Abstract. The coupling of Earth system model components, which work on different grids, into an Earth System Model (ESM) provokes the necessity to transfer data from one grid to another. Additionally, each of these model components might require data import onto its specific grid. Usually, one of two approaches is used: Either all input data is preprocessed to the employed grid, or the imported data is interpolated on-line, i.e. during model integration to the required grid. For the former, each change in the model resolution requires the re-preprocessing of all data. The latter option implies that in each model integration computing time is required for the grid mapping. If all components …

HyperShell: An expert system shell in a hypermedia environment—application in medical audiology

1990

HyperShell is an expert system shell developed in a hypermedia environment. Several artificial intelligence techniques such as frames and semantic networks are used in an original interpretation to enhance the interaction between the user and the program. The typical navigation tools of hypermedia such as clickable buttons and text search are extended to the semantic structure of HyperShell, creating a set of new tools. Examples from a medical expert system (Audex HM) developed in HyperShell are described.

VoxelMages: a general-purpose graphical interface for designing geometries and processing DICOM images for PENELOPE

2016

The design and construction of geometries for Monte Carlo calculations is an error-prone, time-consuming, and complex step in simulations describing particle interactions and transport in the field of medical physics. The software VoxelMages has been developed to help the user in this task. It allows to design complex geometries and to process DICOM image files for simulations with the general-purpose Monte Carlo code PENELOPE in an easy and straightforward way. VoxelMages also allows to import DICOM-RT structure contour information as delivered by a treatment planning system. Its main characteristics, usage and performance benchmarking are described in detail.

Domain Expert Platform for Goal-Oriented Dialog Collection

2021

Today, most dialogue systems are fully or partly built using neural network architectures. A crucial prerequisite for the creation of a goal-oriented neural network dialogue system is a dataset that represents typical dialogue scenarios and includes various semantic annotations, e.g. intents, slots and dialogue actions, that are necessary for training a particular neural network architecture. In this demonstration paper, we present an easy to use interface and its back-end which is oriented to domain experts for the collection of goal-oriented dialogue samples. The platform not only allows to collect or write sample dialogues in a structured way, but also provides a means for simple annotat…

Visualization in comparative music research

2007

Computational analysis of large musical corpora provides an approach that overcomes some of the limitations of manual analysis related to small sample sizes and subjectivity. The present paper aims to provide an overview of the computational approach to music research. It discusses the issues of music representation, musical feature extraction, digital music collections, and data mining techniques. Moreover, it provides examples of visualization of large musical collections.

Thermal, electric and spin transport in superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator structures

2019

A ferromagnetic insulator (FI) attached to a conventional superconductor (S) changes drastically the properties of the latter. Specifically, the exchange field at the FI/S interface leads to a splitting of the superconducting density of states. If S is a superconducting film, thinner than the superconducting coherence length, the modification of the density of states occurs over the whole sample. The co-existence of the exchange splitting and superconducting correlations in S/FI structures leads to striking transport phenomena that are of interest for applications in thermoelectricity, superconducting spintronics and radiation sensors. Here we review the most recent progress in understandin…

Transport properties of Nb/PdNi bilayers

2006

The transport properties of superconductor/weak ferromagnet Nb/Pd86Ni14 sputtered bilayers have been studied. The critical thickness needed for superconductivity to develop is determined from the dependence of the transition temperature T-c on d(Nb). (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Critical Micelle Density for the Self-Assembly of Block Copolymer Surfactants in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

1999

The parameters which influence the self-assembly of molecules in solution include the temperature and solvent quality, and this study illustrates the use of these variables to regulate the degree of association of block copolymer amphiphiles in highly compressible supercritical carbon dioxide. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has been used to examine the association behavior of a block copolymer containing a CO2-phobic moiety, poly(vinyl acetate), and a CO2-philic block, poly(1,1-dihydroperfluoro-octylacrylate). By adjustment of the density of the medium through pressure and temperature profiling, the self-assembly can be reversibly controlled from unimers to core−shell spherical micel…

Growth of polycrystalline nickel hydroxide films from aqueous solution. Solution chemistry, deposition methods, film morphology and texture

2014

Abstract Deposition of functional ceramic films on different substrates by using soft aqueous solution processing can represent a cheap, low- energy and environmental friendly alternative to other film technologies. In this study β-Ni(OH)2 polycrystalline films were grown on polytetrafluoroethylene, NiO, glass, copper, and Y:ZrO2 substrates from Ni2 +–NH4OH aqueous solutions. A careful control of solution supersaturation was essential to induce heterogeneous nucleation on the substrate and film growth. This was realized through the gradual decomposition of the nickel amino complexes Ni(NH3)n2 + using two different methods. Thermodynamic modeling of the Ni–NH4OH–H2O system was used to provid…
