Intrarectal immunization with rotavirus 2/6 virus-like particles induces an antirotavirus immune response localized in the intestinal mucosa and prot…

2006

ABSTRACTRotavirus (RV) is the main etiological agent of severe gastroenteritis in infants, and vaccination seems the most effective way to control the disease. Recombinant rotavirus-like particles composed of the viral protein 6 (VP6) and VP2 (2/6-VLPs) have been reported to induce protective immunity in mice when administered by the intranasal (i.n.) route. In this study, we show that administration of 2/6-VLPs by the intrarectal (i.r.) route together with either cholera toxin (CT) or a CpG-containing oligodeoxynucleotide as the adjuvant protects adult mice against RV infection. Moreover, when CT is used, RV shedding in animals immunized by the i.r. route is even reduced in comparison with…

Is COVID‐19 infection more severe in kidney transplant recipients?

2021

International audience; There are no studies which have compared the risk of severe Covid-19 and related mortality between transplant recipients and non-transplant patients. We enrolled two groups of patients hospitalized for Covid-19, i.e., kidney transplant recipients from the French Registry of Solid Organ Transplant (n=306) and a single-center cohort of non-transplant patients (n=795). An analysis was performed among subgroups matched for age and risk factors for severe Covid-19 or mortality. Severe Covid-19 was defined as admission (or transfer) to an intensive care unit, need for mechanical ventilation, or death.Transplant recipients were younger and had more comorbidities compared to…

Compassionate use of meropenem/vaborbactam for infections caused by KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae: a multicentre study

2022

Abstract Objectives To explore the real-life performance of meropenem/vaborbactam for treating serious KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae infections, including those resistant to ceftazidime/avibactam. Methods A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted in 12 Italian hospitals. Enrolled patients had K. pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) infections (59.5% of which were ceftazidime/avibactam resistant). Patients who received ≥72 h of meropenem/vaborbactam therapy (with or without other antimicrobials) in a compassionate-use setting were included. Results The 37 infections (all hospital-acquired) were mainly bacteraemic (BSIs, n = 23) or lower respira…

The Italian Society of Gastroenterology (SIGE) and the Italian Group for the study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IG-IBD) Clinical Practice Guideline…

2010

Biological therapies are an important step in the management of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. In consideration of high cost and safety issues there is the need to have clear recommendations for their use. Despite the American Gastroenterological Association and the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation have published exhaustive Inflammatory Bowel Disease guidelines, national guidelines may be necessary as cultural values, economical and legal issues may differ between countries. For these reasons the Italian Society of Gastroenterology and the Italian Group for the study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease have decided to elaborate the Italian guidelines on the use of biologics in Inflammatory…

Serological and molecular identification of Legionella spp. isolated from water and surrounding air samples in Italian healthcare facilities

2016

Abstract Background Legionella is an intracellular microorganism living in natural and artificial aquatic environments. Although its transmission to humans is linked to the inhalation of contaminated aerosols, there is no validated air sampling method for the control and prevention of the disease. The aim of the present study was to provide more information on the distribution of Legionella spp. in indoor environments and to determine whether the same Legionella strains are isolated from air and water samples. Methods Ten healthcare facilities located in seven regions of Italy were enrolled. The serological typing of Legionella spp. from water samples and the surrounding air by active and p…

Pre-operative leukocytosis: a potential poor prognosis risk factor in cardiac device implantation: a case report

2022

Introduction. Despite the benefits of the implantation of cardiac rhythm management devices cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection is an emerging problem New debate emerged about the unclear role of the pre-operative alteration of pro-inflammatory parameters, such as leukocytosis, in the development CIED infection and/or heart failure, and its consequent impact on the timing of ICD implantation/reimplantation. Case report. A 65 years old patient with a history of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) type II, ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias, chronic myocardial ischemia, heart failure was admitted to hospital.Healthcare workers opted for ICD implantation despite the presence of…

Effects of antibiotics and Clostridium difficile infection on the human gut microbiota

2015

Usefulness of Midline Catheters versus Peripheral Venous Catheters in an Inpatient Unit: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial

2022

Canalization of vascular accesses is one of the most used techniques in hospitalization units. When talking about peripherally inserted catheters, we can differentiate between peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC), midline catheters, and long peripheral catheters (LPC). Midline catheters are rarely used despite being recommended for intravenous therapies lasting more than six days. This research is a pilot study of a longitudinal clinical trial. It aims to compare the complications associated with intravenous therapy between the control group (CG) with a PIVC and the experimental group (EG) with a midline in an Internal Medicine Unit of a Spanish hospital for three months. In this study, …

Phenotypic and genetic characterization of emerging trematodiasis: Fascioliasis and Schistosomiasis

2021
