The recurrence of pleural effusions is a common event in a variety of neoplastic diseases. The objective of this study was to identify the mechanisms promoting the homing and growth of cancer cells within the pleural space. A cancer cell line recovered from malignant pleural fluids (lung adenocarcinoma cell line) that constitutively expresses cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and all types of prostaglandin receptors was studied. Oxidative and carbonyl stress leads to generation of N(epsilon)-carboxymethyllysine-modified proteins (CML-mps), which are known to bind the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) and induce nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB-dependent proinflammatory gene expression. To determine the impact of CML-mps in vivo, RAGE-dependent sustained NF-kappaB activation was studied in resection gut specimens from patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The results of Pi-typing on 2647 individuals from 9 populations are reported. Of the 17 phenotypes and 9 alleles described in literature, we found 12 phenotypes and 8 alleles. The population smaples differ characteristically in their allele frequencies. The allle PiM appears constantly in all populations tested with a frequency of more than 0.85. The alleles PiF (0.01–0.11), PiS (0.01–0.02) and PiZ (0.01–0.02) were also relatively frequent in all samples. All the other alleles remain below 0.01. A great increase in the number of Pi-variants was observed in the Central European area. The frequency of α1-at variants in various populations is discussed.

A novel cancer stem-like cell line (3AB-OS), expressing a number of pluripotent stem cell markers, was irreversibly selected from human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells by long-term treatment (100 days) with 3-aminobenzamide (3AB). 3AB-OS cells are a heterogeneous and stable cell population composed by three types of fibroblastoid cells, spindle-shaped, polygonal-shaped, and rounded-shaped. The emergence of drug-resistant virus in hepatitis B virus patients treated with lamivudine is well documented. However. its clinical impact in the long-term treatment of anti-HBe positive compensated cirrhotic patients is not well known. In this study, we treated 22 consecutive patients with anti-HBe compensated cirrhosis with lamivudine for a median period of 42 months. All patients responded to lamivudine, but viral breakthrough occurred in 13 patients (59%) between 9 and 42 months of therapy due to the emergence of a mutant strain.
