Recent Developments in Heterogeneous Photoreactor Modelling

1991

A selection of recently proposed heterogeneous photoreactors is presented. In some cases efforts have been made for the formulation of models able to describe the photoreactor behaviour with regard to the absorption of radiation. Examples of proposals of both novel photoreactor and models are critically reviewed.

DFT and experimental studies on structure and spectroscopic parameters of 3,6-diiodo-9-ethyl-9H-carbazole

2015

The first report on crystal and molecular structure of 3,6-diiodo-9-ethyl-9H-carbazole is presented. Experimental room-temperature X-ray and 13C chemical shift studies were supported by advanced theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT). The 13C nuclear magnetic shieldings were predicted at the non-relativistic and relativistic level of theory using the zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA). Theoretical relativistic calculations of chemical shifts of carbons C3 and C6, directly bonded to iodine atoms, produced a reasonable agreement with experiment (initial deviation from experiment of 44.3 dropped to 4.25 ppm). The changes in ring aromatic character via simple harm…

Fast field cycling NMR relaxometry as a tool to monitor Parmigiano Reggiano cheese ripening.

2020

Abstract It is widely recognized that the longer the ageing, the more valuable Parmigiano Reggiano (PR) cheese becomes, due to the improvement of its sensorial and nutritional properties. Up to now, the evaluation of PR properties has been performed on samples mainly aged up to 40 months. For this reason, this study was aimed at collecting information about the chemical-physical characteristics of PR cheeses after ageing at 24, 48 and 84 months. The basic analyses on water amount, protein content and volatile organic compounds (VOC) revealed that PR ageing is associated to the decomposition of the organic components into smaller units. This drives water molecules closer to the aforementione…

Measuring hydrological connectivity inside soils with different texture by fast field cycling nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry

2022

Abstract The locution “hydrological connectivity inside the soil” is generally used to disclose how the spatial patterns inside the soil affect the physical–chemical processes at a molecular level to influence water transfer into the soil, the surface runoff and related sediment transport. Fast Field Cycling (FFC) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxometry has been used to measure both structural and functional connectivity by two indexes indicated as structural (SCI) and functional (FCI) connectivity index. Here, FFC-NMR relaxometry has been applied to analyze three samples: two non-degraded soils, having different grain-size distribution, and a degraded soil sampled in a badland area. P…

Oral health status in patients with moderate-severe and terminal renal failure.

2007

Aims. To evaluate the oral health status of patients with moderate-severe chronic renal failure (CRF) and with terminal renal failure (TRF). Design. The study group was formed of 50 patients: 22 (44%) with moderate-severe CRF and 28 (56%) with TRF included in a haemodialysis programme. The controls (n=64) presented similar characteristics with regard to sex, age, weight and educational level. A single dentist performed an intraoral examination on all the subjects, gathering information on: number of decayed, missing or filled teeth; supragingival plaque accumulation; calculus deposits; periodontal pockets in the Ramfjord teeth; and loss of insertion. Results. No significant differences were…

Melt flow instability and vortex structures in Czochralski growth under steady magnetic fields

2002

Abstract The hydrodynamics of melt motion in the CZ-process of silicon single crystal growth in axial and axial–radial magnetic fields is studied using a physical model. The modeling liquid is eutectics InGaSn. Most attention is paid to the problem of flow stability. A multi-channel system gathering data is used to define the pattern and dynamics of velocity disturbances. Instant spatial distributions of the electric potential induced by motion in the melt are obtained. Temporal evolution of the instant distributions in vertical and horizontal planes of the working volume is under investigation.

Managing Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Airport Inventories: An Overview

2011

For some years now, problems relating to gas emissions that affect climate and result from human activities have assumed a global dimension of large importance. The climate is, indeed, influenced by the concentrations of some pollutants in the atmosphere; these pollutants trap the long wave radiation emitted by the Earth and alter the energy balance, causing an accentuation of the natural greenhouse effect. In this view an inventory of greenhouse gases can become the benchmark against which to measure the achievement of quantitative targets set at the political level in the fight against climate change. Contrary to a general inventory of emissions related with air quality objectives and loc…

Proliferative activity in stenotic human aortocoronary bypass grafts

2002

Abstract Background: Aortocoronary bypass graft disease is responsible for long-term failure of autologous vein grafts. The analyses of proliferation and cell type characterisation in human bypass grafts harvested during re-do surgery make it possible to investigate the cellular processes leading to bypass graft failure. Methods: 30 stenotic vein grafts and 25 control veins were explantated during re-do heart surgery procedures. The total area and cell count of the neointima, media and adventitia were calculated computer-assisted. Actively proliferating cells were identified using antibody to Ki-67 and positive cells were determined by double-label immunocytochemistry with SMC α-actin, CD 3…

Efficient or Fractal Market Hypothesis? A Stock Indexes Modelling Using Geometric Brownian Motion and Geometric Fractional Brownian Motion

2021

In this article, we propose a test of the dynamics of stock market indexes typical of the US and EU capital markets in order to determine which of the two fundamental hypotheses, efficient market hypothesis (EMH) or fractal market hypothesis (FMH), best describes market behavior. The article’s major goal is to show how to appropriately model return distributions for financial market indexes, specifically which geometric Brownian motion (GBM) and geometric fractional Brownian motion (GFBM) dynamic equations best define the evolution of the S&P 500 and Stoxx Europe 600 stock indexes. Daily stock index data were acquired from the Thomson Reuters Eikon database during a ten-year period, fro…

Scientific abstracts and plain language summaries in psychology: A comparison based on readability indices.

2020

Findings from psychological research are usually difficult to interpret for non-experts. Yet, non-experts resort to psychological findings to inform their decisions (e.g., whether to seek a psychotherapeutic treatment or not). Thus, the communication of psychological research to non-expert audiences has received increasing attention over the last years. Plain language summaries (PLS) are abstracts of peer-reviewed journal articles that aim to explain the rationale, methods, findings, and interpretation of a scientific study to non-expert audiences using non-technical language. Unlike media articles or other forms of accessible research summaries, PLS are usually written by the authors of th…
