review of the literature on the effects of cigarette smoking on the health of descendants and the possible mechanisms that lead to them. The evidence of the effects of prenatal cigarette smoke exposure on neonatal morbidity is clear. A number of birth defects have their incidence raised by maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy. Prenatal smoke exposure also increases the risk of infant irritability, inattention, decreased response to inanimate auditory stimuli and hypertonia. In addition, the prevalence of obesity in preschool children is higher if the mother smoked during pregnancy, as well as the presence of male or female subfertility/infertility in adult life.…
