Modeling the electromechanical impedance technique for the assessment of dental implant stability
2015
We simulated the electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique to assess the stability of dental implants. The technique consists of bonding a piezoelectric transducer to the element to be monitored. When subjected to an electric field, the transducer induces structural excitations which, in turn, affect the transducer's electrical admittance. As the structural vibrations depend on the mechanical impedance of the element, the measurement of the transducer's admittance can be exploited to assess the element's health. In the study presented in this paper, we created a 3D finite element model to mimic a transducer bonded to the abutment of a dental implant placed in a host bone site. We simulate…
Virtual simulation of an osseointegrated trans-humeral prosthesis: A falling scenario
2018
Abstract Introduction Traditional prosthetic solutions expose the amputee to numerous problems that limit his ability to safely perform the normal activities of daily life. In order to eliminate the problems related to the use of the traditional prosthesis with socket, a new technique was developed for fixing the prosthesis to the amputees based on the principle of osseointegration. The aim of this paper is to study and analyze the stress distribution on the interface between a trans-humeral osseointegrated prosthetic implant and the residual bone, identifying the most stressed areas and thus foreseeing possible failure phenomena of the entire prosthetic system and, after, to compare the st…
The use of language in migrant stay-at-home parents’ process of integration : Experiences of inclusion and exclusion
2017
This paper examines the use of language and how it contributes to the experiences of inclusion and exclusion of recent migrant stay-at-home parents in Finland. The study shows how the use of language facilitates the integration process of newly arrived stay-at-home parents of migrant background and affects their experiences of social inclusion and/or exclusion. The study uses the translingual approach (Canagarajah, 2013) to shed light on the multilingual reality migrants are faced with in their new surroundings. The approach is ethnographic and the data is interpreted using data-driven conventional content analysis (Tuomi & Sarajärvi, 2009, pp. 108–113). The results suggest that English wor…
The importance of correct implants positioning and masticatory load direction on a fixed prosthesis
2018
Background Through the biomechanical study of dental implants, it is possible to understand the dissipation effects of masticatory loads in different situations and prevent the longevity of osseointegration. Aims: To evaluate the microstrains generated around external hexagon implants, using axial and non-axial loads in a fixed four-element prosthesis with straight implants and implants inclined at 17°. Material and Methods Three implants were modeled using CAD software following the manufacturer's measurements. Then, implants were duplicated and divided into two groups: one with straight implants and respective abutments, and the other with angled implants at 17° and respective abutments. …
Impact of Foreign Aid on Economic Growth in Nepal
2019
Master's thesis Business Administration BE501 - University of Agder 2019 Nepal, being one of the least developed countries, has beenreceiving aid for more than six decades. It is very important to see how the country is being able to utilize the aid receipts in the economic developmentof the nation.Using annual time series data from 1983 to 2013, the effect of foreign aid oneconomic growth of Nepal has been analysed. The empirical work has beenperformed in two phases(1983-2002 and 1983-2013). The result from Johansen’s cointegrationtest for the shorter time interval, when there was relatively a poor economic situationin the country, revealsthat aid has a negative long-run effect on per capita …
Minori stranieri non accompagnanti: abilità, risorse e competenze
2019
Redox potentials and acidity constants from density functional theory based molecular dynamics.
2014
CONSPECTUS: All-atom methods treat solute and solvent at the same level of electronic structure theory and statistical mechanics. All-atom computation of acidity constants (pKa) and redox potentials is still a challenge. In this Account, we review such a method combining density functional theory based molecular dynamics (DFTMD) and free energy perturbation (FEP) methods. The key computational tool is a FEP based method for reversible insertion of a proton or electron in a periodic DFTMD model system. The free energy of insertion (work function) is computed by thermodynamic integration of vertical energy gaps obtained from total energy differences. The problem of the loss of a physical refe…
Developing a Curriculum for Mentally Retarded Adults ‐‐ a cooperative project between the university and the practitioners
1996
Abstract As recently as six years ago, after their compulsory education was over, it was very difficult for severely and profoundly mentally retarded people in Finland to receive further education. The regional units within the social‐services sector financed a four‐year project which was carried out at the University of Jyvdskyld, during this project an adult‐education plan was produced, its implementation was monitored and the content of adult education and the training of staff was developed. During the experiment the mentally retarded people involved became more actively involved in the different activities, and a considerable improvement was observed in their independent daily living s…
Promoter-Targeted Histone Acetylation of Chromatinized Parvoviral Genome Is Essential for the Progress of Infection
2015
ABSTRACT The association of host histones with parvoviral DNA is poorly understood. We analyzed the chromatinization and histone acetylation of canine parvovirus DNA during infection by confocal imaging and in situ proximity ligation assay combined with chromatin immunoprecipitation and high-throughput sequencing. We found that during late infection, parvovirus replication bodies were rich in histones bearing modifications characteristic of transcriptionally active chromatin, i.e., histone H3 lysine 27 acetylation (H3K27ac). H3K27ac, in particular, was located in close proximity to the viral DNA-binding protein NS1. Importantly, our results show for the first time that in the chromatinized …
On the Use of GPU for Accelerating Communication-Aware Mapping Techniques
2015
Different communication-aware mapping techniques were proposed in recent years for improving the performance of distributed systems based on both, off-chip and on-chip networks. Some of these proposals were based on heuristic search for finding pseudo-optimal assignments of tasks and processing elements. However, the technology integration improvements have allowed a significant increase in the number of network nodes, requiring the acceleration of the heuristic search. In this paper, we propose a comparative study of the local search method used in a communication-aware mapping technique, when implemented on different parallel architectures. We compare the performance provided by a version…
