Search for intermediate mass black hole binaries in the first and second observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo network

2019

Gravitational wave astronomy has been firmly established with the detection of gravitational waves from the merger of ten stellar mass binary black holes and a neutron star binary. This paper reports on the all-sky search for gravitational waves from intermediate mass black hole binaries in the first and second observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo network. The search uses three independent algorithms: two based on matched filtering of the data with waveform templates of gravitational wave signals from compact binaries, and a third, model-independent algorithm that employs no signal model for the incoming signal. No intermediate mass black hole binary event was detected in this sear…

The life cycle and transmission dynamics of the larval stages ofHypoderaeum conoideum

2000

AbstractThe morphology of the different larval stages and life cycle ofHypoderaeum conoideum(Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) are described. The freshwater snail speciesLymnaea peregra(Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) serves as the natural first intermediate host and this andL. corvusserve as experimental first intermediate hosts. These and other freshwater snails, such asPhysella acutaandGyraulus chinensis, in turn serve as second intermediate hosts. Adult worms were obtained from chicks and ducks, but not from rats, mice and golden hamsters. The morphology of the larval stages is compared with previous work onH. conoideum. Several aspects of the biology of the life history stages are described with em…

The acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus alters the geotactic and clinging behaviours of two sympatric amphipod hosts: the native Gammarus pu…

2005

Acanthocephala are parasites with complex life cycles involving arthropod intermediate hosts and vertebrate final hosts. They use predation as a means of transmission, and some species have developed the ability to modify behaviour of their intermediate hosts to enhance the probability of ingestion by the definitive host. Knowledge of how a single parasite species is adapted to modify the behaviour of different intermediate host species is important for the understanding of parasitic transmission in host communities. In Burgundy, the freshwater amphipod crustaceans Gammarus pulex (native species) and Gammarus roeseli (eastern European invader) are both intermediate hosts for the acanthoceph…

Bioelectronic monitoring of parasite-induced stress in brown trout and roach

1996

A non-contact bioelectronic monitoring system was used to record changes in heart rate, ventilation rate and swimming activity in brown trout Salmo trutta and roach Rutilus rutilus, following exposure to two species of cercariae of digenean trematodes: Diplostomum pseudospathaceum which is a common parasite in the lens of fishes and xiphidiocercariae of Plagiorchis elegans, a parasite of anatid birds, both of which have the snail Lymnaea stagnalis as their first intermediate host. Swimming activity increased significantly in roach exposed to Diplostomum cercariae at densities as low as 3.8l−1 and remained elevated for 24–36 h post exposure. Brown trout showed no response when exposed to low…

Larval trematode infections in freshwater gastropods from the Albufera Natural Park in Spain

1998

AbstractMalacological samplings were made from January 1994 to December 1996 in the Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain) to trace the dynamics of molluscan populations and the prevalence and intensity of infection by larval trematodes. A total of 10,533 freshwater gastropods belonging to seven species (Lymnaea auricularia, L. truncatula, L. palustris, L. peregra, Bithynia tentaculata, Physa acuta and Gyraulus chinensis) was examined, and 110 (1.04%) were found to harbour some of the nine distinguishable types of cercariae, namely four echinostome cercariae (Hypoderaeum conoideum, Echinoparyphium recurvatum, Euparyphium albuferensis, and Echinostoma sp.), four furcocercous cercariae, and …

Chemical composition of the essential oils fromEriocephalus africanus L. var.africanus populations growing in Spain

2007

Essential oils from the aerial parts of three Eriocephalus africanus L. var. africanus populations were analysed by means of GC–FID and GC–MS. Sixty-one constituents were identified, representing more than 96% of the total oil composition. Artemisia ketone (56.46–56.58%), intermedeol (9.19–11.63%) and γ-eudesmol (4.26–5.64%) were the main compounds. Application of the Pearson correlation coefficient showed high similarity between the nine samples analysed. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Antimicrobial efficacy of the supernatant of <i>Streptococcus dentisani</i> against microorganisms implicated in root canal infections

2019

The present study aimed to test the antimicrobial activity of Streptococcus dentisani (S. dentisani) supernatant against a collection of microorganisms implicated in dental root infections, and to analyze morphological changes induced in a selection of the tested microorganisms. A total of 22 microbial species were selected, and their growth was monitored by spectrophotometry in the presence and absence of the supernatant of S. dentisani at different assay concentrations (0.2×, 1×, 2×). The generation time and maximum growth rates were evaluated under every tested condition. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were obtained to assess the effect on the cell surface following incubation…

0393: Impact of miR-378* and its target desmin intermediate filament on mitochondria distribution in cardiomyocytes

2014

Background MiR-378 and miR-378* microRNAs are derived from an intron of the PGC-1β gene, a regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. Their expression is either repressed or increased during heart failure depending on the model. Through proteomics approaches, we previously identified new targets of these miRs in H9c2 fetal cardiomyoblasts, among which lactate dehydrogenase for miR-378 and key cytoskeletal proteins for miR-378*. Aims To better assess its role in energy metabolism and differentiation; we overexpressed miR-378 and miR-378* in primary neonate rat cardiomyocytes (NRC) that are more differentiated and less proliferative than H9c2 cardiomyoblasts. Results We identified desmin as a new…

Exporting Corporate Governance: Do Foreign and Local Proxy Advisors Differ?

2018

Prior research documents that the large US-based proxy advisors, Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) and Glass Lewis (GL), play an important role as information intermediaries in corporate governance worldwide. We provide initial evidence on the role of local proxy advisors, using the German setting. We analyse voting recommendations by local (IVOX) and foreign (ISS, GL) proxy advisors. First, we find that IVOX’s voting recommendations differ substantially from those of ISS and GL. Second, we observe that IVOX’s against-recommendations are significantly negatively associated with voting support. Third, we find that this association is particularly negative for voting outcomes at compan…

An interaction orientation approach to SME-Intermediaries relationships

2021

Abstract Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) engaging in foreign operations have drawn significant research attention in recent years. One of the aspects linked to such operations is SMEs’ expansion to foreign markets, often relying on local intermediaries. These intermediaries provide the firms with valuable resources such as market knowledge and recognition and reduce foreign operations’ costs. Hence, they are often considered as strategic partners. The current study aims to expand the existing knowledge regarding the relationships between business to business SMEs and their intermediaries by exploring interaction orientation as an organizational cultural aspect and its linkage to t…
