Basic school teachers' attitudes towards inclusive education in Ghana

2011

ABSTRACT Attitudes towards Inclusive Education are extremely complex and vary from one teacher to another. This is because traditionally, children with Special Education Needs (SEN) have been segregated into separate learning environments. This practice is now being questioned by teachers who believe it is an infringement of the rights of children with SEN. The proponents of Inclusive Education (IE) are of the opinion that including students with disabilities into mainstream classrooms would maximise their learning experiences. The present study examined the attitudes of basic school teachers in mainstream classrooms towards Inclusive Education in Ghana. It also assessed the best learning e…

Quality of Inclusive Educational System for Work with Students with Autism Different Needs in Italy

2015

The need for realization of inclusive education, which is the basis of a sustainable education, will require new challenges in the Education System. The system used in Italy can be used as an example. Italy passed avant-garde laws concerning the integration and inclusion of special needs students into the general school system already more than thirty years ago, in the 1970s. However, even after all this time and experience, there are still unresolved problems, which testifies to the complexities of the matter. This research offers an insight into the quality of the existing Italian inclusive education system specifically in relation to students with autism. Thereby it hopes to provide educ…

Helping Low Achievers to Succeed in Tertiary Education: Explicit Teaching of Academic Literacy as a Way to Positive Educational Experiences

2016

Since tertiary schools in Poland have started admitting all low-achieving students who are willing to continue their education, there is an urgent need to help the low-achievers, who have become a majority in many classes, to stay and succeed in college. Academic teachers are facing the challenge of how to adapt their teaching to suit the needs of these students. The paper looks for a way to teach an introductory linguistics course to students of English whose academic skills are insufficient for tertiary study, but the discussion is relevant to teaching all introductory academic courses. It addresses the issue of how to integrate content instruction with explicit teaching of academic liter…

The 21st Century Reforms (Re)Shaping the Education Policy of Inclusive and Special Education in Finland

2021

In recent decades, an essential global aim of the reforms of special education has been the promotion of inclusive education. This article discusses the implementation of reforms with a focus on tiered support systems in the context of Finnish comprehensive school education. Based on earlier literature, legislation, and administrative documents, we provide a background for Finnish education policy and special education reforms. We discuss the processes leading to these reforms and the reforms themselves. In additio…

Intercultural Dialogue in the European Education Policies : A Conceptual Approach

2020

This open access book analyses intercultural dialogue as a concept, policy and ideal in European education policy documentation. The core European transnational organizatons – the Council of Europe and the European Union – have actively promoted policies to engender inclusive societies and respond to challenges that diversification may entail. This book, in turn, offers suggestions for improving education policies in super-diversified Europe and beyond, where there is an increasing need for cultural understanding and constructive dialogue. The authors utilize concept analysis to reveal how these organizations seek to deal with dialogue between cultures, as well as weight given to cultural d…

Tensions in the New Millennium : Inclusion Ideology and Education Policy in the Finnish Comprehensive School

2017

This article examines the discrepancy between the ideology of inclusive education and the national education policy in the Finnish comprehensive school education. The study covers twenty years and is based on observations that indicate that the change in comprehensive school education, grounded in inclusive education ideals, has been slow. This has been the case, even though Finnish education policy has, on principle, committed to many international statements that promote inclusion ideology. The data consists primarily of statistics indicating the number of students in special education and national and international research on the subject. It confirms our supposition, but also the fact t…
