Introducing INTERMED International Workshop – Intertidal organisms as a proxy for climate change.
2009
Recensione: Pietro Montani, L'immaginazione intermediale. Perlustrare, rifigurare, testimoniare il mondo visibile, Laterza, Roma-Bari 2010, in Giorna…
2011
Choosing Open Innovation Intermediaries through their web-based platforms
2016
This paper examines the services provided by Open Innovation Intermediaries (OIIs) through their web-based platforms, in order to understand how OIIs can effectively support innovation seekers in their innovation processes. Relying on the existing literature exploring the roles and functions of web-based OII platforms, we carried out an exploratory and comparative qualitative study to identify the services available, to classify them by the various phases of the innovation processes in which they can be beneficial, and to link them to general roles and functions. Our analysis of the services provided by OII platforms sheds light on the dynamics of innovation seekers’ choices, and gives mean…
Who uses intermediaries in international trade? Evidence from firm-level survey data
2011
The present paper uses data from the World Bank Enterprise Survey conducted in Turkey in 2005 to shed light on the firms which use intermediaries in international trade. It lends robust empirical support to recent theories which suggest that indirect exporters are mostly small firms which are not profitable enough to cover the high fixed costs of building their own distribution network abroad. Manufacturers which introduce entirely new products to foreign markets are more likely to use trade intermediaries, as are firms which produce low quality goods. In contrast, neither foreign ownership nor credit constraints are correlated with the choice of export mode. Moreover, firms which rely on t…
Do local proxy advisors matter? – Evidence from Germany
2021
Prior research documents that the large US-based proxy advisors, Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) and Glass Lewis (GL), play an important role as information intermediaries in corporate gov...
Microtubules and intermediate filaments of herpes simplex virus infected cells.
1987
The fate of microtubules and of vimentin or keratin containing intermediate filaments during infection with fusion or rounding producing strains of herpes simplex virus (HSV) was investigated. Microtubules polymerize early after fusion of cells. However, they do not reconstitute 6–7 hours post infection (p.i.) after release of a colcemid block. Keratin and vimentin are maintained around the original nucleus still inside of recruited cells in the polykaryocyte. Cells of fibroblastic and epithelial origin fuse. Inside of polykaryocytes keratin or vimentin containing fibers seem to polymerize. Keratin is to be found in invaginations in the nuclei surrounded by the inner layer of the nuclear me…
Hybridization in Capparis spinosa L.: Molecular and morphological evidence from a Mediterranean island complex
2014
Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) molecular markers and morphological analysis were used in order to characterize wild populations and cultivated forms of orphan crop species Capparis spinosa L. in a Mediterranean island complex. Nineteen wild populations belonging to two different subspecies, C. spinosa subsp. spinosa and subsp. rupestris, were sampled in different environments in Sicily and the surrounding islets Lampedusa, Pantelleria and Salina. Different biotypes cultivated in Pantelleria and Salina were analyzed. Six ISSR primers were selected for genetic characterization, and all clear and reproducible bands were scored and analyzed. Among the 47 ISSR bands obtained, 97.5% were pol…
AnyDSL: a partial evaluation framework for programming high-performance libraries
2023
This paper advocates programming high-performance code using partial evaluation. We present a clean-slate programming system with a simple, annotation-based, online partial evaluator that operates on a CPS-style intermediate representation. Our system exposes code generation for accelerators (vectorization/parallelization for CPUs and GPUs) via compiler-known higher-order functions that can be subjected to partial evaluation. This way, generic implementations can be instantiated with target-specific code at compile time. In our experimental evaluation we present three extensive case studies from image processing, ray tracing, and genome sequence alignment. We demonstrate that using partial …
Latvian Translation Scene at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Century
2020
The paper looks at the Latvian translation scene at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It is a continuation of the study of translation history in Latvia reflected in previous issues of Vertimo studijos (vol. 7, 8, 11). These decades are marked by a huge growth of translation, especially in periodicals. German was gradually losing its dominant position as a source and intermediate language, Russian was advancing, so was also the scope of other languages. In contrast to previous periods there was a particular interest in the quality of the originals and modernity. This period also saw a change of generations among translators, and women became visible in translation sc…
Variations of lipid and apolipoprotein content in lipoproteins during fasting in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.)
1997
Lipoproteins are involved in transport of exogenous and endogenous lipids. For this reason, the lipoprotein pattern undergoes drastic variation during fasting. In D. labrax, observed variations concern, the relative content of the five lipoproteins and their composition, both in lipid and apolipoprotein content. These data indicate the presence of a cascade mechanism of maturation involving very-low-density lipoprotein, (VLDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-1 and LDL-2. In addition, a metabolic correlation involves VLDL and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). VLDL are functionally comparable with mammalian chylomicrons; in fact, they disappear rapidly after feeding from the chromatographic patt…
