Warm white LED light by frequency down-conversion of mixed yellow and red Lumogen®

2013

This work reports on the benefits and promising opportunities offered by white LED hybrid technology, based on a mixing perylene-based dyes in order to obtain a warm white light for frequency-down conversion. In a standard Ce:YAG-based white LED, the white light appears cold due to the weakness of red wavelength components in the emission spectrum. In order to obtain a warmer white, one possible solution is to add a red phosphor to the yellow one to move the chromatic coordinates properly, though the luminous efficiency drastically decreases due to the increased light absorption of the coating layer. It is generally believed that the low efficiency of warm white LEDs is the main issue today…

On the influences of vegetation biomass on COSMO-Skymed X-band

2011

The knowledge of spatial and temporal variability of land cover is important to manage water resources for yield forecasting, water stress prediction, irrigation water management and flood protection. Cloud cover dramatically reduces the temporal resolution of optical data thus limiting their operational use; in addition, the spatial resolution is often inadequate for applications in heterogeneous areas. On the other hand, algorithms based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) implemented to retrieve vegetation parameters are not yet fully validated. New SAR missions (COSMO-Skymed and Terrasar-X) may represent a suitable source of data for operational uses due to the high spatial and temporal r…

Application of minidisk infiltrometer to estimate soil water repellency

2016

Soil water repellency (SWR) reduces affinity of soils to water resulting in detrimental implication for plants growth as well as for hydrological processes. During the last decades, it has become clear that SWR is much more widespread than formerly thought, having been reported for a wide variety of soils, land uses and climatic conditions. The repellency index (RI), based on soil-water to soil-ethanol sorptivity ratio, was proposed to characterize subcritical SWR that is the situation where a low degree of repellency impedes infiltration but does not prevent it. The minidisk infiltrometer allows adequate field assessment of RI inherently scaled to account for soil physical properties other…

Digital Holographic Microscopy: A New Imaging Technique to Quantitatively Explore Cell Dynamics with Nanometer Sensitivity

2014

In the first part of this chapter, we describe how the new concept of digital optics applied to the field of holographic microscopy has made it possible to quantitatively and accurately measure the phase retardation induced on the transmitted wavefront by the observed transparent specimen, allowing thus to develop a reliable and flexible digital holographic quantitative phase microscopy (DH-QPM). In the second part the most relevant DH-QPM applications in the field of cell biology are presented. Particularly, applications taking directly advantage of benefits provided by digital optics particularly off-line autofocusing and extended depth of focus, are outlined. Otherwise, special emphasis …

Characterizing weld pool surfaces from polarization state of thermal emissions

2013

International audience; In this Letter, a vision-based remote sensing methodology is proposed to measure the topography of weld pool surfaces from one single view. Thermal radiations emitted by the hot liquid metal at a wavelength within the arc plasma blind spectral window are acquired by a wavefront division polarimetric system. The refractive index of the liquid metal and the topography of the weld pool surface are inferred from the polarimetric state of the thermal radiations.

Ultrathin high-index metasurfaces for shaping focused beams

2015

The volume size of a converging wave, which plays a relevant role in image resolution, is governed by the wavelength of the radiation and the numerical aperture (NA) of the wavefront. We designed an ultrathin (λ/8 width) curved metasurface that is able to transform a focused field into a high-NA optical architecture, thus boosting the transverse and (mainly) on-axis resolution. The elements of the metasurface are metal-insulator subwavelength gratings exhibiting extreme anisotropy with ultrahigh index of refraction for TM polarization. Our results can be applied to nanolithography and optical microscopy. Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MEC) (TEC2013-50416-EXP).

Simple method for measuring bilayer system optical parameters

2012

A simple method for measuring bilayer system refractive indexes and thicknesses in the low absorbing part of spectra is demonstrated. The method is based on application of Savitzky - Golay smoothing filters and interference fringe separation in the reflected or transmitted spectra of the bilayer system. The refractive indexes and thicknesses are extracted from the wavelengths corresponding to extreme points in the spectrum. Due to the fact that wavelength difference of extreme points in the analyzed spectrum is defined by the product of both, the layer thickness and refractive index, one must generate an appropriate initial guess of these parameters. For refractive index approximation two d…

Mode family analysis for PMMA WGM micro resonators using spot intensity changes

2021

The whispering gallery modes (WGM) micro resonators are based on elliptical objects, which can be made from optically transparent materials, The geometry of the object enables optical wave circulating inside the ellipse using total internal reflection. If there is a monochromatic light source with constant intensity to the ellipse, constructive interference may be observed. Poly methyl methacrylate acrylic (PMMA) WGM micro resonators are commercially available with typical optical quality factor of 103-104. These could limit problems with WGM micro resonator expensive manufacturing. Thanks to advances in high resolution image processing, read-outs using spectroscopy (single photo detector) …

Simulation-Based Performance Study of e-Commerce Web Server System – Results for FIFO Scheduling

2013

The chapter concerns the issue of overloaded Web server performance evaluation using a simulation-based approach. We focus on a Business-to-Consumer (B2C) environment and consider server performance both from the perspective of computer system efficiency and e-business profitability. Results of simulation experiments for the Web server system under First-In-First-Out (FIFO) scheduling are discussed. Much attention has been paid to the analysis of the impact of a limited server system capacity on business-related performance metrics.

Verification of Web traffic burstiness and self-similarity for multiple online stores

2017

Developing realistic Web traffic models is essential for a reliable Web server performance evaluation. Very significant Web traffic properties that have been identified so far include burstiness and self-similarity. Very few relevant studies have been devoted to e-commerce traffic, however. In this paper, we investigate burstiness and self-similarity factors for seven different online stores using their access log data. Our findings show that both features are present in all the analyzed e-commerce datasets. Furthermore, a strong correlation of the Hurst parameter with the average request arrival rate was discovered (0.94). Estimates of the Hurst parameter for the Web traffic in the online …
