The aim of this study was to evaluate micafungin efficacy for treatment of invasive candidiasis/candidaemia in patients with cancer. Modified intent-to-treat populations were analysed from two trials: one, in adults and children with confirmed Candida infection, compared micafungin (adults 100 mg day(-1); children 2 mg kg(-1) day(-1)) with liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB 3 mg kg(-1) day(-1)); and the other, in adults only, compared micafungin (100 or 150 mg day(-1)) with caspofungin (50 mg day(-1); 70 mg loading dose). Eye fluke-induced cataract formation in fish: quantitative analysis using an ophthalmological microscope

We examined the parasite-induced cataract formation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) using slit-lamp microscopy to determine the relationship between cataract intensity and number of Diplostomum spathaceum parasites that were established in the lens. Cataract intensity increased significantly with parasite burden, but was also affected by the pattern of exposure to the parasite cercariae. The slit-lamp methodology proved useful in scoring the cataracts since it provides a 3-dimensional view into the lens and gives an actual picture of the location and intensity of the cataracts, which allows detailed investigations of mechanisms underlying cataract formation in various fish species. Renin-Angiotensin System Blockade and Mortality in Patients With Hypertension and COVID-19 Infection

To determine the effect renin-angiotensin system blockers on the outcome in patients with hypertension and concurrent COVID-19 infection, we searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar for relevant articles. Twelve studies with a total of 16,101 patients met the inclusion criteria. The mortality rate among the users of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers was 12.15% and in non-users it was 14.56% (risk ratio 0.70, 95% CI [0.53-0.91], P < 0.007). There was no difference in the risk of death between the use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (risk ratio 1.09, 95% CI [0.90 -1.32]). We conclude tha…
