Global English : Varieties of English in textbooks
2009

Student experiences of critical multilingual and intercultural communication competence assessment in higher education
2022
In this chapter, we present multilingual and intercultural communication competence (MICC) as a situational and contextual process. The aim of this qualitative, empirical study is to understand the students’ perceptions of assessing MICC as a holistic phenomenon that does not represent an ethnocentric world view and considers the role of language use in interaction. We look at assessing MICC as a process of giving and receiving feedback rather than as a summative assessment. The data consist of 74 texts on assessments written by university students. The understanding of the contextual and situational nature of MICC was enhanced through a process that the participants considered as ‘lengthy …

Impact of organisational practices and language on an international business cooperation : the case of a German-Slovakian corporation
2015
In the course of the EU integration process, Slovakia became a target of choice for German investors. The percentage of German foreign direct investment has increased sharply since 1995. A growing number of German small to medium sized enterprises discover Slovakia as profitable location for outsourcing and offshoring. However, little is known about German-Slovakian corporations and expatriate management in Slovakia. The aim of the study is to get an understanding of the impact of organisational culture and language on one specific case of a German-Slovakian business cooperation. During the study, the research question is divided into three sub-questions: How is the organisational culture c…
Bridging the Divide : understanding interactions between international and home students in U.S. secondary schools
2016
Huizinga, Rick H. 2016. Bridging the Divide: Understanding interactions between international and home students in U.S. secondary schools. Master's Thesis in Education. University of Jyväskylä. Department of Education. The increasing numbers of international students have been well-documented in universities around the world—particularly in English-speaking nations such as the United States. Less documented, however, is the similar growth of international student numbers in private secondary schools in the United States. Unlike in university international programs, little research has been done on the topic of interactions between home and international students at this educational level. U…

ELF e le varietà linguistiche afro-asiatiche nella Sicilia dei migranti
2015
This study arises from recent research within the context of a new Sicily, where the various ethnic groups inhabiting it have become EFL users who have different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and appropriate the English without necessarily conforming to its grammatical and lexical norms. This phenomenon places Sicily in a complex position with regard to the construction of EFL speakers and English itself becomes the language that is used for everyday conversations and social interactions within and outside the communities in Sicily. Though Sicily is not a British ex-colony, a high number of immigrants living there speaks the so-called New Englishes as a result of British colonization.…
Intercultural Communication and its Challenges Within the International Virtual Project Team
2019
With the advance of technology, face-to-face intercultural communication moves into the online virtual environment via electronic tools such as audio-video conferencing, email, messenger chat, platforms, groups, thus distances between individuals from different cultures are reduced and the exchange of information takes place within a few seconds. Cultural differences should not be a barrier to communication but an opportunity for development. International virtual project teams (IVPTs) can benefit from cultural diversity and effective intercultural communication, because it can enhance creativity and innovation within the project team, while at the same time team members are enriched by acq…
