Environmental control on granular clinoforms of ancient carbonate shelves

2006

The purpose of this paper is to document the influence of depositional environments on shallow-water, low-relief clinoforms from the description of five ancient carbonate platforms: the Neoproterozoic (Namibia), Middle Jurassic (France), Lower Cretaceous (France), Upper Cretaceous (Oman) and Miocene (Turkey). These examples have been investigated on the basis of field observations. The clinoforms are described with reference to geometric and compositional attributes: declivity, shape, height, sedimentary structures, sediment fabric and components. The results show great variability in stratal geometry, declivity and facies distribution: (1) depositional profiles vary from exponential, to si…

Wii-bändi : designing an expressive digital musical interface for therapeutic use with disabled people in a group setting

2011

This thesis presents the developmental prototype of a gesturally controlled digital musical interface. It is called Wii-bändi, as it uses Nintendo Wii controllers to translate the gestures into music, and is constructed specifically for clients with a variety of physical and mental disabilities so that they can use it in a therapeutic group context. It is argued that gestural and emotional expressivity might be based on a theory of vitality affects, and that optimal learnability could be achieved through making use of learning schemas. It then sets out how the interface was created using a methodological approach based on action research, describing the specific contexts that led to the cha…

Tailoring oxide properties: An impact on adsorption characteristics of molecules and metals

2014

Abstract Both density functional theory calculations and numerous experimental studies demonstrate a variety of unique features in metal supported oxide films and transition metal doped simple oxides, which are markedly different from their unmodified counterparts. This review highlights, from the computational perspective, recent literature on the properties of the above mentioned surfaces and how they adsorb and activate different species, support metal aggregates, and even catalyse reactions. The adsorption of Au atoms and clusters on metal-supported MgO films are reviewed together with the cluster׳s theoretically predicted ability to activate and dissociate O 2 at the Au–MgO(100)/Ag(100…

Pitch tilt rendering for an 8-DOF driving simulator

2015

International audience; Tilt coordination technique is used for reproducing a sustained linear acceleration in driving simulation by tilting the simulator cabin. Thus a part of gravity is interpreted as a horizontal acceleration. Between the slow rotational motion limited by the rotational perception threshold of semi-circular canals of vestibular system and the fast change of acceleration to render, the design of coupling motions of rotation and translation plays a critical role in the realism of driving simulator. We present here an experiment focusing on longitudinal accelerations rendering with pitch tilt coordination technique. Eight drivers experienced the same accelerations and decel…

Dual Information Systems: Supporting Organizational Working and Learning by Making Organizational Memory Transparent

1999

The conceptual design of most computer-based information systems reflects a dualism of technology. During the development phase, part of the work-domain-related knowledge is formalized and encoded in the software, making it difficult for users to reflect on and use this knowledge. This design--use dualism contributes to the deterioration of the interpretive flexibility of information systems. In this article, we outline an information systems architecture called Dual Information Systems (DIS) that incorporates the concepts of an organizational memory information system (OMIS) in a broader framework. DIS help bridge the design--use dualism by providing organizations with a set of services th…

Redesigning Computer-Supported Work Processes with Dual Information Systems: The Work Process Benchmarking Service

1999

The conceptual design of most computer-based information systems reflects a dualism of technology. During the development phase, part of the work-domain-related knowledge is formalized and encoded in the software, making it difficult for users to reflect on and use this knowledge. This design/use dualism contributes to the deterioration of the interpretive flexibility of information systems. We propose an information systems architecture called Dual Information Systems (DIS) that helps bridge the design/use dualism by providing organizations with a set of services that enable and reinforce both effective, institutionalized working and the questioning and (re)construction of computer-support…

Impact of Converter-Interfaced Generation to the Frequency Response of the European Power System

2019

The increase of converter-interfaced generation (CIG) typically related to renewable energy sources is progressively causing a significant change of power systems operation. The curtailment of synchronous generation with the consequent reduction of the overall kinetic energy is one of the related issues, currently under investigation in academia and industry. The work considers the problem of overall inertia reduction from a large-scale point of view, analyzing the impact of different CIG integration levels to the frequency response of the power system of Continental Europe. The kinetic energy is evaluated for each country of the synchronous area, and the system is modified substituting con…

Impact of the high share of converter-interfaced generation on electromechanical oscillations in Continental Europe power system

2020

This study investigates the effects of converter-interfaced generation integration on the dynamic response of the power system of Continental Europe. The system is analysed with a large-scale dynamic model of the entire synchronous area, considering different instantaneous integration percentages of converter-interfaced generation across the system. The study focuses on the reduction of the overall available kinetic energy and the impact on frequency dynamics and system oscillations. The dynamic model of the system originally provided by ENTSO-E is further developed according to a specific methodology, replacing a determined amount of synchronous generation and introducing a corresponding a…

The seven layers of complexity of recommender systems for children in educational contexts

2019

Recommender systems (RS) in their majority focus on an average target user: adults. We argue that for non-traditional populations in specific contexts, the task is not as straightforward–we must look beyond existing recommendation algorithms, premises for interface design, and standard evaluation metrics and frameworks. We explore the complexity of RS in an educational context for which young children are the target audience. The aim of this position paper is to spell out, label, and organize the specific layers of complexity observed in this context.
