Super-Planckian axions from near-conformality

2019

We present a novel framework for obtaining large hierarchies in axion decay constants as well as trans-Planckian field excursions, with no need for tuning or a large number of fields. We consider a model with two or more conformal field theories with a common cutoff, which are linked by a gauged diagonal symmetry. This construction is dual to the geometry of a warped space with two or more throats glued at a common brane. Besides allowing for calculability, the dual picture makes it possible to interpret the hierarchy of decay constants entirely in terms of the geometry. Our setup can be applied to any framework which requires large field excursions or multiple hierarchies of decay constant…

Galactic Magnetic Fields As a Consequence of Inflation

2002

The generation of a magnetic field in the Early Universe is considered, due to the gravitational production of the Z-boson field during inflation. Scaled to the epoch of galaxy formation this magnetic field suffices to trigger the galactic dynamo and explain the observed galactic magnetic fields. The mechanism is independent of the inflationary model.

Cosmology of the Planck Era from a Renormalization Group for Quantum Gravity

2001

Homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies of the Planck era before the classical Einstein equations become valid are studied taking quantum gravitational effects into account. The cosmological evolution equations are renormalization group improved by including the scale dependence of Newton's constant and of the cosmological constant as it is given by the flow equation of the effective average action for gravity. It is argued that the Planck regime can be treated reliably in this framework because gravity is found to become asymptotically free at short distances. The epoch immediately after the initial singularity of the Universe is described by an attractor solution of the improved equations w…

On the renormalization of ultraviolet divergences in the inflationary angular power spectrum

2015

We revise the role of ultraviolet divergences of cosmological observables and the corresponding renormalization from a space-time perspective. We employ the two-point function of primordial perturbations generated during inflation to derive an analytic expression for the multipole coefficients Cl in the Sachs-Wolfe regime. We analyzethe ultraviolet behaviorand stress the fact that the standard result in the literature is equivalent to a renormalization of the two-point function at zeroth adiabatic order. We also argue that renormalization at second adiabatic order seems to be more appropriate from a physical point of view. This may change significantly the predictions for Cl, while maintain…

Spiral Inflation

2015

We propose a novel scenario of primordial inflation in which the inflaton goes through a spiral motion starting from around the top of a symmetry breaking potential. We show that, even though inflation takes place for a field value much smaller than Planck scale, it is possible to obtain relatively large tensor to scalar ratio ($r \sim 0.1$) without fine tuning. The inflationary observables perfectly match Planck data.

Spiral Inflation with Coleman-Weinberg Potential

2015

We apply the idea of spiral inflation to Coleman-Weinberg potential, and show that inflation matching well observations is allowed for a symmetry-breaking scale ranging from an intermediate scale to GUT scale even if the quartic coupling $\lambda$ is of $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$. The tensor-to-scalar ratio can be of $\mathcal{O}(0.01)$ in case of GUT scale symmetry-breaking.

Colliders as a simultaneous probe of supersymmetric dark matter and Terascale cosmology

2006

Terascale supersymmetry has the potential to provide a natural explanation of the dominant dark matter component of the standard lambda-CDM cosmology. However once we impose the constraints on minimal supersymmetry parameters from current particle physics data, a satisfactory dark matter abundance is no longer prima facie natural. This Neutralino Tuning Problem could be a hint of nonstandard cosmology during and/or after the Terascale era. To quantify this possibility, we introduce an alternative cosmological benchmark based upon a simple model of quintessential inflation. This benchmark has no free parameters, so for a given supersymmetry model it allows an unambiguous prediction of the da…

BARYOGENESIS IN SUPERGRAVITY INFLATIONARY MODELS

1985

Abstract Realistic N=1 supergravity theories with a gravitino mass of order 1 TeV require a period of inflation to dilute the gravitino abundance. Moreover, if the gravitino is unstable the reheat temperature is bounded to be no greater than O(108 GeV). We show that such models may still have acceptable rates of baryosynthesis and discuss possible mechanisms.

Inflationary Imprints on Dark Matter

2015

We show that dark matter abundance and the inflationary scale $H$ could be intimately related. Standard Model extensions with Higgs mediated couplings to new physics typically contain extra scalars displaced from vacuum during inflation. If their coupling to Standard Model is weak, they will not thermalize and may easily constitute too much dark matter reminiscent to the moduli problem. As an example we consider Standard Model extended by a $Z_2$ symmetric singlet $s$ coupled to the Standard Model Higgs $\Phi$ via $\lambda \Phi^{\dag}\Phi s^2$. Dark matter relic density is generated non-thermally for $\lambda \lesssim 10^{-7}$. We show that the dark matter yield crucially depends on the inf…
