Background: In Italy, Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) strains are highly endemic and KPC producing CC258 is reported as the widely predominating clone. In Palermo, Italy, previous reports have confirmed this pattern. However, recent preliminary findings suggest that an epidemiological change is likely ongoing towards a polyclonal KPC-Kp spread. Impact of infectious burden on progression of carotid atherosclerosis.

Background and Purpose— Recent findings suggest a causative role of infections in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The extent of atherosclerosis and the prognosis of patients with atherosclerosis seem to be increased by the number of infections to which an individual has been exposed. In a prospective study, we evaluated the effect of 8 pathogens and the aggregate pathogen burden on the progression of carotid atherosclerosis. Fish population size, and not density, as the determining factor of parasite infection: a case study.

The diversity and abundance of parasites vary widely among populations of the same host species. These infection parameters are, to some extent, determined by characteristics of the host population or of its habitat. A rare case of sepsis due to Corynebacterium macginleyi from central venous catheter in an elderly woman

Corynebacterium macginleyi is a gram positive rod that causes especially ocular infections: since now only six elderly cases of extraocular infection are described. A 76 years old bedridden woman with a central venous catheter was hospitalized for 10 days of persistent fever. She was treated before with vancomicin and then with imipenem. The clinical conditions improved and the patient was discharged after two weeks of hospitalization. Among recognised risk factors for this infection the advanced age, indwelling devices and immunosuppression seem the most important. Resorcinarene bis-crown silver complexes and their application as antibacterial Langmuir-Blodgett films

Silver complexes of a cation binding supramolecular host, resorcinarene bis-crown (CNBC5) with propyl, nonyl, decyl and undecyl alkyl chains were investigated by NMR titration, picrate extraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Binding studies showed that both 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 (host-Ag(+)) complexes are present in solution with only a slight effect of the lower rim alkyl chain length on the binding constants (log K 4.0-4.2 for 1 : 2 complexes). Solid state complexes of the resorcinarene bis-crowns bearing either C(3) or C(11) chains were obtained. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of phenotypic intrinsic and acquired antimicrobial resistance of enterobacteria from several species of terrestrial wild mammals in national parks of Gabon. Amperometric detection of extended-spectrum β-lactamase activity : application to the characterization of resistant E.coli strains
