Aksjologiczne podstawy samorządu terytorialnego

2021

JUDGE IMPARTIALITY IN COMPREHENSIVE JUDICIAL DEVELOPMENT

2012

General human rights instruments guarantee the right to a fair trial before independent and impartial court. International and national legislation explicitly provides that the court should be impartial. But how can we understand that the court is impartial? Should there be an objective decision or should there be impartial decision-making process? Nowadays we often think about how it is possible to ensure judicial impartiality. How an impartial court may exist in democratic society, and whether a society should have any criteria of judicial impartiality to ensure that the public trusts the courts and judges. The aim of the court’s decision is not only to achieve an equitable settlement of …

Gait asymmetry, ankle spasticity, and depression as independent predictors of falls in ambulatory stroke patients

2017

Background Falls are the leading cause of injury in stroke patients. However, the cause of a fall is complicated, and several types of risk factors are involved. Therefore, a comprehensive model to predict falls with high sensitivity and specificity is needed. Methods This study was a prospective study of 112 inpatients in a rehabilitation ward with follow-up interviews in patients’ homes. Evaluations were performed 1 month after stroke and included the following factors: (1) status of cognition, depression, fear of fall and limb spasticity; (2) functional assessments [walking velocity and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM)]; and (3) objective, computerized gait and balance analyses.…

A combined therapy for limb apraxia and related anosognosia.

2019

Left hemisphere stroke frequently leads to limb apraxia, a disorder that has been reported to impact independence in daily life and rehabilitation success. Nonetheless, there is a shortcoming in research and availability of applicable trainings. Further, to date, anosognosia for limb apraxia has largely been neglected. Therefore, we developed a Naturalistic Action Therapy that trains object selection and application with an errorless learning approach and which includes supported self-evaluation. The current study presents the results of two stroke patients participating in the training. The procedure entailed two baseline and one post-training sessions including standardized limb apraxia a…

Frail elderly with and without cognitive impairment at the end of life: Their emotional state and the wellbeing of their family caregivers.

2017

Abstract Purpose of the study (1) To identify the main predictors of the emotional state of the frail elderly at the end-of-life and that of their primary family caregivers, taking into consideration the presence/absence of significant cognitive impairment in the patient and (2) to analyse the relationship between the emotional state of the patient and that of their primary family caregiver. Methods Our study is cross-sectional. 85 frail elderly patients at the end-of-life and their primary family caregivers participated. Information on the following aspects was collected: (1) From the patients: Socio-demographics, Functional independence, and Cognitive and Emotional state; (2) From the car…

Older persons with signs of frailty in a home-based physical exercise intervention : baseline characteristics of an RCT

2019

Background Increasing the level of physical activity among persons with signs of frailty improves physical functioning. There is a lack of long-term supervised physical exercise intervention studies including a validated definition of frailty. Aims To present baseline characteristics of persons with signs of frailty participating in a randomized long-term home-based physical exercise trial (HIPFRA), and to study associations between the severity of frailty, functional independence and health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL). Methods Three hundred persons, ≥ 65 years old and with signs of frailty (assessed by Fried´s phenotype criteria) were recruited from South Karelia, Finland and randomize…

Synergy of features enables detection of texture defined figures

2006

Traditional theories of early visual processing suggest that elementary visual features are handled in parallel by independent neural pathways. We studied the interaction of orientation and spatial frequency in the discrimination of Gabor random fields. Target textures differed from reference textures either in mean feature value, showing an edge-like transition between both textures (edge defined), or in the degree of feature homogeneity with smooth transitions (region defined). Irrespective of the kind of texture definition, we found strong cue summation for targets defined by both cues simultaneously, provided two conditions were fulfilled. First, they were barely discriminable when defi…

Sex Differences in Feedback: Effects on Rod-and-Frame Performance

1979

It has been demonstrated that feedback is effective in changing rod-and-frame performance for women if given the opportunity to adjust the rod to the vertical repeatedly from the same starting position. It is also shown that the significant difference between males and females in the Rod-and-frame Test is carried by the large difference in the initial tilting position.

Life situation and identity among single older home-living people: A phenomenologicalhermeneutic study

2012

Being able to continue living in their own home as long as possible is the general preference for many older people, and this is also in line with the public policy in the Nordic countries. The aim of this study was to elucidate the meaning of self-care and health for perception of life situation and identity among single-living older individuals in rural areas in southern Norway. Eleven older persons with a mean age of 78 years were interviewed and encouraged to narrate their self-care and health experiences. The interviews were audio taped, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a phenomenological hermeneutic method inspired by the philosophy of Ricoeur. The findings are presented as a n…

The Italian law on assisted reproduction: a view from Spain

2006

Despite the pessimistic concerns about the outcome of assisted reproduction in Italy after the application of the new law, initial reports show similar pregnancy rates. However, with increasing numbers, the deleterious effect of such a restrictive law will show up. Moreover, it may seriously affect the scientific production of Italian groups, which may be forced to migrate to other countries to maintain their independence and scientific freedom.
