AbstractMany procellariiforms use olfactory cues to locate food patches over the seemingly featureless ocean surface. In particular, some of them are able to detect and are attracted by dimethylsulfide (DMS), a volatile compound naturally occurring over worldwide oceans in correspondence with productive feeding areas. The comparative analysis of the first lower molar (M1) of five populations of the steppe vole Microtus gregalis (Pallas, 1779) of the Upper Pleistocene from Romania and Germany has permitted to identify criteria characterising these populations. The proposed hypothesis in order to explain the observed variations between these populations is different chronological migrations of populations of M. gregalis from different climatic and geographical regions.

Sequence and evolution of a hexamerin from the ant Camponotus festinatus.

In the ant Camponotus festinatus, two different hexamerins accumulate stage-specifically during the late larval period and at various times in adults. These hexamerins serve as storage proteins and play important roles in brood nourishment and colony founding. We report an analysis of the cDNA sequence of C. festinatus hexamerin 2 (CfeHex2). The native protein contains 732 amino acids, which are moderately enriched in aromatic amino acids, aspartate and asparagine. Phylogenetic analyses show a close relationship of CfeHex2 to a putative toxin of the braconid wasp, Bracon hebetor. Fascioliasis by Fasciola hepatica is the vector-borne disease presenting the widest latitudinal, longitudinal and altitudinal distribution known. Dysfunction of Oskyddad causes Harlequin-type ichthyosis-like defects in Drosophila melanogaster.

Prevention of desiccation is a constant challenge for terrestrial organisms. Land insects have an extracellular coat, the cuticle, that plays a major role in protection against exaggerated water loss. Here, we report that the ABC transporter Oskyddad (Osy)—a human ABCA12 paralog—contributes to the waterproof barrier function of the cuticle in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. We show that the reduction or elimination of Osy function provokes rapid desiccation. Osy is also involved in defining the inward barrier against xenobiotics penetration. Consistently, the amounts of cuticular hydrocarbons that are involved in cuticle impermeability decrease markedly when Osy activity is reduced. …

We studied the human HL60 leukemia cell line and its multidrug resistant (MDR) variant HL60R. In contrast to the HL60, HL60R showed an inability to undergo apoptosis from doxorubicin (Dox) or other different stimuli, including cisplatin, Fas ligation and serum withdrawal. HL60R cells lost surface Fas expression, but we found no evidence that Fas/FasL mediates the apoptotic effects of Dox in HL60. P-glycoprotein (P-gp) did not seem to play a major role as a specific inhibitor of apoptosis. In fact, the P-gp inhibitor verapamil reversed only partially the resistance to Dox-induced apoptosis of the MDR cells. Abstract Background Insect diapause is an important biological process which involves many life-history parameters important for survival and reproductive fitness at both individual and population level. Drosophila montana, a species of D. virilis group, has a profound photoperiodic reproductive diapause that enables the adult flies to survive through the harsh winter conditions of high latitudes and altitudes. The cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne F. (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) is an important food storage pest affecting the tobacco industry and is increasingly impacting museums and herbaria. Monitoring methods make use of pheromone traps which can be implemented using chili fruit powder. The objective of this study was to assess the response of L. serricorne to the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from different chili powders in order to identify the main semiochemicals involved in this attraction. The presence of neurosecretory cells in the frontal ganglion (FG) has been demonstrated only in the Lepidoptera Bombyx (BOUNHIOL et al., 1953), Manduca (BORG et al., 1973; BELL et al., 1974), and Diatraea (YIN and CHIPPENDALE, 1975). In Manduca and Diatraea the neurosecretory material of the FG is apparently involved in the regulation of diapause.

Degenerative and regenerative processes involved in midgut pseudotumor formation in the stick insect (Carausius morosus)

Spontaneous and experimentally induced pseudotumor formation in Carausius morosus impairs the midgut tissue homeostasis. Spontaneous pseudotumor formation begins by the break down of a single or a small group of columnar cells (CCs) and is followed by the degeneration of neighboring CCs. There are not only marked similarities but also decisive differences between normal dying CCs in healthy specimens and the degeneration of CCs leading to pseudotumors: in both cases, the apical cell parts with the nucleus are extruded into the midgut lumen, but only during of pseudotumor formation an "amorphous substance" originates from the basal parts of the CCs.
