Does collaborative hypertext support better engagement in learning of the basics in informatics?

1997

Hypertext is a powerful cognitive tool supporting knowledge construction. We organized two courses about the basics in informatics using collaborative hypertext (experimental groups) based on the hyperbooks built by the students participating in the courses. Simultaneously, we ran two courses without collaborative hypertext (control groups). The study found that collaborative hypertext affects motivation equally regarding most themes of the basics in informatics. The result reflects the need for traditional uncomputerized learning methods in the basics of informatics or the need to concentrate on improving the truthfulness of hypertext-based learning. However, some students may benefit from …

Who Benefits from WWW Presentation in the Basics of Informatics?

2011

This paper describes the use of WWW-based guided tours as a complementary addition to conventional lectures in the basics of informatics. Learning can be promoted in the spirit of constructivism, situated action, and cognitive flexibility when organizing a WWW coursework. We analyze the benefit of an optional coursework, including the use of guided tours and the use of search engines and directories on the WWW. This paper presents who benefits and who does not benefit from our optional coursework. The analysis is based on the background information and prior computer experience of the students, as well as pre and post tests. The study found that our WWW-based coursework suits best for femal…

Temporal variability analysis reveals biases in electronic health records due to hospital process reengineering interventions over seven years

2019

[EN] Objective To evaluate the effects of Process-Reengineering interventions on the Electronic Health Records (EHR) of a hospital over 7 years. Materials and methods Temporal Variability Assessment (TVA) based on probabilistic data quality assessment was applied to the historic monthly-batched admission data of Hospital La Fe Valencia, Spain from 2010 to 2016. Routine healthcare data with a complete EHR was expanded by processed variables such as the Charlson Comorbidity Index. Results Four Process-Reengineering interventions were detected by quantifiable effects on the EHR: (1) the hospital relocation in 2011 involved progressive reduction of admissions during the next four months, (2) th…

A Multivariate Analysis on Non-nucleoside HIV-1 Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors and Resistance Induced by Mutation

2003

This paper describes the use of multivariate statistical procedure PCA as a tool to explore the inhibitory activity of classes of NNRTIs against HIV-1 viruses (wild type and more frequent mutants, Y181C, V106A, K103N, L100I) and against RT enzyme. The analysis of correlations between biological activity and molecular descriptors or similarity indexes allowed a reliable classification of the fifty five derivatives considered in this study. The best results were obtained in the case of L100I and K103N mutants for which the higher number of assignments was found when the principal components derived from the descriptors were used. On this basis this statistical approach is proposed as a reliab…

Assessing directional interactions among multiple physiological time series: The role of instantaneous causality

2012

This paper deals with the assessment of frequency domain causality in multivariate (MV) time series with significant instantaneous interactions. After providing different causality definitions, we introduce an extended MV autoregressive modeling approach whereby each definition is described in the time domain in terms of the model coefficients, and is quantified in the frequency domain by means of novel measures of directional connectivity. These measures are illustrated in a theoretical example showing how they reduce to known indexes when instantaneous causality is trivial, while they describe peculiar aspects of directional interaction in the presence of instantaneous causality. The appl…

Assessing Frequency Domain Causality in Cardiovascular Time Series with Instantaneous Interactions

2009

Summary Background: The partial directed coherence (PDC) is commonly used to assess in the frequency domain the existence of causal relations between two time series measured in conjunction with a set of other time series. Although the multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) model traditionally used for PDC computation accounts only for lagged effects, instantaneous effects cannot be neglected in the analysis of cardiovascular time series. Objectives: We propose the utilization of an extended MVAR model for PDC computation, in order to improve the evaluation of frequency domain causality in the presence of zero-lag correlations among multivariate time series. Methods: A procedure for the identif…

MuTE: a MATLAB toolbox to compare established and novel estimators of the multivariate transfer entropy.

2014

A challenge for physiologists and neuroscientists is to map information transfer between components of the systems that they study at different scales, in order to derive important knowledge on structure and function from the analysis of the recorded dynamics. The components of physiological networks often interact in a nonlinear way and through mechanisms which are in general not completely known. It is then safer that the method of choice for analyzing these interactions does not rely on any model or assumption on the nature of the data and their interactions. Transfer entropy has emerged as a powerful tool to quantify directed dynamical interactions. In this paper we compare different ap…

Measuring Connectivity in Linear Multivariate Processes: Definitions, Interpretation, and Practical Analysis

2011

This tutorial paper introduces a common framework for the evaluation of widely used frequency-domain measures of coupling (coherence, partial coherence) and causality (directed coherence, partial directed coherence) from the parametric representation of linear multivariate (MV) processes. After providing a comprehensive time-domain definition of the various forms of connectivity observed in MV processes, we particularize them to MV autoregressive (MVAR) processes and derive the corresponding frequency-domain measures. Then, we discuss the theoretical interpretation of these MVAR-based connectivity measures, showing that each of them reflects a specific time-domain connectivity definition an…
