2010
Abstract The professional integration of higher education students is a problem for all contemporary societies, including the Romanian one. Effects of Inequality on Trust and Reciprocity: An Experiment With Real Effort
2021
The purpose of this paper is analyzing whether trust and reciprocity are affected by how rich the partner is or how well the partner performed several tasks with real effort. A trust game (TG) experiment is designed with three treatments. First, a baseline Treatment B in which subjects play a finitely repeated TG. Second, in a Treatment H with history, subjects know the partner’s wealth level reached in the past. Third, in a Treatment E with effort the individual endowment with which the TG is played is endogenous and results from the subject’s performance in three different real effort tasks (maths, cognitive and general knowledge related). The data analysis highlights the importance of pa…

Splines in convex sets under constraints of two‐sided inequality type in a hyperplane
2008
The problem of minimization of a smoothing functional under inequality constraints is considered in a hyperplane. The conditions of the existence of a solution are obtained and some properties of this solution are investigated. It is proved that the solution is a spline. The method for its construction is suggested. First Published Online: 14 Oct 2010
Cultural similarity and dissimilarity in intercultural conflicts
2015
This study investigated cultural similarity and dissimilarity in intercultural conflicts, by focusing on how a mediator understands cultural difference in the process of mediation. Intercultural conflict occurs when cultural worldviews of an individual or group are incompatible with the worldviews of another cultural group within the same community. Special interest has been on social inequality, stereotypes and ingroup outgroup tension as causes of intercultural conflicts. Participants for this study were qualified mediators from South Africa. In order to understand their practice environment and mediation landscape in general, community conflict in South Africa was studied. The findings r…
"Ulkopuolisuuden olo" : tapaustutkimus peruskoulun keskeyttäneiden romaninaisten koulukokemuksista
2019
Artikkelissa tarkastellaan kolmen peruskoulun keskeyttäneen, vapausrangaistusta suorittavan romaninaisen kertomuksia koulukokemuksistaan. Tutkimusta varten toteutettiin jokaisen osallistujan kanssa kertomushaastattelu, johon sisältyi kolme tapaamiskertaa. Haastattelija kirjoitti kertomusluonnokset, joiden sisällöistä keskusteltiin osallistujien kanssa. Kertomuksista etsittiin haastateltavien nimeämiä koulun keskeyttämisen syitä sekä näiden tekijöiden yhteisvaikutuksia intersektionaalisuuden näkökulmasta. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin yhteenkuuluvuuden kokemuksia sekä tapoja, joilla osallistujat asemoivat itseään koululaisina. Koulun keskeytymisen osasyiksi osallistujat nimesivät muiden muassa syrji…
Constructing social Europe through European cultural heritage
2021
The political and economic crises of the recent decades as well as the new changes brought on by globalization and digitalization have contributed to exacerbate social inequalities and injustice and revealed different social realities in Europe. The EU increasingly deals with social issues in its cultural and heritage policy. In this article, we explore the construction of this social dimension and advance the concept of 'social Europe' by exploring its cultural aspect based on our analysis of a recent EU heritage action, the European Heritage Label. In this action, the narrations of the European past and the attempts to foster common cultural heritage in Europe function as building blocks …
Climbing for equality: overcoming social inequality through sport : a narrative inquiry into the sport lives of five visually disabled climbers in Me…
2016
This master thesis is a qualitative narrative inquiry that illustrates and explores the stories of five visually disabled participants who took up the practice of rock climbing and mountaineering as a means to overcome social inequality. The researcher’s role within the study was that of active participation by being the coach and mountain guide for the participants over a period of five years. This narrative analysis reconstructs the stories of the participants in a coherent thematic analysis from a Marxist historical perspective, explaining how inequality towards the participants was created, by using the concept of Cultural Hegemony from Antonio Gramsci. The mentioned methodology was cho…
The ALHAMBRA survey: evolution of galaxy clustering since z∼1
2014
We study the clustering of galaxies as function of luminosity and redshift in the range $0.35 < z < 1.25$ using data from the Advanced Large Homogeneous Area Medium Band Redshift Astronomical (ALHAMBRA) survey. The ALHAMBRA data used in this work cover $2.38 \mathrm{deg}^2$ in 7 independent fields, after applying a detailed angular selection mask, with accurate photometric redshifts, $_z \lesssim 0.014 (1+z)$, down to $I_{\rm AB} < 24$. Given the depth of the survey, we select samples in $B$-band luminosity down to $L^{\rm th} \simeq 0.16 L^{*}$ at $z = 0.9$. We measure the real-space clustering using the projected correlation function, accounting for photometric redshifts uncert…
Enabling and constraining family: young women building their educational paths in Tanzania
2015
For an increasing number of African girls and women, upgrading the level of education has become a strategy for life improvement. This paper analyses the role that family plays in enabling women's education and contributes to understanding on the interconnectivity of education, work and family in women's lives in collective societies. The analysis focuses on how young Tanzanian women perceive the role of family and education in their ‘youth task’, of becoming adult. The analysis is based on interviews with seven young Tanzanian women enrolled in non-formal secondary education and nine professional women enrolled in higher education. The results show that the women were determined to pursue …
