Fuzzy technique for microcalcifications clustering in digital mammograms

Abstract Background Mammography has established itself as the most efficient technique for the identification of the pathological breast lesions. Among the various types of lesions, microcalcifications are the most difficult to identify since they are quite small (0.1-1.0 mm) and often poorly contrasted against an images background. Exudate-based diabetic macular edema detection in fundus images using publicly available datasets

International audience; Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a common vision threatening complication of diabetic retinopathy. In a large scale screening environment DME can be assessed by detecting exudates (a type of bright lesions) in fundus images. In this work, we introduce a new methodology for diagnosis of DME using a novel set of features based on colour, wavelet decomposition and automatic lesion segmentation. These features are employed to train a classifier able to automatically diagnose DME through the presence of exudation. The food industry is evolving and tends to reduce its environmental impact, to control its waste and to valorise all of its production. Grapes and coffee are among the main agricultural products in the world and not all of the byproducts resulting from their processing are still valued today. New ways of valorisation are seeked in order to limit production losses. Yet, these byproducts are rich in glycosides, the amount of which may be from two to five times greater than that of the free volatile compounds. Abstract This paper shows that the histone deacetylase inhibitor SAHA sensitised at sub-toxic doses human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2, Hep3B and SK-Hep1) to TRAIL-induced apoptosis, while it was ineffective in primary human hepatocytes (PHHs). In particular in HCC cells SAHA increased the expression of death receptor 5 (DR5) and caused a decrement of c-Flip. These two modifications provoked in the presence of TRAIL the rapid production of TRAIL-DISC and the activation of caspase-8. Preparation of Hg2+ selective fluorescent chemosensors based on surface modified core–shell aluminosilicate nanoparticles

A synthetic procedure for the preparation of functional structured inorganic–organic hybrid materials consisting of boehmite-silica core–shell nanoparticles and anthracene-containing amines covalently attached to the nanoparticles surface is reported. The system functionalised with the monoamine chain shows a very high sensing performance for Hg2+ detection in pure water reaching a detection limit of 0.2 ppb. Two additional advantages of these systems are their stability over a wide pH window and the feasibility to be recovered by a simple procedure.

On-line preconcentration strategies for analyzing pesticides in fruits and vegetables by micellar electrokinetic chromatography.

Five pesticides (fludioxonil, procymidone, pyriproxyfen, dinoseb and carbendazim) were separated in reversed migration micellar electrokinetic chromatography (RM-MEKC) using 20 mmol l(-1) phosphate buffer at pH 2.3, containing 25 mmol l(-1) sodium dodecylsulfate and 10% methanol. Three on-line concentration strategies, sweeping (SW), normal stacking with reversed migration and a water plug (SRW) and stacking with reverse migration and removal of sample matrix using polarity switching (SRMM), were compared. We developed a method for the determination of phytic acid (IP6) and its degradation products (IP1-IP5) by ion-pair chromatography coupled to a double focussing inductively coupled plasma-sector field-mass spectrometer (ICP-SF-MS). For the detection of the phosphorus species a mass resolution (m/Δm) of 4000 was needed in order to separate the 31P+ signal from the interfering clusterions. The separation of the six phosphorus species was enabled by a gradient elution using tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBA) as ion-pair reagent. Computational chemistry meets experiments for explaining the geometry, electronic structure, and optical properties of Ca10V6O25

In this paper, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study to disclose, for the first time, the structural, electronic, and optical properties of Ca10V6O25 crystals. The microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MAH) method has been employed to synthesize these crystals with different morphologies, within a short reaction time at 120 °C. Water Sorption on Mesoporous Aluminosilicate MCM-41

Characterization of the interaction of water with the highly ordered mesoporous solid MCM-41 (pore diameter ∼2.5 nm) is undertaken with the aid of several techniques (adsorption gravimetry, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and controlled rate-evolved gas analysis). The relatively complex water-MCM-41 interactions are characterized by a type V isotherm indicating an initial repulsive character followed by a capillary condensation step of the adsorbate. This highlights both hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of this potential model mesoporous adsorbent.
