Replacing Project Managers in Information Technology Projects

2015

According to anecdotal evidence, project managers working on information technology (IT) projects are occasionally replaced, although the literature on information systems (IS) and project management (PM) makes little mention of it. With a view to narrowing this knowledge gap the authors examined the reasons behind the practice. The authors took an interpretive approach to the data gathering and analysis, and collected descriptions about replacing project managers (RPM) from interviews and questionnaires (n=43). The concept of contradiction served as a lens through which to identify the underlying reasons. Contradiction refers to statements asserting or expressing the opposite of another st…

Open Resources as the Educational Basis for a Bachelor-level Project-Based Course

2015

This article presents an innovation-based course concept for project-based learning. In this course, student groups are asked to ideate and implement a software product based on Open Data and Open API releases. By emphasizing students’ own product ideation, the course requires and enhances self-directed learning skills and prompts the students to see the unlimited possibilities in becoming and being a practitioner of the computing discipline. Relatedly, the course provides a tool to improve student self-efficacy, as the students, coached through challenges, come to know that they are able to produce software using various open interfaces.

Innovation as a driver of internationalization in the software industry

2013

Innovation and internationalization are two important factors for growth. This study analyzes whether innovativeness has an effect on the internationalization of software firms, and if so, how strong this effect is. Innovation and internationalization have rarely been studied together, with research tending to focus more on the relationship between innovations and growth. However, internationalization is a key prerequisite for growth for companies operating in small domestic markets. This paper analyzes the innovativeness and internationalization of firms, using data from the Software Industry Survey conducted in Finland. Since the speed of firm growth and internationalization are dependent…

Does innovativeness reduce startup survival rates?

2015

There are two competing hypotheses explaining how innovativeness influences the survival of startups: On the one hand, innovativeness is argued to foster survival-enhancing attributes (e.g., market power and cost efficiency) and capabilities (e.g., absorptive capacity). On the other hand, an innovative startup faces (and bears the associated risks of) liabilities of newness and smallness that exceed those of its non-innovative counterparts. The available empirical literature addressing this theoretical tension mostly supports the former hypothesis; we suggest that this finding is, in part, driven by the common practice of employing an ex post measure that already embodies a degree of succes…

Accelerating the Americanization of Management Education

2015

The Journal of Management Inquiry astutely predicted in 2004 that the Americanization of business education would not just continue but increase. Ten years later, it is arguable that the acceleration of the Americanization of management education has exceeded all expectations. To theoretically build toward understanding how and why the American business education model has been adopted to different extents, this comparative study builds on the institutional logics perspective, arguing that different institutional logics can potentially explain the various forms and patterns of Americanization and how they are manifested in the world’s business schools.

Determinants of Individual Knowledge Innovation Behavior

2021

With the upsurge of "emotional storm" in the field of organizational behavior, the studies on individual emotions in organizational context are rising. Especially the relationship between emotions and knowledge innovation has attracted much attention by scholars. In particular, individual emotions may exert great effect on knowledge innovation whereas the mechanism is still unclear. Based on the emotional event theory, this paper constructs a model which explores the interaction of positive and negative emotions with individual knowledge innovation. Based on questionnaire data analysis, the results show that knowledge sharing partly mediate the relationship between positive emotion and know…

DESIGN E TRANSIZIONE DIGITALE : nuove sfide design-driven per l’innovazione tecno-sociale

2022

How can it be possible to work salvifically on an asphyxiated society that is beingdragged down by turbo-capitalism, the ‘soft tyranny’ of algorithms and ‘data-cracy’and marked by hegemonic and centralised socio-technical systems? Starting from the-oretical reflections and multidisciplinary contributions, this paper focuses on the strate-gic importance of techno-social innovation, critically illustrating some significant design-driven experiences that outline innovative lines of development in the field of design re-search: WASP’s experimental activity (3D printing), Manzini’s reflections on hybrid localcommunities and cities in chaotic mutation, the projects of hacktivists Persico and Ia-c…
