Robust Conditional Independence maps of single-voxel Magnetic Resonance Spectra to elucidate associations between brain tumours and metabolites.

2020

The aim of the paper is two-fold. First, we show that structure finding with the PC algorithm can be inherently unstable and requires further operational constraints in order to consistently obtain models that are faithful to the data. We propose a methodology to stabilise the structure finding process, minimising both false positive and false negative error rates. This is demonstrated with synthetic data. Second, to apply the proposed structure finding methodology to a data set comprising single-voxel Magnetic Resonance Spectra of normal brain and three classes of brain tumours, to elucidate the associations between brain tumour types and a range of observed metabolites that are known to b…

Emotional Distress of Patients at End-of-Life and Their Caregivers: Interrelation and Predictors

2018

Background: Patients at the end of life and their families experience a strong emotional impact. The well-being of these patients and that of their family caregiver are related. Aim: To study the variables related with the emotional well-being of patients with and without cognitive impairment at the end of life and that of their primary family caregivers. Design: Cross- sectional study. Participants: Data was collected from 202 patients at the end of life with different diagnosis (COPD, cancer, and frail elderly) as well as from their respective 202 primary family caregivers. Results: Structural equation models indicated that the emotional state of the patients was best predicted by their f…

A matter of perspective : the cognitive style Field Independence - dependence, and why it matters

2016

The corporate image of auditors in a developing audit market within the EU: the case of Spain

2004

This paper examines the images of audit firms in Spain. Spain offers a valuable research context in that it is a relatively new audit market and one where the top company audits are not totally dominated by the large multinational audit firms, allowing for a comparison of the images of such firms against those associated with smaller, national audit firms. The findings of this survey are pertinent given the current level of debate internationally over the role, regulation and quality of auditing services and concerns over the potential impact of recent corporate scandals on auditor reputation. Our study shows that the images of audit firms in Spain have differed on a number of dimensions, m…

A Chronology of Financial Crises for Norway

2010

The paper offers a chronology of financial crises in Norway from her independence in 1814 till present times. Firstly, business cycles, covering almost two hundred years of economic history are mapped. These reveal years of crises in the real economy. These seem to coincide with most of the major financial crises. Secondly, the paper the financial crises are described chronologically. Thirdly, the paper investigates key patterns in credit and money volumes. It concludes that major financial crises typically took place after substantial money and credit expansion causing financial instability, loss of long term equilibriums, overheating and bubbles followed by severe meltdowns in the economy.

Financial Behaviour Under Economic Strain in Different Age Groups: Predictors and Change Across 20 Years

2021

AbstractThe present study examined the multiple micro- and macro-level factors that affect individuals’ financial behaviour under economic strain. The following sociodemographic and economic factors that predict financial behaviour were analysed: age group, year of data gathering, and attitudes towards consumption (economical, deprived, and hedonistic). Subjective financial situations and demographic characteristics were controlled for. Finnish time series data that consisted of five cross-sectional nationally representative surveys were used (n = 10 043). The analyses revealed four types of financial behaviour: cutting expenses, borrowing, increasing income, and gambling. Young adults aged…

A methodology for assessing the effect of correlations among muscle synergy activations on task-discriminating information

2013

Delis, Ioannis | Berret, Bastien | Pozzo, Thierry | Panzeri, Stefano; International audience; ''Muscle synergies have been hypothesized to be the building blocks used by the central nervous system to generate movement. According to this hypothesis, the accomplishment of various motor tasks relies on the ability of the motor system to recruit a small set of synergies on a single-trial basis and combine them in a task-dependent manner. It is conceivable that this requires a fine tuning of the trial-to-trial relationships between the synergy activations. Here we develop an analytical methodology to address the nature and functional role of trial-to-trial correlations between synergy activation…

‘Independence is not given, it is taken’: the Ivorian cinquantenaire and competing history/ies of independence

2013

This article explores competing histories of independence in Cote d'Ivoire. The 2010 commemoration of fifty years of independence led to competing histories about how and if the nation achieved independence in 1960. The postelectoral crisis of 2010–2011 that followed soon afterwards has been interpreted by supporters of the outgoing president Laurent Gbagbo as an attempt by France and the international community to re-colonise Cote d'Ivoire. The article asks how different versions of this history are connected to different political projects and how they have changed through time. The article will analyse these processes of meaning-making in a historiology of Ivorian independence, thus cont…

Kwestia niemiecka w publicystyce emigracyjnej Ligi Niepodległości Polski po II wojnie światowej

2019

The Polish Independence League (PIL) was a political representation of Piłsudski’s followers in exile. The article presents the position of the PIL regarding the German issue after World War II. Michał Grażyński was the most outstanding expert on German issues in the ranks of Piłsudski’s followers. Before World War II, he was a long-term voivode of Silesia and a well-known politician, publicist and the president of the PIL in exile. Piłsudski’s followers repeatedly demanded that Western governments recognise the border on the Odra and Nysa Łużycka Rivers. They advocated that the western territories belong to Poland by referring to security considerations and using economic and historical ar…

Using the Updated EWGSOP2 Definition in Diagnosing Sarcopenia in Spanish Older Adults : Clinical Approach

2021

Recently the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) has updated diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia, which consist of one or more measures of muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance, plus an initial screening test called SARC-F. The main objective was to compare the number of cases of sarcopenia, using the different measurements and screening options. A cross-sectional study was conducted on Spanish older adults (n = 272, 72% women). Combining the different measures proposed by the steps described in the EWGSOP2 algorithm, 12 options were obtained (A–L). These options were studied in each of the three models: (1) using SARC-F as initial screening
